Review: Great Value

The Prime series is one of Asus’s newer product lines, aimed at budget-minded customers. By combining lower prices with solid features, it delivers an attractive price-to-performance ratio—and that goes for graphics cards, too. The Prime GeForce RTX 5070 12GB OC Edition is one of the most affordable options currently available. Yet it avoids the typical pitfalls of low-cost models—clearly, Asus didn’t skimp where it matters.

A detailed description of the new technologies brought by Nvidia’s new graphics cards has been compiled by Jan Olšan in the article Blackwell: GeForce RTX 5000 architecture and innovations. It introduces the individual graphics chips Nvidia is using in the new cards, the new GDDR7 memory type, and also covers changes in cache memory, GPU compute units, updates to shaders and tensor cores, as well as improved compute units for ray tracing. The new generation of GeForce also brings support for new standards such as DisplayPort 2.1b and PCI Express 5.0.

With the new generation of cards, DLSS capabilities are evolving as well. It now supports Multi Frame Generation, which allows the generation of up to three intermediate frames, and introduces Nvidia Reflex 2, the second generation of its latency-reduction technology. This includes Frame Warp, which adjusts object and camera motion in rendered frames based on the player’s most recent input device movement data received just before the already rendered frame is displayed. A more detailed explanation can be found in the aforementioned article.

The GeForce RTX 5070 uses Nvidia’s third released chip based on the Blackwell architecture. It carries the code name GB205 and comes equipped with 6144 stream processors, 192 texture units, and 80 raster units. Unlike higher-end models with a 256-bit bus and 16 GB memory, it features a narrowed 192-bit memory bus, resulting in a reduced total memory capacity of 12 GB.

For a detailed comparison of RTX 5070 specifications with similar GeForce models, refer to the table below. We now turn our attention to the Asus card itself.

<div id="supsystic-table-3476_8394" class="supsystic-tables-wrap " style=" PRIME-RTX5070-O12G with P/N 90YV0M10-M0NM00, ranks among the cheapest RTX 5070 models from Asus. Slightly more affordable is the non-overclocked version, Prime GeForce RTX 5070 GDDR7 12GB, and the only cheaper options are two variants of the Dual GeForce RTX 5070, which are not yet available in our market. Positioned above these is the more expensive TUF GeForce RTX 5070 12GB OC Ed., the overclocked version of which has already been reviewed, and two models of the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 5070.

The card comes factory-overclocked. The specified typical boost clock speed is increased from the reference 2512 MHz to 2557 MHz. Actual clock speeds are higher, depending on load and GPU power consumption. Detailed clock speed behavior can be found in the operating characteristics sections of this review.

The card features two BIOS modes labeled P mode and Q mode. P mode is the default, while Q mode can be enabled using a switch next to the power connector. In the GPU-Z screenshots below, the specifications and data shown first are from the default P mode BIOS, followed by Q mode.

Basic parameters like clock speeds and power limits do not differ between the two BIOS modes. The main difference lies in the fan speed curve regulation based on temperature sensors on the card. The typical boost clock in both BIOS modes is raised from the reference 2512 MHz to 2625 MHz, and the GDDR7 memory runs at the standard 28 Gb/s.

The power limit is set at the reference 250 W, adjustable within a range of 175–300 W, which equates to -30% to +20%. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large, power-hungry, high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 rpm. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. Yet it avoids the typical pitfalls of low-cost models—clearly, Asus didn’t skimp where it matters.

Fan behavior, noise level

Before diving into the noise measurements, it’s worth noting that the test unit had one noticeably louder fan compared to the other two. While the middle and rear fans were nearly silent and registered just 29 dBA at their minimum 700 RPM, the fan near the bracket produced a rustling noise even at low speeds, pushing the noise level up to 32.1 dBA.

At higher RPMs, this noise turned into a distinct rattling. I disassembled the cooler to inspect whether any plastic parts or burrs were rubbing, but all clearances seemed sufficient to rule that out. Unlike the other two fans, this one remained audible even when manually spun outside the shroud.

The test unit likely reflects a downside of the more durable – yet sometimes noisier – ball bearings used in the fans. Unfortunately, based on just one sample, it’s impossible to tell whether this is a common issue or simply bad luck with an outlier.

