It’s neither the cheapest nor the most expensive model. In a standard setup, the lighting is subtle, but the backlit fans stand out more when mounted vertically. The real advantage, though, is its oversized cooler and well-tuned fan control, allowing it to outperform even pricier competitors in terms of overall performance.

A detailed breakdown of the new technologies introduced with these GPUs and their architecture has been written by Jan Olšan in the article Blackwell: GeForce RTX 5000 architecture and innovations. This article covers the individual chips used in Nvidia’s latest graphics cards, the introduction of GDDR7 memory, cache improvements, updates to GPU compute units, changes to shaders, tensor core optimizations, and improved ray tracing units. The new cards also feature support for DisplayPort 2.1b and PCI Express 5.0.

With the new generation of cards, the capabilities of DLSS are also advancing, which can now use Multi Frame Generation to generate up to three intermediate frames, and new is also the second generation of Nvidia Reflex with Frame Warp technology, which can adjust the movement of objects and the camera in rendered frames based on the most recent information from peripherals, which it receives only during or after the frame is rendered. Everything is described in more detail in the mentioned article.

We’ve already discussed the reference specifications, so I’ll just summarize them in a table and move on to the card itself, which benefits from factory overclocking and slightly higher clock speeds.

<div id="supsystic-table-3477_8346" GeForce RTX 5080 we will test is a factory-overclocked model from Gigabyte’s Gaming series. Compared to the ROG Astral RTX 5080 OC Edition, which we reviewed previously, the RTX 5080 Gaming OC offers a lower price, more standard dimensions, a slightly sleeker design, and slightly lower performance. It sits roughly in the middle of Gigabyte’s lineup, between the more affordable Windforce series and the high-end Aorus Master and Aorus Xtreme models.

The listed factory boost clock speed for the chip has been increased from the reference 2617 MHz to 2730 MHz. However, as is often the case, real-world results tend to be slightly better. The actual operating clock speeds are dynamically regulated based on the card’s workload, power consumption, and chip temperatures. Detailed graphs illustrating these clock speed trends can be found in the performance testing sections.

The new version of GPU-Z 2.62.0 is now available for download on TechPowerUp and is fully compatible with the GeForce RTX 50 series. The screenshots show the Quiet BIOS, which has a power limit set at 360 W, with the option to increase it to 400 W. The Performance BIOS, on the other hand, has a fixed upper limit of 400 W, which cannot be increased further. Additionally, the two BIOS modes differ in their fan speed curve settings–Performance mode runs at higher fan speeds. However, this information cannot be directly read from GPU-Z.

The second BIOS is Performance. It’s not among the cheapest models, but it’s far from the most expensive. In a standard position, the lighting is rather subtle, the backlit fans stand out more in a vertical setup. The real advantage, though, is the oversized cooler and well-tuned fan control, allowing this card to surpass even more expensive competitors in terms of operating characteristics.

Test build

Reviewers usually test the performance, thermals, and noise of graphics cards on open-air test benches. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. Compared to the 1199 EUR MSRP for base models, this is quite a markup. But it’s not realistic to expect to find an RTX 5080 at 1199 EUR, especially given the extreme demand and current very poor availability. If you’re looking for something cheaper, Gigabyte also offers Windforce models with smaller coolers.

I could complain about how the performance increase over the RTX 4080 Super doesn’t justify the price increase. How, in fact, it’s an unattractive new product and the progress is hardly worth mentioning.

It’s hard to feel joy about current prices, but you also won’t get the older RTX 4080 Super at a reasonable price anymore, so if you want an RTX 5080, you basically have two options: pre-order cards at market prices with a surcharge and wait, or wait until the situation stabilizes a bit and prices drop.

But given the abnormal situation in the market, I don’t think it’s worth discussing prices and price/performance ratios in depth right now. In a few months, the situation will be different, and you can adjust according to how prices evolve. What will always hold true, however, are the card’s features. At least with the current revision. Those really impressed me, especially considering it’s a model falling somewhere in the middle of the lineup. Temperatures are still good, the fan control in Quiet mode is optimal, and in this regard, I can’t complain, Gigabyte definitely deserves praise.

In the default performance BIOS, the fan control of the GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming OC is a sort of compromise. Even so, it will be one of the quieter models and offer better operating characteristics than the compact Founders Edition. With more intense cooling and lower temperatures, it might even last a few more months. However, this won’t be ideal for enthusiasts who prefer silent PCs straight from the store.

With the quiet BIOS, it will likely outperform most cards on the market in terms of noise. But it’s almost certain that if you want the absolute quietest card, you would probably choose differently. This might cost you a couple of hundreds more, though. It is nice to see the quieter power supply coils. While they are not absolutely silent, they are quieter than the RTX 5080s I have tested so far. This is generally the case with Gigabyte cards. I can’t rule out that the manufacturer might be sending better-performing samples for testing, but in the case of Gigabyte, I’ve had similar experiences with actual units from stores.

A small rarity is the option to increase the power limit to 450 W, which, combined with the cooler that has enormous reserves in both the fans and the heatsink’s cooling capacity, gives you a huge amount of space for further tuning.

The only downside is the significant price premium compared to the cheapest models. Even the basic RTX 5080 isn’t exactly cheap, and you can’t expect the price of the RTX 5080 Gaming OC to drop by a hundred EUR within a few weeks. A larger cooler simply costs you a bit more. But again, there are even more expensive models above this one, which don’t offer much more added value but will be considerably pricier.

In this regard, it’s a golden middle way—you won’t pay extreme amounts like with the top-tier RTX 5080 models, yet you get equipment and operating characteristics that are close to those of the most expensive models. In fact, some of those premium cards, which push clock speeds and power limits to the extreme, are even surpassed by this card’s operating characteristics in their default settings.

Therefore, the Gigabyte RTX 5080 Gaming OC should definitely be among the models you consider in your narrower selection when buying an RTX 5080.

Pros and cons

+ Excellent operating characteristics
+ Quieter in quiet mode than most mainstream cards and available RTX 5080s
+ The cooler has plenty of headroom
+ Power limit can be increased up to 450W
+ Plenty of room for further experimentation with clock speeds
+ Coils quieter than in most RTX 5080s
+ Dual BIOS
+ Included kit for mounting the card in the back as well

– With a length of over 34 cm, it will interfere with the front fans in some smaller cases
– Significant premium over base models and worse price/performance ratio
– Significantly noisier in Performance mode with an imperceptible difference in performance
– The cooler shroud of a large and heavy card could be more robust
– Thermal gel instead of pads makes it difficult to disassemble the card

Information about the current offers of the GeForce RTX 5080, their prices in both EUR and CZK and their availability can be found in the Datacomp e-store.

⠀
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

At first glance, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming OC isn’t striking in terms of flashy design or vibrant lighting.
