It is primarily aimed at 4K gaming, but with 16 GB of memory, it is also well-suited for applications and AI model processing.

A detailed breakdown of the new technologies introduced with these GPUs and their architecture has been written by Jan Olšan in the article Blackwell: GeForce RTX 5000 architecture and innovations. This article covers the individual chips used in Nvidia’s latest graphics cards, the introduction of DDR7 memory, cache improvements, updates to GPU compute units, changes to shaders, tensor core optimizations, and improved ray tracing units. The new cards also feature support for DisplayPort 2.1b and PCIe 5.0.
With the new generation of cards, the capabilities of DLSS are also advancing, which can now use Multi Frame Generation to generate up to three intermediate frames, and new is also the second generation of Nvidia Reflex with Frame Warp technology, which can adjust the movement of objects and the camera in rendered frames based on the most recent information from peripherals, which it receives only during or after the frame is rendered. Everything is described in more detail in the mentioned article.

At first glance, the card may not seem that large–until you notice the dual-slot bracket shrinking at the front. However, this premium package comes at a significant price.

Test build

Reviewers usually test the performance, thermals, and noise of graphics cards on open-air test benches. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. It’s possible that in such cases, the GPU wasn’t fully loaded. While you can’t directly see this from the GPU Load values on RTX 50 series cards, it becomes apparent from the power consumption.

Below is an example with three different settings. The first one is the most demanding from the previous chapters, while the other graphs represent less demanding settings where the CPU started to bottleneck the card. As you can see, GPU Load stays high, which might make it seem like the card is under strain, but from the power consumption graph, it’s clear that’s not the case. With lower power consumption, temperatures drop as well, and so do the fan speeds. Even in quiet mode, you can reach a state when the card becomes quieter, but again, the chip is clearly not fully loaded in such situations, even if it might appear so based on monitoring.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

With the new generation of GeForce GPUs, Asus is introducing the new ROG Astral series. It doesn’t just come with three but a total of four fans. However, this premium package comes at a significant price.

Closing summary

The Asus ROG RTX 5080 Astral is the new top-of-the-line model from Asus. This is matched by the card’s top-notch features, its design, the cooler with extreme dimensions and also the price. It offers a whole lot of features that you won’t find on cheaper cards.

However, the premium feel is somewhat compromised by the fan curve, which pushes the fans to higher speeds under heavy GPU load, leading to noise levels comparable to or even higher than the RTX 5080 Founders Edition, despite the latter’s much smaller cooler. Opinions on the noise levels in quiet mode vary across tests. In some cases, the fans stay below 1000 RPM, but in my case, the RPMs went significantly higher. Several factors could influence this, such as whether the card was tested in an open space or inside a closed case, as well as how heavily the GPU is being utilized. This is explored in more detail in the previous chapter.

The inclusion of a fourth fan seems like a questionable decision. While it does increase air pressure and improves airflow through the dense fin structure, having two fans stacked on top of each other creates interference between them. This results in not only higher noise because of high fan speeds but also an unpleasant fluctuation in the noise levels, further affecting the overall acoustics of the cooler.

The cooler has plenty of headroom to fiddle with the control settings and reduce the noise level to keep the card quiet, so yes – if you play around with the control you’ll definitely get better operating characteristics than with models with a smaller cooler. But one should expect that for a card with a suggested price of 1,499 USD, a 500 USD premium over the Founders Edition model, you’ll get such a setting from the factory.