When TechPowerUp reviewed the RTX 5060 Ti with a similar cooler, they didn’t report such issues, and the card achieved lower noise levels at minimal fan speeds than the TUF-series model. The Prime RTX 5070, on paper, should also be quieter at 1230–1280 RPM than most GPUs in the same segment. However, with this particular sample, the problematic fan’s bearings or motor were more audible.

In Quiet mode, this might get drowned out by the rest of the system fans, but in Performance mode, a clear clicking noise was noticeable at 1800–2000 RPM.

If all three fans matched the quality of the quieter ones, noise levels in the lower RPM range could be at least 3 dBA lower, potentially making the card quieter than the Gigabyte RTX 5070 Gaming, which costs about 90 USD more and measured 33.8–34.8 dBA in silent mode. The tested Prime RTX 5070 reached 35.8–36 dBA in Q mode. In Performance mode, the fans ramped up to 1800–2000 RPM, where noise levels hit 42–45 dBA – about 2–3 dBA higher than what’s typical for more budget-oriented GPU series.

The lowest manually settable fan speed is 30%, corresponding to 700 RPM. With low-profile fans, this typically keeps overall noise below the sound meter’s detection threshold. In this case, the overall noise level was just 29 dBA with only the quieter fans running—until the third, noisier fan kicked in and raised the card’s total noise output to 32.1 dBA. Yet it avoids the typical pitfalls of low-cost models—clearly, Asus didn’t skimp where it matters.

Final thoughts

Since the launch of the RTX 5070, availability has improved and prices have stabilized, now significantly lower than two months ago. The pricing has also been influenced by the recent fluctuation in the USD exchange rate. The cheapest models have now dropped by several euros below the 635 EUR MSRP, although most available cards start closer to 650 EUR.

The Prime GeForce RTX 5070 OC Edition is available for approximately 670 EUR. For one of the most affordable models, it delivers excellent thermal and acoustic performance – at least in Quiet mode. There are cards on the market that offer noticeably better temperatures, slightly lower noise levels, and marginally higher clocks and performance – one such example is the previously reviewed TUF GeForce RTX 5070, which boasts a significantly larger heatsink. Still, few users will find the extra cost of roughly 130 EUR worthwhile for that slight difference.

In its default P mode, cooler noise is fairly average, and in the tested unit, one fan was noticeably louder than the other two – details on that is explained in the dedicated noise section.

In Quiet mode, the card ranks among the quiet models in terms of noise output. This comes at the cost of higher temperatures compared to premium variants, though we have seen worse thermal values on other cards..

In Quiet mode, a faint coil whine from the power delivery can occasionally be heard behind the fans, but in P mode, the louder fan noise drowns out the whine completely.

Overall, the card delivers an excellent price/performance ratio compared to most other RTX 5070 models. „While cooling in Q mode isn’t completely silent, it’s impressively quiet for its price—quieter than some more expensive RTX 5070 models. Naturally, premium GeForce RTX 5070 models offer more, but at a significantly higher cost. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option that still delivers solid value, the Prime RTX 5070 is well worth considering—and it earns our award.

The remaining question is whether to go with the RTX 5070 or choose the competing Radeon RX 9070 instead. The price difference for the most affordable Radeon models isn’t significant, but they’re likely to fall short in terms of noise and thermal performance. In the end, the key factor is whether you value Nvidia’s proprietary technologies, which are supported in far more games.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

Pros and Cons

+ Excellent operating characteristics
+ Dual BIOS, factory overclock
+ Quiet cooling in Q mode
+ Cooler has performance headroom
+ Option to increase power limit by 50 W for overclocking
+ Support for DLSS 4 and other proprietary Nvidia technologies
+ Performance improvement in ray tracing compared to the previous generation

– Only 12 GB of memory compared to 16 GB on the RTX 5060 Ti or RX 9070
– Some users may miss the lack of ARGB lighting
– You can still hear some coil whine

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 graphics cards can be purchased in the Datacomp e-store.

⠀
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

The Prime series is one of Asus’s newer product lines, aimed at budget-minded customers.
