Compared to the lower-end series (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/endorfy-fera-5-black-cooler-tests-on-am5-and-lga-1851-review\/\">Fera 5<\/a>), it has two more heatpipes which increase the cooling performance of this cooler. In practice, however, it only does better in some cases. When the processor can benefit from the &#8220;extra material&#8221; available in the Fortis 5 cooler. How so? We&#8217;ll break everything down in this detailed analysis.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Endorfy Fortis 5 Black coolers, introduced at CES 25, made their way to our editorial office for a proper review. Basically, it&#8217;s a different version of the older <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/silentiumpc-fortis-5-feras-bigger-and-quieter-brother-on-steroids\/\">Fortis 5 without the black finish<\/a>. From the official parameters, we also know, for example, that just like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/endorfy-fera-5-black-cooler-tests-on-am5-and-lga-1851-review\/\">Fera 5 (Black)<\/a> model, the Fortis 5 (Black) has a <a href=\"https:\/\/endorfy.com\/en\/product\/fortis-5-black\/\">TDP of 220 W<\/a>. However, this is at a lower noise level. The cooling efficiency, or cooling performance per unit of noise, should thus be higher. This makes sense given the more robust design (larger fan and larger heatsink).<\/p>\n<div class=\"supsystic-table-loader spinner\"><\/div><div id=\"supsystic-table-3511_3553\" That is, assuming the cooler is installed vertically.<br \/>\n** The distance between the shorter sides of the fins of the cooler. The larger it is, the closer the cooler is to the first PCIe \u00d716 slot in the case of symmetrical heatsinks. Or in a horizontal position, possibly to memory slots already covered by the cooler. <\/strong><\/h6>\n<h2>Details of the Endorfy Fortis 5 Black cooler<\/h2>\n<p>The design is composed of a single tower, whose aluminium fins are intersected by six heatpipes. The total weight of the cooler (including the fan) is approximately 760 grams, and the heatsink itself is about 190 grams heavier compared to the Fera 5&#8217;s heatsink. Compared to the heatsink of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/for-the-price-performance-arctic-freezer-36-a-rgb-white-review\/\">Freezer 36 (A-RGB White)<\/a>, the difference is only about 40 grams, giving the Fortis 5 the upper hand.<\/p>\n<p>From the above numbers we can assume that the weight of the Fortis 5 fins will be comparable to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/for-the-price-performance-arctic-freezer-36-a-rgb-white-review\/\">Freezer 36<\/a>, although we don&#8217;t know what part of the total weight is made up of the two extra heapipes that the Endorfy (Fortis 5 Black) cooler has. The Fortis 5 Black also has the same height (159 mm) as the aforementioned Arctic cooler, although, naturally, the surface area of its fins is utilized in a different way. By having more heatpipes, so possibly better, but this may not always be the case. It also depends on the particular processor the cooler is handling. We&#8217;ll get to that in more detail at the end of the article, during the evaluation. Completely so on the side of the fan, partially so on the opposite side (where you can possibly add a second, expanding fan). The serrations are on the sides where the highest pressure is immediately next to the fan, the center is straight, but with the edges of the fins more recessed into the body of the heatsink. The serrations can be considered primarily as an acoustic enhancement element. This primarily acts as a mechanical reinforcement (of the base) and offset from the heatpipe, which is needed for mounting purposes. Specifically, for the clamp screws to reach the threads in the holders of the mounting bracket, which is already around the processor socket on the motherboard. I guess it could be attributed a cooling function (some heat does reach it after all), but it will be minimal. This means that the thermal bridge does not have a spacer in the form of a traditional block, but the shaped heatpipes make direct contact with the processor&#8217;s IHS. Such a design is often presented in marketing materials as &#8220;more efficient&#8221; because there is no intermediate layer to slow down the heat transfer. On the other hand, with larger DTH bases, not all heatpipes may be in optimal contact with smaller processors, and typically the efficiency of the outermost ones decreases. This is also the case with the Fortis 5 Black in the context of AMD processors, which have smaller heat spreaders than Intel LGA 1851 platform processors (or eventually LGA 1700 \u2013 same situation, same size IHS area). In such cases the heat exchange between the first and last heatpipe is weaker, because they are already off the axis of the processor itself, and although they will not be completely useless in the cooling process, their impact is smaller than that of the remaining heatpipes. This is true even in the case of modules with larger heatsinks. In fact, the fan of the cooler doesn&#8217;t interfere above DIMM slots, also thanks to the base being rotated a bit. Compared to the lower-end series (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/endorfy-fera-5-black-cooler-tests-on-am5-and-lga-1851-review\/\">Fera 5<\/a>), it has two more heatpipes which increase the cooling performance of this cooler. In practice, however, it only does better in some cases. When the processor can benefit from the &#8220;extra material&#8221; available in the Fortis 5 cooler. How so? We&#8217;ll break everything down in this detailed analysis.