The following article primarily creates a database of various SSD coolers, based on which you\u2019ll be able to determine how each available model performs in terms of cooling efficiency.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/category\/motherboards+extra-tests\/\">In-depth motherboard analyses<\/a> are, among other things, a good source of information about cooler efficiency. Compared to third-party models from Akasa (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/akasa-gecko-pro-an-ssd-cooler-with-a-different-orientation\/\">Gecko Pro<\/a>), Arctic (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/tested-arctic-m2-pro-in-database-of-80-ssd-coolers-review\/\">M2<\/a>), Axagon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/axagon-clr-m2l3-6-10-triple-test-pressure-for-minimal-prices\/\">CLR-M2Lx<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/axagon-clr-m2xt-with-40-fins-for-powerful-ssds\/\">CLR-M2XT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/axagon-clr-m2-large-surface-area-fins-with-low-height\/\">CLR-M2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/axagon-clr-m2xl-only-one-ssd-cooler-can-be-the-best\/\">CLR-M2XL<\/a>), BeQuiet! However, you can still get a rough idea of the efficiency of individual coolers. However, this is not always the case, as there are variables such as the thermal conductivity of the thermal interface material (TIM) and mounting pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Mounting pressure can sometimes be very good, with a high heat transfer coefficient, but it can also be weaker. This is usually due to only partial contact with the SSD, which is typical for technically underdeveloped tool-less systems. While you can install the cooler conveniently, without the need for a screwdriver, its contact with critical components (typically the SSD controller) will be weaker.<\/p>\n<p>The above may not always apply, of course. It also depends on the design of the SSD itself\u2014thicker models (SSDs) may have better contact (i.e., contact over a larger area) with the same cooler than thinner ones. The testing methodology is described in more detail in the subsection below.<\/p>\n<h2>Methodology<\/h2>\n<p>The tests are conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-06.jpg\">in a wind tunnel, which replaces a standard PC case<\/a>. For system cooling, four Noctua NF-S12A PWM fans @550 RPM are used in a balanced ratio of two intake to two exhaust fans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/processors-methodology_07.jpg\">The intake air temperature is strictly controlled and, for maximum accuracy, is maintained within a narrow range of 21\u201321.3 \u00b0C.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/what-s-the-best-position-for-your-ssd-m-2-en\/\">findings from measurements on the impact of different positions on cooling efficiency<\/a>, standalone SSD coolers are tested in the first slot, above the graphics card. From motherboard tests, we naturally have many results for coolers (labeled as cooler 1, cooler 2, etc.) in other positions, but these are determined by their fixed locations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-86753\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-07-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-07-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-07-253x168.jpg 253w, https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-07-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/motherboards-methodology-07-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The SSD without a cooler is tested on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/even-more-features-asus-rog-strix-z790-e-gaming-wifi-test\/\">Asus ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi<\/a> motherboard in two locations\u2014in &#8220;slot 1&#8221; above the graphics card and in &#8220;slot 2&#8221; below the graphics card. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/gigabyte-b760i-aorus-pro-ddr4-small-powerful-attractively-priced-review\/27\/\">From thematic tests where we examined the dependence of SSD cooling on the chosen position, we know that there are certain differences in cooling<\/a>, although it cannot be generalized which is the &#8220;more suitable&#8221; option. This can always vary depending on factors such as whether the graphics card cooling is active or not (and, of course, on the case fan layout and the overall system cooling characteristics). In our case, with always passive graphics card cooling, placing the SSD in the second M.2 slot proved to be the worse choice in terms of cooling. Due to excessive temperature, the maximum performance was not even achieved, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/gigabyte-b760i-aorus-pro-ddr4-small-powerful-attractively-priced-review\/27\/\">sequential read speeds on the Intel platform in the PCIe 4.0 \u00d74 slot should typically range between approximately 6600\u20136900 MB\/s<\/a>. The load is applied for 10 minutes (which is sufficient time for temperatures to stabilize in the wind tunnel) using CrystalDiskMark\u2014cycles of sequential read and write operations. The power consumption during this time is approximately 6 W, which is the upper limit for M.2 SSDs and should not change even for models supporting PCIe 5.0.<\/p>\n<p>For completeness, it should be noted that the tested SSD is always in its original state with the label intact. This was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/more-than-100-models-tested-overview-of-m-2-ssd-coolers-review\/2\">in passive mode, where the fans integrated into the graphics card cooler were not involved in cooling<\/a>. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/more-than-100-models-tested-overview-of-m-2-ssd-coolers-review\/\">the same cooling performance for the SSD controller was achieved by the first SSD cooler on the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/gigabyte-z790-aorus-pro-x-white-for-raptor-lake-refresh-review\/\">Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Pro X<\/a> motherboard. This cooler even surpasses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/axagon-clr-m2xl-only-one-ssd-cooler-can-be-the-best\/\">Axagon CLR-M2XL<\/a>, which is already excellent among third-party coolers, especially for cooling the SSD controller. This, however, gives it above-standard compatibility, allowing it to fit even under expansion cards. A good example of this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/test-bequiet-mc1-compared-to-ssd-coolers-on-motherboards\/\">BeQuiet! However, it can always be noted that there is at least some reduction in temperature, which can determine whether the SSD reaches its maximum performance or not. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/more-than-100-models-tested-overview-of-m-2-ssd-coolers-review\/2\/\">The difference between &#8220;no cooler&#8221; and &#8220;the most efficient cooler&#8221; is approximately 50 degrees Celsius for the Samsung 980 Pro (1 TB).<\/a> It\u2019s difficult to determine this precisely, as the upper temperature limit is associated with throttling, and the measured temperatures do not correspond to comparable performance (when overheating, the SSD&#8217;s performance is lower than in a situation where the controller temperatures are still &#8220;acceptable&#8221; and non-restrictive).<\/p>\n<p>Whether it makes sense to invest in an SSD cooler is subjective. If you need to cool high performance, a cooler is useful, but in practice, for gaming PCs, where even the most powerful modern SSDs do not reach high power consumption under typical loads, the cooler is more of an aesthetic addition than something you can\u2019t do without. However, this can vary from case to case, and especially for SSDs supporting PCIe 5.0, some form of cooling is advisable\u2014at least as a preventive measure.
