Though this mesh slightly restricts airflow and impacts acoustics, it also blocks undesirable particles – including dust – from entering the case.

Dust protection is also provided by a filter located at the bottom, beneath the power supply. It’s held by two screws at the rear, fastened to the metal frame. Still, there’s a risk of damage during removal. The panel corners are reinforced with steel, but a hard bump could still chip or crack the glass. So handle with care – while Fractal Design did aim to minimize the risk, tempered glass remains fragile and should be protected during transport.

Component layout follows a conventional scheme – the motherboard (Mini-ITX to E-ATX) is mounted up front, along with the GPU, while the bottom tunnel houses the ATX PSU and two HDD trays. Fractal Design likely anticipates that many users will install a liquid cooler up top, altering airflow and reducing positive pressure. The rear panel is also heavily perforated to balance this airflow. The case’s panels are made of thick 0.9 mm steel.

The installed fans can be repositioned as needed – for instance, all three front-mounted fans (Fractal Design Aspect 14 PWM) can be moved to serve as exhausts, with two placed on the top panel and one at the rear. This setup is often ideal when using a tower CPU cooler, especially in builds that don’t include additional fans. Naturally, it’s not necessary to move all the fans; you might, for example, keep one at the front to maintain airflow over components like hard drives or the graphics card. Such a layout can also be used to establish a negative pressure configuration.

A four-channel fan hub is located at the rear on the right-hand side (behind the right panel) for powering multiple fans. But first, we’ll zoom in on some details – essentially a look at what this large Fractal Design case has to offer.

Fractal Design North XL with installed components

Given the large size of the case, it supports large components, including big or tall CPU coolers. For testing, we’re using the NH-D12L chromax.black cooler – one of the shorter tower coolers (we need compact ones for case testing to ensure compatibility with narrower models). In this case, however, it fits with plenty of room to spare. Fractal Design states that the North XL Chalk White TG Clear supports tower coolers up to 185 mm in height, which should comfortably accommodate virtually all currently available air coolers on the market.

If you’re considering a liquid cooling setup, the top panel supports radiators up to 360 mm in length, including models with extra thickness – up to 70 mm. Even radiators that are 38 mm thick are supported. Combined with standard 25 mm fans, the dimensions still work out well for top-mounted liquid cooling setups. If you prefer installing a liquid cooler in the front, there’s room for even larger units – up to 420 mm in length and 84 mm in depth. That means even oversized radiators and extra-thick fans can potentially be installed together. The Fractal Design North XL is built to accommodate such configurations.

Graphics cards are supported up to 413 mm in length – longer than any existing graphics card on the market. This figure includes clearance with the front fans pre-installed. There are no constraints on GPU thickness either. The North XL includes up to seven PCIe slots, meaning that it can handle even the thickest graphics cards with ease.

We’ve already mentioned support for oversized E-ATX motherboards. It’s worth noting, however, how cleverly Fractal Design has adapted the cable grommets for them. The second row of grommets, closer to the front intake fans, accommodates motherboards up to 330 mm in width. Even PCBs this width don’t obscure the grommets – their placement is just right. The first row of grommets is laid out to fit ATX-standard widths (244 mm). Smaller motherboards, however, fare worse in terms of grommet alignment.

Although the case officially supports Mini-ITX boards, certain details – such as the length of the front-panel button cable – can be problematic. It may not reach the internal motherboard header in some Mini-ITX setups, particularly in cases where the board sits high inside the case (as Mini-ITX often does). For larger motherboards – the ones this case is primarily designed for – there are no such issues.

There’s plenty of room in the rear of the case for cable routing. Space won’t be a limiting factor – there’s a generous amount. From the tray to the side panel, there is 25 mm of clearance. Bulkier cable bundles might start pressing against and bulging the panel, but with tidy cable management, this shouldn’t be a problem.

There are two 3.5″ drive trays located behind the front intake fans. But first, we’ll zoom in on some details – essentially a look at what this large Fractal Design case has to offer.

Testing methodology

How much does system cooling affect overall heat buildup in a PC build? That’s the first question we aim to answer in every case test. We analyze thermal performance across a range of noise levels – starting with a near-silent “31 dBA” mode, moving through very low (“33 dBA”), still low (“36 dBA”), moderately low (“39 dBA”), then scaling up to medium (“42 dBA”), high (“45 dBA”), and maximum performance profiles. These higher modes naturally bring increased noise levels, but for some users the boost in cooling performance may justify it.

Not every case comes equipped with fans suited for each of these modes. Some lack slow-spinning, low-noise fans; others don’t support high-speed models, which makes it impossible to test them under high-performance conditions.

We measure noise from the left diagonal side of the case. The sound meter (Reed R8080) or microphone (miniDSP UMIK-1) is placed 30 cm from the front-left corner of the chassis at a 45° horizontal and 30° vertical angle. To improve signal resolution, we use a parabolic collar. Once a case is tuned to a target noise level, its acoustic profile is analyzed in TrueRTA at a resolution of 1/24 octave – this helps us identify specific tonal peaks or resonance issues that might contribute to an unpleasant acoustic signature.

Noise measurements reflect only the sound of the case fans. This in order to help maintain consistency across results in a large database. Many cases are optimized for AIO liquid coolers, with default fan configurations favoring intake-heavy airflow. The idea is that radiator fans handle exhaust. We avoid this due to the high variability in radiator aerodynamics, and instead stick to standardized air coolers. All testing uses Thermal Hero Quantum thermal paste, reapplied regularly to avoid results drifting due to aging paste.
