Compared to similar and typically cheaper designs with four heatpipes, it can handle significantly higher loads. Their design has long been based on a heatsink with a single, slimmer tower, within which a bundle of fins is intersected by a quartet of heatpipes. The same foundation was used for the Freezer 33, for example, which you may also remember from our early tests. Back then, as it will be today, the Freezer 33 cooler was pitted against the Fera 3 v2 cooler (from SilentiumPC Endorfy). Except we are already on higher-end models, Freezer 36 (A-RGB/White) and Fera 5 (Black).

Unlike the past models, this new one – the Freezer 36 – always has two fans. There is no variant with one (fan). You remove this retention bracket and the one from Arctic comes in its place. However, you must be careful to tighten the bracket evenly and with adequate force when mounting it. If you overtighten it, the motherboard may stop working.

The purpose of the ILM from Arctic is to prevent unwanted flexing of the motherboard in places that could have a negative effect on the cooler’s contact with the processor. Additionally, Arctic’s ILM has mounting holes on the sides that are optimized for the pre-installed clip of the Freezer 36 cooler. Not only because of the presence of one extra fan (two instead of one), but also because of the weight difference of the heatsinks. The latter is approximately 145 grams. The fins of the Freezer 36 are not only a bit wider, but more importantly, they are thicker (about 0.48 mm), by about 37%. Of course, some thickness is also created by the white coating that is applied to the otherwise aluminum fins. To be fair, these comparisons are based on the situation on the Endorfy Fera Black, which also has a coating. The Freezer 36 has three extra fins (59+1 on the top, decorative) and is 4mm taller. This possibly indicates worse compatibility with cases, but the latter is still fine, as the cooler (Freezer 36) is 159 mm tall, and the vast majority of tower cases allow for such dimensions.

And one more thing – fan mounting. It’s very atypical, but clever. It doesn’t use the traditional steel clips snapping onto fins, but a push-pin system. That is, there are screw heads sticking out of the mounting holes of the fans, which snap into the counter-pieces pre-installed between the fins of the heatsink.

The mounting system for the fans is fairly original, but still such that you can buy standard fans in case of failure and screw the mounts into them. It will be worse if by some accident the plastic sleeve between the fins of the heatsink cracks and the fan doesn’t hold well in that location. You can’t just buy this sleeve separately, but you can always send the cooler back for a warranty claim.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Even with two fans, this cooler is a very good option. Compared to similar and typically cheaper designs with four heatpipes, it can handle significantly higher loads. There is also a certain benefit to these things around cooling performance in mounting via a custom retention bracket (ILM) around the processor socket.

Testing methodology

Performance tests of CPU coolers are performed in our wind tunnel. This mimics a medium-sized computer case with four system fans, two 120mm models being intake fans and the same number being outtake fans. The fans used are Noctua NF-S12A PWM, slowed down to 550 rpm. All of them. This means that the air flow in the tunnel, or in the case, is in equilibrium. Such a configuration has also proven itself in tests aimed at exploring different positions (and settings) of system fans with regard to efficient cooling of a build as a whole.

In AIO liquid cooler tests, only three Noctua NF-S12A PWM fans are installed. Motherboard BIOSes have their power supply limits removed. As such, the temperature limit is determined by the capabilities of the CPU cooler. However, lower temperatures do not automatically mean higher cooling performance. When evaluating, one must take into account at what power consumption they are achieved. If at a lower consumption, it may or may not mean a lower computing performance of the processor. For this reason, something that could be termed “coolable power consumption” is also an important parameter. If this increases towards quieter modes with lower noise levels and naturally with lower cooling performance, then that’s a good sign for the cooler because it can keep the processor performing well. Naturally at higher heat, and higher power consumption here means more waste heat that needs to be dissipated from the processor. Anyway, in case the recorded power consumption would be lower, the cooler already starts to be the limiting factor with its possibilities and the temperature values already become impossible to compare. Or, a lower temperature may not mean a better result, as the CPU performance is lower along with it. So there are more parameters to consider. One of them is the clock speed of the CPU cores – the average clock speed. This concept of testing methodology will be applicable to small, low-profile models with lower cooling performance in addition to high-performance coolers.

The electrical current, from which the power consumption is subsequently calculated, is recorded on the EPS cables with Prova 15 current clamps. The output is the average of the data from the last minute of the 600-second Cinebench R23 test. The temperatures (average of the maximum values of the individual cores) and the average clock speeds of the processor cores are obtained from a log in HWiNFO (v8.16-5600). How does this application work? Find out from our interview with its author.

Also important to get a complete picture are the VRM temperatures, which give you an idea of how well each cooler can cool critical components around the socket.

We use the thermal paste that comes with the coolers. Whether it is a pre-applied layer on the coldplate or we have to apply it from the tube. With traditional bases, the drop technique is applied to the middle of the processor IHS, on bases with DTH thin strips are applied to the shaped heatpipes. The amount of thermal paste is always approximately 0.066 ml. We chose to do this based on our knowledge from the thematic tests Spreading a thermal paste: how and how much? With coolers with pre-applied single-use thermal paste (no replacement thermal paste in accessories), we use the Thermal Hero Quantum thermal paste on the second test platform (which is always AMD AM5 and measurements on Ryzen 9 9950X).

For completeness: the test setup is powered by a BeQuiet! Dark Power Pro 12 (1200 W), the memory is G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo (2×16 GB, 6000 MHz/CL30) and finally, the SSD is a Patriot Viper VP4100 (1 TB).

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Even with two fans, this cooler is a very good option. This means that it is possible to operate even at the lower fan speed limit while still keeping the temperature low enough, with a margin for warmer days.

It is probably appropriate to state that it is optimal for use with AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core Ultra 5 processors. That is, if you expect not only lower temperatures, but also extra-quiet operation. If you don’t care too much about noise, then Freezer 36 (A-RGB/White) can also be paired with more powerful Ryzen 7 or Core Ultra 7 processors. And, of course, also with Ryzen 9 or Core Ultra 9. How much that would cost we probably won’t find out, but in any case, its relatively higher price, even though it is still a “cheap” cooler, is due to the two fans in the standard configuration. Nevertheless, we can state an excellent ratio of cooling efficiency to the price.

Assuming that you need to buy the mounting kit for older platforms (Intel LGA 1200 or Intel LGA 115x) it will be worse with the price/performance ratio, but users of newer processors from Intel LGA 1700 (incl.) upwards and AMD AM4 (incl.) upwards, have nothing to complain about – The Arctic Freezer 36 A-RGB (White) is a really attractive option, which earns it the “Smart buy!”
