In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. Performance differences reach up to 15% compared to the $600 RX 9070 XT, depending on the test and settings, so the weaker model has a worse price-to-performance ratio.

A side effect of the small price difference, which also affects the Pure RX 9070, is that manufacturers have little room for pricing flexibility.

With the Pure RX 9070, this is compounded by the fact that for an extra 30 USD you should be able to get the higher performance RXj 9070 XT Pulse with the same cooler. Only the power consumption and performance are higher. Although the Pure AMD Radeon RX 9070 is only twenty dollars more expensive against the MSRP, it is not a bargain next to the more powerful, only slightly more expensive and virtually equally equipped Pulse AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT. Unless you’re suffering from melanophobia, or insist on an all-white PC build, it doesn’t make much sense to save $30 by opting for a model with a cut-down chip.

But this is more of a theoretical discussion. Given the current hunger for graphics cards, it’s likely that the more advantageous Pulse won’t be available, and you’ll be grateful even for the Pure RX 9070, even if retailers add a few thousand to the MSRP. Today, it appeared in stores, and it wasn’t a pleasant sight—instead of the suggested 569 USD, it cost over 775 USD.

If we set aside prices and performance, which are similar across different RX 9070 models, and focus purely on operating characteristics of Pure AMD Radeon RX 9070 from Sapphire, we can only conclude that it would be great if all budget graphics card models performed like this.

The same cooler performed excellently on the 304W Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7090 XT, so on the 245W model, it can only be better. Lower temperatures, lower fan speeds, even lower noise levels—from an operational standpoint, this is an excellent card that will likely outperform many competitors even at higher price points.

Pros and cons

+ Price/performance ratio against the GeForce RTX 5070
+ The cooler has plenty of headroom and remains quiet under load
+ 16 GB of memory compared to 12 GB on the RTX 5070
+ Factory overclocking
+ Accessories include a mounting kit for securing the card
+ Significant performance boost in ray tracing compared to the previous generation
+ Ray tracing performance compared to the RX 7900

– Less favorable compared to the Pulse RX 9070 XT at 599 USD
– Competing DLSS is better in terms of supported titles and technology compared to FSR
– Average coil whine noise levels

AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards can be purchased at the Datacomp e-store.

⠀

⠀
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

AMD set the price of the more affordable Radeon RX 9070 as a direct competitor to GeForce RTX 5070.
