Pure Base 501 Airflow (BG074). The test model features solid metal panels on both sides – non-transparent – each lined with sound-dampening material. Foam. In short, you’re dealing with a design rooted in the old school, something increasingly rare these days. Despite that, the purchase price of this case remains relatively low, close to the ground.

While the recently reviewed “DX” model represents the top of the BeQuiet! Pure Base 501 lineup, the “Airflow” variant is more of a basic entry. You’ll recognize this right away by the fact that both side panels are made of metal (instead of one being glass), which some users may actually see as an advantage. And the lower price – in line with the more modest features – is likely attractive to just about everyone. While several design elements clearly indicate cost savings, there’s still a strong emphasis on cooling. BeQuiet! Pure Base 501 Airflow sports a classic tower design – measuring 463 mm in height (including feet), 450 mm in depth, and 231 mm in width. Unlike its DX sibling, the Airflow model features solid steel side panels instead of tempered glass, and it omits any ARGB lighting elements. Where the DX version includes light guides running along the front panel, the Airflow model does away with them entirely, opting instead for a fully perforated front.

The perforated front is covered with holes approximately 1.6 mm in diameter. This perforation spans the entire surface. On the Pure Base 501 DX, the center of the panel and areas with light guides are solid, meaning non-breathable. This makes the Pure Base 501 Airflow panel more breathable. The question, of course, is how it impacts cooling. The effect on airflow is certainly positive, though not dramatically so – the improvement is relatively minor. Still, it’s fair to say that in terms of front panel cooling, there’s some “improvement.”

Connectivity-wise, the case keeps up with current standards. The front panel features a 10-gigabit USB-C port (standard 3.2 Gen 2), flanked by two USB-A ports with 5 Gb/s speeds. Both standards take full advantage of the internal connectors available for front panel use, maximizing compatibility with what motherboards can generally support. That said, it’s ideal to use the second 19-pin USB 3.2 Gen 1 connector as well, but many motherboards don’t include this header, which would leave some ports inactive anyway. In the Pure Base 501 Airflow, the side panels use the tab system to engage with the opposite side (the case frame), followed by a final securing step – fastening with screws from the rear. Notably, these are thumb screws, allowing for easy hand tightening.

Both side panels are lined with material that somewhat absorbs internal noise and also adds rigidity. That’s the first question we aim to answer in every case test. We analyze thermal performance across a range of noise levels – starting with a near-silent “31 dBA” mode, moving through very low (“33 dBA”), still low (“36 dBA”), moderately low (“39 dBA”), then scaling up to medium (“42 dBA”), high (“45 dBA”), and maximum performance profiles. These higher modes naturally bring increased noise levels, but for some users the boost in cooling performance may justify it.

Not every case comes equipped with fans suited for each of these modes. Some lack slow-spinning, low-noise fans; others don’t support high-speed models, which makes it impossible to test them under high-performance conditions.

We measure noise from the left diagonal side of the case. The sound meter (Reed R8080) or microphone (miniDSP UMIK-1) is placed 30 cm from the front-left corner of the chassis at a 45° horizontal and 30° vertical angle. To improve signal resolution, we use a parabolic collar. Once a case is tuned to a target noise level, its acoustic profile is analyzed in TrueRTA at a resolution of 1/24 octave – this helps us identify specific tonal peaks or resonance issues that might contribute to an unpleasant acoustic signature.

Noise measurements reflect only the sound of the case fans. Despite that, the purchase price of this case remains relatively low, close to the ground.

Conclusion

The case performed very well in our tests. Granted, at a price of around 95 EUR, it’s not exactly a budget model. However, the Pure Base 501 Airflow is still among the more affordable cases that deliver this level of intense cooling. Two efficient fans combined with a highly breathable front panel make it suitable for even higher-end components. It’s not just about what fits – it’s also about how quietly something like a GPU can run. That depends heavily on the efficiency of case airflow, and our results suggest that the Pure Base 501 Airflow performs on par with much more expensive models. Models that already have a good reputation (stay tuned as we continue adding more cases and configurations to confirm this further).

Despite not being particularly large, the Pure Base 501 Airflow is an average-sized mid-tower that can still accommodate truly powerful components and allow them to operate more quietly. This includes large graphics cards and high-performance CPU coolers – even tall dual-tower designs or a 360 mm AIO. All of this is possible while still being considered a mid-size, reasonably priced case.

The Pure Base 501 Airflow also has advantages over similarly priced or cheaper models in areas like sound damping on both side panels (which also helps reduce HDD noise) and its overall sturdy construction. Of course, we’re still talking about a lower-range product, but BeQuiet! avoids using thin, flimsy steel panels that flex easily. The Pure Base 501 Airflow maintains a higher standard of build quality than what is usually found in the low-end segment.

If we had to point out any drawbacks with the Pure Base 501, similar to the DX variant, we’d mention the lack of rubber grommets on cable pass-throughs and the absence of a fan hub. It would certainly be a welcome inclusion, but it might also affect the price – and with just two fans, connecting them directly to the motherboard is relatively straightforward.

Modern motherboards typically include more than two system fan headers, so a hub isn’t strictly necessary. Still, a simple one could have been included. But again, it depends on what that would do to the pricing. And considering what the Pure Base 501 Airflow offers, we think the price is well set. For budget-conscious builds with a goal of staying understated and quiet, it’s a solid choice. A “Smart Buy”?
