MSI Cubi 5 10M-035EU: Small, power-efficient, but kinda expensive

Conclusion

There is an increasing trend to shrink hardware that does not need to be unnecessarily large. A good example of this is the Cubi 5 computer in a case with a volume of only three quarters of a liter. You don’t have to worry about storing it. It will not take much space on the table and I can imagine it hanging on one of the monitors. It performs very well functionally, but the question remains whether it is worthy of its purchase price.

Conclusion

Cubi 5 10M is a nice mini computer. Operating characteristics are balanced very well. The heating is higher than that of the compared Shuttle computer with Celeron, but the Core i5 is, of course, faster. Although single-channel RAM connection can be felt sometimes. When encoding video, the performance of the MSI computer with Ci5-10210U is not much higher than that of the Celeron 4205U in the Shuttle DS10U (with a 128-bit dual-channel bus width). And with QuickSync, it’s even lower. In other cases, the Cubi 5 10M has the significant upper hand. With reasonable graphics settings, you can also play some less demanding games, such as League of Legends or Counter-Strike 1.6. But the purpose of this mini computer is clear: office work, web, movies or some other, specific and relatively undemanding use, such as a kiosk.

I see a big plus in extensive connectivity. On the one hand, you will enjoy the possibility of connecting two monitors at the same time or one with high-resolution UHD at 60 Hz, thanks to DisplayPort. A good bonus is lower noise than many similar computers. I often didn’t even know that the computer was being used. However, the biggest gimmick is the minimalist dimensions, for which you will pay a lot. For the price of Cubi 5 10M, a more powerful computer can be built, but it will, of course, be significantly larger. And if you want a similar little barebone, you will definitely find ones with the same performance where you will save some money, but it is quite possible that they will be noisier and with weaker equipment. However, none of this justifies this configuration being overpriced.

Blackview MP200: Complete (and cheap) miniature PC

The mini PC category is less represented in our country compared to laptops, but occasionally we get a piece from MSI or Gigabyte. When I received an email from Blackview and with it an opportunity to broaden my horizons, I didn’t hesitate and agreed to test their MP200 solution. The compact computer with an 11th generation Core i5 processor got both RAM and an SSD in the package, which is remarkable at a 400-euro price. NUC with 10nm Cannon Lake processors and Radeon GPU

Minicomputers and NUC barebones from Intel is nothing new. But this year, there will be an interesting innovation: a model with dedicated graphics card. Not in the style of high-end Hades Canyon (Kaby Lake-G with Vega GPU) of course. It’s going to be NUC with a cheaper Radeon in some classic chassis, and the price will be lower. This model will probably be one of the first computers with 10nm Intel processors – which may be related. Read more “NUC with 10nm Cannon Lake processors and Radeon GPU” »

    1. The external button is not sold separately, it is part of the accessory. However, all Cubi computers do not support it – they do not have a two-pin connector for it, which is on the side of the case.
