In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. The minimum performance that can be set in the fan control is 20%, at which they run at around 850 RPM, and the measured noise level is below 30 dBA. They start to become audible somewhere around 1600–1700 RPM.

Even in silent mode, after prolonged load, they exceed 1800 RPM, where the measured noise level of the card is around 39.7 dBA. The reason is mainly the higher hotspot temperatures of both the GPU and memory, which force the regulation to push the fans to higher speeds. The card can no longer be called quiet, but the noise level still doesn’t bother much.

In Performance mode, the temperatures are lower, but this comes at the cost of higher fan speeds, which reach around 2000 RPM. This corresponds to a noise level of 42 dBA, at which point the noise can be considered average. You’ll encounter similar values with base models across the entire lineup.

Cyberpunk 2077, RT Medium, 3840 × 2160, BIOS Performance

The first set of measurements comes from the Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark with RT Medium settings at a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. The Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G is the more affordable of Gigabyte’s two RX 9070 XT models. While it doesn’t match premium variants in overall performance, it offers more capable power delivery, a higher power limit for factory overclocking, and greater overclocking headroom than base models.

Closing summary

As always, we start with the fact that the availability of new cards is tragic. The MSRP of the RX 9700 XT Gaming OC 16GB is roughly 900 USD, which is quite a bit more than AMD’s MSRP for base models. And yet, in some stores, the Gigabyte card is another hundred bucks more expensive.

Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC falls into the cheaper model range, and its features reflect that. It’s more compact and has a smaller cooler than the premium AORUS model, but due to factory overclocking, the power limit is increased to 330 W. The combination of a smaller cooler and higher power consumption affects its operating characteristics.

The fan control is set up to keep the card from being too noisy. The average chip temperatures are fine, but tested competing cards with larger coolers perform better in terms of GPU hotspot and memory temperatures.

In silent mode, the card is slightly quieter than average models, but memory temperatures reaching 98 °C may be a concern for some users. Those who prefer a more balanced approach can stick to performance mode, where noise levels are average and temperatures are a few degrees lower. However, the best option might be to slightly reduce the power limit and undervolt the card to keep temperatures in check.

Gigabyte might have done better to stick with the reference 304 W for the RX 9070 XT Gaming OC. On the other hand, the factory increase in the power limit gives you more room to maneuver. With the ability to adjust the power limit between -30% and +10%, you can easily reduce it to 304 W in AMD software. The advantage of the higher factory limit is that you can raise it to 363 W when overclocking, while with 304 W cards, you’ll max out at 334 W, essentially the same value Gigabyte has as default.

The cooler also has performance headroom. This doesn’t apply to the heatsink but to the fans—they usually run at 2000 RPM, but their maximum is 4300 RPM. So, if you want to play around with overclocking at the cost of higher noise, the card gives you some room for that too.

In its default settings, you get a card that, thanks to factory overclocking, offers slightly higher performance than reference models, average noise levels, and higher temperatures, but also plenty of room for manual tuning in all directions—you can go for better operating characteristics with undervolting and reducing the power limit, or you have extra headroom for further overclocking. However, this will come at the cost of higher noise.

Gigabyte might have done better to offer only the lower-power RX 9070 in this design and opt for a larger cooler with the RX 9070 XT Gaming OC. Competing models like the Pure RX 9070 XT or Pulse RX 9070 XT perform better in terms of temperatures and noise levels during normal operation.

But in the current situation, it will likely depend more on what’s available rather than having the luxury of choice. And if you want something better, Gigabyte also offers the Aorus RX 9070 XT Elite, which isn’t that much more expensive than the Gaming OC.

Pros and cons

+ Slightly higher performance thanks to factory overclocking
+ In Q mode, the card is a bit quieter than average
+ Compact design
+ 16 GB of memory
+ Room for further regulation tweaking

– Higher hotspot and memory temperatures
– In Performance mode, only average noise levels
– Occasional coil whine
– Price significantly higher than MSRP

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics cards can be purchased in the Datacomp e-store.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT delivers better price-to-performance than competing GeForce cards and 4 GB more memory than the RTX 5070.
