We’re looking at one of the best-equipped versions—the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16G Vanguard SOC, a top-tier model from MSI. It features an extremely powerful cooler with massive headroom and excellent performance but comes at a price comparable to the RTX 4080 Super from the previous generation.

GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is built on the same foundation as the more powerful RTX 5080. Its GB203 graphics chip has been slightly cut down, but importantly, it retains the 256-bit bus and 16 GB of memory, similar to the RTX 4070 Ti Super.

Compared to the higher-end RTX 5080, which features a fully enabled graphics chip, some compute units in the RTX 5070 Ti have been deactivated. As a result, it offers 8,960 shaders, 280 texture units, and 96 ROPs. Additionally, it includes 280 tensor cores for AI computations and 70 cores for ray tracing. The base clock speed is 2,300 MHz, with a boost of up to 2,452 MHz, while the DDR7 memory runs at 1,750 MHz (28 Gb/s).

The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16G VANGUARD SOC is the highest-clocked RTX 5070 Ti model in MSI’s lineup. Among all versions, it has the largest and heaviest cooler, and in the Launch Edition—meant to better promote MSI’s new Vanguard series—it also comes with the most extensive set of accessories.

The card features a dual BIOS with two modes—Silent and Gaming. The difference lies in fan control and behavior, while all other parameters and settings remain identical.

The listed boost clock speed is increased on both BIOS modes from the reference 2,452 MHz to 2,588 MHz, but the actual operating clock speeds under gaming load are even higher. The performance difference between the two BIOS modes is nearly negligible, so I recommend switching to the Silent mode, which we will also use for testing. However, we will measure operating characteristics in detail in both modes.

The power limit is set to a reference 300 W, but you can increase it by 17% to 350 W. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. The minimum power level that can be set in the control software is 30%, at which they spin at 1000 rpm, with a measured noise level just above 30 dBA. They become noticeably audible somewhere between 1400 and 1500 rpm. In silent mode, they typically operate around 1200–1250 rpm, with a measured noise level of about 33–33.5 dBA, which is an absolutely luxurious value. It’s likely that you won’t hear the card over the other fans in the case, and at this noise level, the power delivery coils might be more annoying than the fans themselves.

With the Vanguard, the coil whine is average and no different from what is common for cards with similar power consumption and performance, so they can be heard normally over the background of the fans. Average means you might also encounter cards that buzz more piercingly.

In performance mode, the fans are clearly audible at speeds around 1540 rpm and 38.8 dBA, but they are still noticeably quieter than most budget models, which typically operate at noise levels of 40–44 dBA.

The fans can be spun up to 3200 rpm, so purely in terms of thermal performance, the cooler still has a huge reserve, giving you plenty of room to experiment with performance tuning. However, it’s unlikely many would be willing to endure 60 dBA during normal operation.

The first set of measurements comes from the Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition benchmark with RT Medium settings at a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. It features an extremely powerful cooler with massive headroom and excellent performance but comes at a price comparable to the RTX 4080 Super from the previous generation.

Closing summary

Purely from the perspective of generational improvement and the suggested price of 750 USD, the RTX 5070 Ti, offering performance in many ways similar to the RTX 4080 and the 999-dollar RTX 4080 Super, represents an interesting shift both in terms of performance gains and improvements in price-to-performance ratio

In our neck of the woods, the suggested price for base models of the RTX 5070 Ti starts at 22,399 CZK (roughly 940 USD). However, the market situation is what it is—older models are sold out, and card availability is poor because demand significantly exceeds current supply. As a result, neither manufacturers nor retailers are willing to offer them at similar prices. This means that in stores, you’ll mostly find cards priced closer to the older RTX 4080 Super, and even at those prices, they can’t be purchased immediately.

With performance similar to the RTX 4080 and a price similar to the RTX 4080, the shift becomes unremarkable, and it’s fair to say that the arrival of new cards has practically left the market situation unchanged in this segment. The only significant added value is the support for new technologies introduced with the Blackwell architecture.

I could complain about the current prices and how things look good on paper but that doesn’t translate to real-world progress with the new generation of cards. Nothing will change until the initial hype dies down and supply improves. Prices won’t get better—if anything, they’ll get worse.

A small hope for improving the availability of more powerful cards for those in a hurry is the upcoming Radeon RX 9070 XT, which is expected to target a similar performance segment at lower prices and should hit the market in a few weeks. Only time will tell if the initial wave of interest subsides and supply improves, which should bring prices down to where they should be. There’s not much more we can do, so let’s focus on the MSI card itself.

In terms of the card’s design and operating characteristics, there’s nothing to complain about with the RTX 5070 Ti Vanguard SOC. Like practically all competing cards and models, my biggest gripe with similar cooling performance is that when you have a quiet cooler, the coil whine becomes noticeable. Otherwise, it’s a properly premium model—offering well-tuned fan control, top-tier operating characteristics, and plenty of room for further overclocking or quieter cooling settings.

I certainly don’t want to criticize MSI for the enormous size of the cooler—on the contrary, the larger the heatsink on the card, the better, as it directly impacts the card’s operating characteristics. However, you need to keep this in mind when choosing a case, as cards around 35 cm or longer won’t fit in many otherwise high-quality, shorter cases.

Perhaps the most significant factor that might deter potential buyers is the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Czech market is 27,499 CZK (1,150 USD). The premium for top-tier features and operational performance is significantly higher than the performance gain from factory overclocking. Purely from a price-to-performance perspective, which many people prioritize, the Vanguard fares worse than cards from lower model ranges that are cheaper.

For many customers, it will likely be more acceptable to opt for a model that is a few dBA louder, has chip temperatures 5 °C higher, but saves them a couple hundred bucks at purchase. MSI, after all, offers such models in its lineup, so whether the Vanguard is worth the extra money is up to you. From us, it earns the Top-notch award for its excellent operational performance, as the only significant issue with the RTX 5070 Ti Vanguard is its price.

Pros and cons

+ Extremely powerful cooler
+ Solid performance increase over RTX 4070 Ti and 4070 Ti Super
+ 16 GB of memory is retained, just like with the RTX 5080
+ Headroom for overclocking, cooling, and power limits
+ Dual BIOS
+ Extra card features and included accessories

– Significant premium over basic models
– Priced similarly to RTX 4080 Super
– Performance is on par with the RTX 4080, mainly adding support for new technologies
– Price/performance ratio
– At 36 cm long, it may not fit in more compact cases

Information about the current offers of RTX 5070 Ti, their prices in both EUR and CZK and their availability can be found in the Datacomp e-store.

⠀
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

The new GeForce RTX 5070 Ti goes on sale as the most affordable GeForce model with the Blackwell architecture to date.
