With this extra cooling capacity, the fans on the more efficient RTX 5080 can run at lower speeds, resulting in excellent thermals and minimal noise. However, this high-end cooling solution also drives up the price—you’re paying a premium for one of the best factory-overclocked RTX 5080 cards available.

A detailed description of the new technologies brought by Nvidia’s new graphics cards has been compiled by Jan Olšan in the article Blackwell: GeForce RTX 5000 architecture and innovations. It introduces the individual graphics chips Nvidia is using in the new cards, the new GDDR7 memory type, and also covers changes in cache memory, GPU compute units, updates to shaders and tensor cores, as well as improved compute units for ray tracing. The new generation of GeForce also brings support for new standards such as DisplayPort 2.1b and PCI Express 5.0.

With the new generation of cards, DLSS capabilities are evolving as well. It now supports Multi Frame Generation, which allows the generation of up to three intermediate frames, and introduces Nvidia Reflex 2, the second generation of its latency-reduction technology. This includes Frame Warp, which adjusts object and camera motion in rendered frames based on the player’s most recent input device movement data received just before the already rendered frame is displayed. A more detailed explanation can be found in the aforementioned article.

We’ve already covered the reference specifications, so we’ll just recap them in a table and move on to the actual card, which, thanks to factory overclocking, comes with slightly higher clocks.

A more detailed parameter comparison with the closest models is shown in the following table.

<div In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. The minimum speed that can be set via fan control is 30%, at which point they spin at 1000 RPM, generating a measured noise level of 30.5 dBA. They become noticeably louder somewhere around 1400 RPM.

Under sustained load, once the card heats up, fan speeds in Silent mode hover around 1300–1400 RPM. This corresponds to a noise level of 35–36 dBA. So, the card isn’t completely silent, but the cooler is relatively quiet. If this still bothers you, the fact that the average temperatures of the GPU and memory stay below 70 °C means reducing the fan speed to around 1200 RPM shouldn’t be a problem, and at that point, the noise drops to around 33 dBA.

With the Gaming BIOS, fan speeds reach 1640 RPM, and noise hits 40 dBA – more of an average level. However, the performance gain is practically unmeasurable and temperatures only improve by a few degrees. Not really worth the increased noise.

Coil whine is average, comparable to other cards with similar power consumption and performance. In Silent mode, the coils can occasionally be heard over the fans; in Gaming mode, they blend in with the fan noise.

VThe fans can spin up to 3000 RPM, leaving plenty of headroom for cooling experiments – though no one would want to run the card long-term at 3000 RPM with noise levels reaching 59.3 dBA.

Cyberpunk 2077, RT Medium, 3840 × 2160 (BIOS Gaming)

The first test set comes from the Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark, with RT Medium settings at a resolution of 3840 × 2160. For now, this only applies to a handful of models, and even then, prices are still significantly higher than the MSRP, often by several thousand crowns or hundreds of euros.

The MSI RTX 5080 Suprim SOC remains one of the more scarce models, so the current pricing seen in online stores – hovering around 40,000 to 50,000 CZK – shouldn’t yet be taken too seriously.

If retailers are still asking CZK 40,000 (1500–1600 eur) or more in a few weeks’ time, you’d be better off settling for a cheaper option. Not even the best cooler is worth such a steep premium – especially when absolute silence is unattainable anyway, given the coil whine and the inevitable case fans in the system.

Still, it’s unlikely the price of MSI’s premium Suprim lineup will drop to the level of the previously tested RTX 5080 Gaming OC from Gigabyte, which doesn’t fall far behind in performance or noise. What it lacks compared to the Suprim SOC is mainly the premium finish – something Gigabyte reserves for its Aorus line.

How fast and how far the price of the MSI GeForce RTX 5080 Suprim SOC will fall is anyone’s guess. So for now, let’s focus on its operational characteristics – when the time to buy comes, you can decide based on the market conditions.

The RTX 5080 is not exactly a low-power card, and even the large-cooled models I’ve tested so far aren’t entirely silent. Cheaper cards with smaller coolers are likely to fare worse in this regard. The Suprim, however, will definitely rank among the quietest cards available.

In Gaming mode, noise levels aren’t particularly impressive – the cooler lands somewhere around average. But given the performance of the RTX 5080, that’s not a bad outcome. And our tests show that switching to Silent mode brings a noticeable drop in noise with virtually no sacrifice in performance. In Silent mode, it ranks among the quietest high-performance GPUs, and you don’t even need to tweak the fan curves. That said, you can – and thanks to the thermal headroom, you can lower the fan speed to a level where the card becomes practically inaudible inside a case. Coil whine might still be a concern, but that’s true for almost any RTX 5080.

If you’re more inclined toward overclocking, the card allows you to raise the power limit to 400 W – as with most factory-OC’d models – and the cooler has enough thermal capacity to handle it without becoming excessively loud.

The only real unknown is how much the MSI RTX 5080 Suprim SOC will cost once RTX 5080 cards become widely available. As usual, the performance uplift of premium OC models doesn’t match their price hike. The higher cost is mostly about extras and build quality – any performance gain from factory overclocking is marginal. So the price-to-performance ratio will certainly be worse than that of more affordable models, including some of MSI’s own.

Still, in terms of features and operating characteristics, it stands ahead of most RTX 5080s on the market – and for that, it earns our top-notch award.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

Pros and cons

+ High performance in both games and professional applications
+ Robust design, rich features, a dual BIOS, factory overclock
+ Using the Silent BIOS, it’s significantly quieter than most GPUs on the market—including some with much lower power consumption.
+ Cooler has substantial thermal headroom
+ Plenty of headroom for additional overclocking
+ Support for DLSS 4 and other proprietary Nvidia technologies
+ Major performance boost in ray tracing compared to previous generation

– High price with a significant markup over MSRP, resulting in a less favorable price-to-performance ratio
– In Gaming BIOS mode, noise levels are average despite minimal performance gains
– Noticeable coil whine, comparable to others in the same class
– At 36 cm long, it won’t fit in some modern PC cases

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 graphics cards can be purchased in the Datacomp e-store.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

The GeForce RTX 5080 Suprim SOC features a vapor chamber cooler just as massive as the one found on the 600W RTX 5090 Suprim SOC.