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Testing methodology<\/h2>\n<p>Performance tests of CPU coolers are performed in our wind tunnel. This mimics a medium-sized computer case with four system fans, two 120mm models being intake fans and the same number being outtake fans. The fans used are <a href=\"https:\/\/noctua.at\/en\/products\/fan\/nf-s12a-pwm\">Noctua NF-S12A PWM<\/a>, slowed down to 550 rpm. All of them. This means that the air flow in the tunnel, or in the case, is in equilibrium. Such a configuration has also proven itself in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/system-cooling-in-the-spotlight-what-to-increase-and-what-to-decrease\/\">tests aimed at exploring different positions (and settings) of system fans<\/a> with regard to efficient cooling of a build as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>In AIO liquid cooler tests, only three Noctua NF-S12A PWM fans are installed. In addition to a maximum noise level, then at 45, 42, 39, 36, 33 and 31 dBA. So we progress from higher noise levels to very low noise levels. The individual modes are carefully controlled by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/fans_methodology_25.jpg\">Gophert CPS-3205 II<\/a> laboratory power supply, whose potentiometer is turned until the target noise level is reached on average (30 samples).<\/p>\n<p>The relative distance between a cooler, which is the only source of noise for the purpose of normalising the settings, and the noise meter sensor is between 20\u201340 cm. With liquid coolers, the distance is greater. As long radiators extend more into the space, they are typically positioned higher in the case, or there is some distance between the pump and the fans on the radiator. The fan noise is always measured from the side, but from a relatively short distance, which blurs the differences between side and frontal sensing in terms of differences in noise due only to different sensing angles. In addition to increasing sensitivity, this suppresses interfering noise that would enter the recording from the background. Unwanted sound reflections are eliminated by acoustic panels. Actually, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/graphics_cards_methodology_08.jpg\">the same test scheme as was used in our graphics card tests<\/a>. The only thing different is the inclination of the noise meter, or microphone. The one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/fans_methodology_16.jpg\">(microphone) we use is the UMIK-1 miniDSP<\/a>. But this is solely for the purpose of creating sound spectrograms illustrating the acoustic response of individual coolers. Motherboard BIOSes have their power supply limits removed. As such, the temperature limit is determined by the capabilities of the CPU cooler. However, lower temperatures do not automatically mean higher cooling performance. When evaluating, one must take into account at what power consumption they are achieved. If at a lower consumption, it may or may not mean a lower computing performance of the processor. For this reason, something that could be termed &#8220;coolable power consumption&#8221; is also an important parameter. If this increases towards quieter modes with lower noise levels and naturally with lower cooling performance, then that&#8217;s a good sign for the cooler because it can keep the processor performing well. Naturally at higher heat, and higher power consumption here means more waste heat that needs to be dissipated from the processor. Anyway, in case the recorded power consumption would be lower, the cooler already starts to be the limiting factor with its possibilities and the temperature values already become impossible to compare. Or, a lower temperature may not mean a better result, as the CPU performance is lower along with it. So there are more parameters to consider. One of them is the clock speed of the CPU cores \u2013 the average clock speed. This concept of testing methodology will be applicable to small, low-profile models with lower cooling performance in addition to high-performance coolers.<\/p>\n<p>The electrical current, from which the power consumption is subsequently calculated, is recorded on the EPS cables with Prova 15 current clamps. The output is the average of the data from the last minute of the 600-second Cinebench R23 test. The temperatures (average of the maximum values of the individual cores) and the average clock speeds of the processor cores are obtained from a log in HWiNFO (v8.16-5600). Whether it is a pre-applied layer on the coldplate or we have to apply it from the tube. With traditional bases, the drop technique is applied to the middle of the processor IHS, on bases with DTH thin strips are applied to the shaped heatpipes. The amount of thermal paste is always approximately 0.066 ml.
