That’s why we’re bringing you measurements that better reflect what’s in use these days. We have the results of the Endorfy Fera 5 cooler on the latest Intel and AMD platforms with their top processor models. How does an, essentially, inexpensive tower cooler handle them?

We have already discussed what results the Endorfy Fera 5 Black achieves compared to other coolers. But that was on the older Intel LGA 1200 platform, where the relative ranking among coolers may not always scale. The ratios on different platforms may vary depending on the specifics of the CPU under test. This was also shown in recent liquid cooler tests, where the Fractal Design Lumen S36 V2 fares better (than on a Core Ultra 9 processor) on an AMD platform (Ryzen 9 9950X). The Endorfy Fera 5 Black cooler may also behave differently depending on the platform. How it is on the most modern ones, with the most powerful processors, will be the subject of the following analysis.

<div heatsink along with the fan typically towards the DIMM slots. That is, assuming the cooler is installed vertically.
** The distance between the shorter sides of the fins of the cooler. The larger it is, the closer the cooler is to the first PCIe ×16 slot in the case of symmetrical heatsinks. Or in a horizontal position, possibly to memory slots already covered by the cooler.

Details of the Endorfy Fera 5 Black cooler

Design-wise, it is a tower cooler with one tower, or with one bundle of fins pressed on heatpipes. There are four of them, with a 6 mm diameter. The cooler is oriented vertically, being 155 mm tall. Thus, it is not a super tall cooler, but it is not very short either. In short, this design strikes a balance, taking into account compatibility (so that the cooler fits into as many cases as possible), but also achieving the highest possible cooling performance, which naturally also depends on the size of the surface area of the fins.

The surface of the fins is lightly moulded to enlarge the fins in order to maximise their surface area. There are small circular protrusions on the fins for this. The long side of the ribs has serrated edges. This is for acoustic reasons, to keep the noise of the air circulating around this heatsink as low as possible. Unlike the standard variant (EY3A005), this one tested (EY3A011) has a completely black heatsink shell. This is due to surface treatment of the otherwise, again, aluminium fins.

The heatpipes are also black, that is outside the part contacting the processor IHS. On it you can already see that they are copper (and black is only the surface finish).

The heatpipes are also characterized by their “direct contact” (with the processor). This means that the heatpipes are milled and ground into a plane. Remarkably, there are no gaps between the heatpipes (some coolers have aluminum fillers) or the typical unevenness or gaps between the heatpipes, which would have to be filled with a larger amount of thermal paste. Such weak spots, where thermal conductivity drops, have been avoided by the manufacturer of the Fera 5 (Black) cooler. Everything gives the impression that every effort has been made to get the most out of the available material to make it as efficient as possible. The inside, of course, can’t be seen and we’re just stating things based on external features.

The heatsink is cooled by a 120-millimeter Endorfy Fluctus 120 PWM fan. We also tested it separately and it’s in the same form on the Fera 5 Black cooler (including the 300–1800 rpm speed range). This mimics a medium-sized computer case with four system fans, two 120mm models being intake fans and the same number being outtake fans. The fans used are Noctua NF-S12A PWM, slowed down to 550 rpm. All of them. This means that the air flow in the tunnel, or in the case, is in equilibrium. Such a configuration has also proven itself in tests aimed at exploring different positions (and settings) of system fans with regard to efficient cooling of a build as a whole.

In AIO liquid cooler tests, only three Noctua NF-S12A PWM fans are installed. Motherboard BIOSes have their power supply limits removed. As such, the temperature limit is determined by the capabilities of the CPU cooler. However, lower temperatures do not automatically mean higher cooling performance. When evaluating, one must take into account at what power consumption they are achieved. If at a lower consumption, it may or may not mean a lower computing performance of the processor. For this reason, something that could be termed “coolable power consumption” is also an important parameter. If this increases towards quieter modes with lower noise levels and naturally with lower cooling performance, then that’s a good sign for the cooler because it can keep the processor performing well. Naturally at higher heat, and higher power consumption here means more waste heat that needs to be dissipated from the processor. Anyway, in case the recorded power consumption would be lower, the cooler already starts to be the limiting factor with its possibilities and the temperature values already become impossible to compare. Or, a lower temperature may not mean a better result, as the CPU performance is lower along with it. So there are more parameters to consider. One of them is the clock speed of the CPU cores – the average clock speed. This concept of testing methodology will be applicable to small, low-profile models with lower cooling performance in addition to high-performance coolers.

The electrical current, from which the power consumption is subsequently calculated, is recorded on the EPS cables with Prova 15 current clamps. The output is the average of the data from the last minute of the 600-second Cinebench R23 test. The temperatures (average of the maximum values of the individual cores) and the average clock speeds of the processor cores are obtained from a log in HWiNFO (v8.16-5600). With traditional bases, the drop technique is applied to the middle of the processor IHS, on bases with DTH thin strips are applied to the shaped heatpipes. How does an, essentially, inexpensive tower cooler handle them?

Conclusion

Among inexpensive models, an excellent cooler for the middle class of modern Intel and AMD processors. By this we mean Core Ultra 5 (Intel), possibly Core i5 or Ryzen 5 9000/7000 (AMD) processors.

Based on our tests with more powerful CPUs, we can say that the CU9 285K without power limits was always beyond the capabilities of the Endorfy Fera 5 (Black) cooler. Even at the maximum speed of its fan, when the highest cooling performance is achieved, the P-core clock speeds were about 400 MHz below what we measured with 360 mm liquid coolers (Navis F360 and Lumen S36 V2). On top of that, this was the case with the cores (CPUs) being heated to over a hundred degrees Celsius, which naturally already hit thermal limits significantly.

We’ve managed to tune the Endorfy Fera 5 Black cooler to the quietest mode, but again – the available cooling performance is for lower-power CPUs. In this particular case, at very quiet operation, that’s less than 125 W for the Intel platform. That means below the TDP level of the “K” models. You probably won’t reach even base clock speeds in such conditions, but for quiet operation of 65-watt models, the Fera 5 Black cooler will be suitable. And there may even be talk of some performance headroom.

From the perspective of AMD processors, the situation is more favorable even at very low speeds, at which, although this cooler will not be able to maintain the maximum performance of the Ryzen 9 9950X, it is not far from being able to do so. At medium speeds, the cooling performance of the Fera 5 (Black) is already just right even for such a powerful processor. Of course it is also true that it is an optimal cooler for lower-end processors on the AMD platform. Although there’s the option of working with the lower-power Ryzen 7s, keep in mind that these processors only have one CPU core chiplet active. In other words, their heat flux can be denser than that of two-chiplet models with higher overall power consumption. In such cases, the heat dissipation requirements are even more stringent.

Although compared to the liquid coolers tested so far, the Fera 5 Black is weaker, it should also be noted that its price is 4–5 times lower. The price to cooling performance ratio of this cooler is really attractive. Nevertheless, the Fera 5 variant with a black heatsink costs extra compared to the “standard” (with a heatsink without the black coating). The latter is cheaper and has an even better price/cooling performance ratio. In any case, the choice of Fera 5 Black will be attractive for those users who also care about the appearance or matching the colour scheme of the entire build. Here, the black design often fits in better than that which is natural for an aluminium heatsink.

In its price range, the Endorfy Fera 5 Black has an extremely high cooling efficiency on today’s processors, for which it deserves the “Smart buy!” editorial award.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

<div id="supsystic-table-3437_14767" class="supsystic-tables-wrap " style=" width:100%;
