The number of stream processors has been reduced from 4096 to 3584, and the number of texture units has dropped from 256 to 224. Both models feature 128 raster units. The full Navi 48 chip has 64 cores for ray tracing computations and 128 tensor cores, while the RX 9070 reduces these to 112 and 56, respectively.

Both models share identical cache configurations, memory capacity (16GB GDDR6), memory bus width (256-bit), and memory bandwidth (20.1 Gb/s).

The models differ in clock speeds and power limits: The RX 9070 XT features a 2400 MHz base game clock with boost up to 3970 MHz, while the RX 9070 runs at 2070 MHz base (2520 MHz boost). Power limits stand at 304W for the XT model versus 220W for the base variant – though third-party overclocked RX 9070 models will likely increase these limits.

Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC

Gigabyte offers the higher-performance Radeon RX 9070 XT in two series: premium AORUS Radeon RX 9070 XT Elite 16G and more affordable Gaming models. The Gaming line includes both the tested RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G and standard RX 9070 XT Gaming 16G.

For the more budget-friendly RX 9070 we’re examining today, Gigabyte provides just one variant – Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC 16G. Its factory overclock raises the base game clock from 2070 MHz to 2210 MHz and boost clock from 2520 MHz to 2700 MHz. We’ll examine real-world operating clock speeds in our performance testing section.

The Gigabyte card (foreground) features a slightly more compact design than the Pulse RX 9070 XT or Pure RX 9070 models we previously tested.

Even this budget-friendly model retains dual BIOS functionality, differing only in cooling profiles. The Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC is one of the more reasonably priced options. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. It uses the same cooling and board layout as the more powerful Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC, but thanks to lower power consumption, it runs cooler and quieter—making it a more compelling choice for many users.

Closing summary

The MSRP for the Radeon RX 9070 XT should be around 599 USD, while the more affordable Radeon RX 9070 is expected to retail for 549 USD (approximately 612 EUR or 15,300 CZK). In reality, actual pricing is noticeably worse, but RX 9070 models can already be found in stock for under 18,000 CZK. Available RX 9070 XT models, meanwhile, are about 100 EUR (or roughly 3,000 CZK) more expensive.

The Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC is currently one of the cheapest RX 9070 models on the market, selling for around 18,000 CZK or 734 EUR. While still higher than its intended price, the difference is no longer dramatic. Competing GeForce RTX 5070 cards are already cheaper but offer lower performance and less memory capacity. On the other hand, the RTX 5070 Ti delivers significantly better performance but comes at a substantially higher price – putting it closer to the more powerful RX 9070 XT.

Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC: Emphasis on price

The design of the Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC makes it clear that Gigabyte prioritized cost reduction. Given the small price gap between the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, this makes sense – there’s little reason to invest in a premium RX 9070 model when it could end up costing the same as budget RX 9070 XT variants. While you can certainly find cards with larger coolers, lower component temperatures, and similar (or better) noise levels, these upgrades typically come at a higher price.

The cooler on the AMD Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC doesn’t differ dramatically from the more powerful RX 9070 XT Gaming OC. For those interested in the cheaper model, that’s great news—while the RX 9070 XT Gaming OC cooler didn’t have much thermal headroom in quiet mode at low fan speeds, the 245W RX 9070 offers a more comfortable margin. Temperatures are lower, noise levels too, and on both BIOS profiles the card is quieter than average, leaving a noticeably better overall impression than the faster model, which has to dissipate 330W.

In general, the cheaper model makes a better impression than the RX 9070 XT Gaming OC. Even in terms of price-to-performance, the RX 9070 no longer looks as unfavorable as at launch, when the price difference between the two models was just 50 USD. However, this is largely because manufacturers are marking up available RX 9070 XT models more aggressively than the RX 9070. We’ll see how prices evolve once the market stabilizes.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

Pros and cons

+ Slightly higher performance thanks to factory overclocking
+ Very quiet in Silent mode; quieter than average even in Performance mode
+ Compact design
+ 16 GB of memory
+ Cooler has performance headroom
+ Headroom left for tweaking fan settings and overclocking
+ More affordable than the RX 9070 XT

– Higher hotspot and memory temperatures
– Occasional coil whine (though quieter than the RX 9070 XT Gaming OC)
– Ongoing overpricing hurts the price/performance ratio

Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards can be purchased in the Datacomp e-store.

Graphics cards from the latest generation are still pricey, but more affordable models have become easier to find in stores.
