Review: Extreme AiO

A major drawback of the exceptionally powerful GeForce RTX 5090 is the high power demands of its large GB202 chip. Even when equipped with a premium air cooler, the card still requires robust system cooling to handle its nearly 600W heat output. However, AiO liquid cooling models can offer even better thermal performance, thanks to their larger radiators with three 120mm fans, which expel hot air directly outside the case.

The RTX 5090 occupies a unique market position – a consequence of its significant performance lead over competing cards. Like its predecessors (RTX 4090, RTX 3090 Ti and Titan series), it straddles the line between enthusiast gaming and professional workloads. While featuring some limitations compared to pure workstation cards (most notably the 32GB memory capacity), it remains substantially more affordable. For pure gaming, the RTX 5090 represents expensive overkill, but for professional use it offers a cost-effective alternative to RTX Pro Blackwell cards.

Having already reviewed the GeForce RTX 5090, let’s recap its key specifications: The card features Blackwell 2.0 architecture manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm process, packing 21,760 CUDA cores, 680 texture units and 192 raster operations units. Its 32GB GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit bus delivers 1.79TB/s bandwidth. Base clock operates at 2017MHz with boost up to 2407MHz. The card supports DirectX 12 Ultimate with dedicated ray tracing and AI acceleration, while its power limit is set at 575W.

A more detailed parameter comparison with the closest models is shown in the following table.

<div id="supsystic-table-3477_8346" class="supsystic-tables-wrap " style=" width:100%; visibility: hidden; examining Asus’ flagship ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7 OC Edition, featuring factory overclocking and an extreme AiO cooler with triple 120mm fans.

.

The card comes factory overclocked. The power limit has been increased to 600 W, which is the maximum allowed by the 16-pin 12V-2×6 auxiliary power connector according to specifications. The reported typical boost clock has been raised from the reference 2407 MHz to 2560 MHz (with the option to activate OC mode at 2610 MHz in GPU Tweak III).

The card also features a dual BIOS. The reported clock speeds don’t differ between them – the difference lies solely in the cooling regulation settings. In the performance-oriented mode, the fans run at higher RPMs at the same temperatures, making the card slightly cooler and achieving marginally higher real-world clock speeds. Detailed tests of operating characteristics in the relevant chapters will show how the card’s behavior differs in terms of both fan performance and clock speeds.

The parameters of both BIOS versions, as read by GPU-Z, are shown in the screenshots below. We’ll be testing with the quieter BIOS, as the performance difference is minimal, but the same can’t be said for noise levels./p>

Primary BIOS (performance)

Secondary BIOS (quiet)

GPU-Z can only read basic monitoring values, while HWiNFO can monitor more. The cooler is divided into two parts: a water block that cools the GPU and memory, and a large metal heatsink with its own fan for cooling the card’s other components. Heat is carried away to a tall 360mm radiator equipped with three 120mm fans. Instead of traditional thermal paste, the GPU uses a special thermal pad for better conductivity. The card also features a reinforced power delivery system compared to the reference design. For overclocking and monitoring, Asus provides its GPU Tweak III software. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. However, AiO liquid cooling models can offer even better thermal performance, thanks to their larger radiators with three 120mm fans, which expel hot air directly outside the case.

Fan behavior, noise level

The fan settings and operating speeds differ between the card’s fan and the three radiator fans. Both can be adjusted in the 30-100% range, but they are controlled separately and somewhat independently.

For the card’s fan, 30% minimum means 530 RPM, while the standard radiator fans run at 1000 RPM at 30% power. At 1000 RPM they become slightly audible, and unfortunately can’t go lower, so the card is only silent when the fans are completely off.

While the card’s fan starts speeding up quickly when load begins, the radiator fans (in quiet mode) maintain a steady 1000 RPM at minimum power for a long time and only accelerate after sustained load.

From six thermal tests, I collected the fan speeds under prolonged load. These are highlighted in bold in the table – the first three measurements are quiet mode results, the next three from performance mode.

Other speed measurements are interspersed between these. Especially at the end, the values become questionable since the card seemingly can’t heat up enough to push the radiator fans to maximum speed.

This still gives you an idea of how noisy the cooler is at manual fan settings. At the lower power range regarding noise, the radiator fans dominate, while at the higher power range the card’s fan becomes louder.

<table Currently, the manufacturer offers the card in its e-store for 3,409.99 USD. This converts to approximately 3,860 EUR or 97,600 CZK including tax. In our market, few retailers list the price openly, but those that do typically offer it at slightly lower figures, usually around 82,000 to 85,000 CZK.

It’s hardly meaningful to discuss the price or the price-to-performance ratio in the current situation, where basic RTX 5090 models are available in stock for similar prices, while most better-equipped, unavailable models don’t even have listed prices. Hopefully, this will be resolved over time.

However, we can expect the price premium over a standard air-cooled RTX 5090 to be extreme—significantly higher than the actual performance gains delivered by the improved cooler and factory overclocking.

What likely won’t see dramatic changes are the performance and operating characteristics. Clock speeds are noticeably higher than those of the Founders Edition, and the power limit is set at 600W—the theoretical maximum of the 12V-2×6 connector. Given these parameters, one might expect dual power connectors and perhaps an even higher power limit for overclocking. However, this would mostly appeal to record-breaking enthusiasts. For typical use, further increasing power consumption for minimal performance gains isn’t worthwhile. If owners do decide to tweak settings, they’ll more likely focus on reducing power draw instead.

The operating characteristics match the card’s premium features – despite operating at the 600W limit, the cooler in Q mode is exceptionally quiet. In terms of noise levels, it outperforms most graphics cards on the market, including many with significantly lower performance. Its acoustic profile is similar to the 300W Radeon RX 9070 XT Pulse (which stands out for its quiet operation among other cards) despite offering double the performance. Temperatures remain so low that reducing fan speeds further would be possible, though at that point the power delivery coils become audible. It’s unfortunate that the radiator fans can’t be set below 1000 RPM. The card is only completely silent in passive cooling mode – once the fans spin up, it remains audible even under light loads. A BIOS update could theoretically address this, though it’s uncertain whether such an update will ever come.

Systems with traditional air-cooled RTX 5090 models will generally be louder anyway – even if the card itself is quiet, the heat it generates still needs to be exhausted from the case, which can’t be done completely silently. The only thing missing for perfection is the ability to compare this card with other liquid-cooled models – competing manufacturers offer similar solutions with AIO coolers featuring triple-fan setups.

The advantage of an AIO-cooled RTX 5090 in reducing case air temperature becomes particularly evident when looking at CPU temperatures. The first graph below shows temperature readings for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D cooled by a Noctua NH-D15 G2 from our RTX 5090 Founders Edition test. During a ten-minute F1 2024 benchmark, maximum CPU temperatures exceeded 66°C, with peaks above 70°C.

With Asus’s liquid-cooled RTX 5090, the CPU temperature under the same load is about 15°C lower. This clearly demonstrates that the card doesn’t contribute to heating up the case interior.

In the default Performance mode (P mode), the card’s noise level becomes rather average, and the benefits aren’t really worth it—you get slightly lower temperatures and just a few extra dozen megahertz.

If we set aside the exorbitant price, the Asus Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090 OC Edition delivers performance that surpasses even typical RTX 5090 standards, while maintaining low temperatures and noise levels that outperform most cards on the market—including many with much lower performance. For these reasons, it deserves our top-notch award.

Pros and cons

+ Unmatched gaming and application performance
+ Performance increase exceeds air-cooled RTX 5090 models
+ Cooler has massive headroom, remains quiet in Q mode even under load
+ 32 GB memory
+ Support for DLSS 4 and other proprietary Nvidia technologies
+ Significant ray tracing performance improvement over previous generation
+ Power connector monitoring

– Price
– Significantly noisier in P mode with negligible performance difference
– Substantial premium over base models, poor price/performance ratio
– Power consumption at the limit of connector specifications
– Average coil whine noise levels
– No headroom in power limit

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards can be purchased in the Datacomp e-store.

⠀
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

A major drawback of the exceptionally powerful GeForce RTX 5090 is the high power demands of its large GB202 chip.
