It stood out for its combination of very good thermals and acoustics and an attractive price. However, one of the fans was lower quality, making the card noisier than it should have been. I decided to retest it with the white version. The good news is that the fan issue didn’t recur. As for overall noise levels, though, there’s still not much improvement.

A detailed description of the new technologies brought by Nvidia’s new graphics cards has been compiled by Jan Olšan in the article Blackwell: GeForce RTX 5000 architecture and innovations. It introduces the individual graphics chips Nvidia is using in the new cards, the new GDDR7 memory type, and also covers changes in cache memory, GPU compute units, updates to shaders and tensor cores, as well as improved compute units for ray tracing. The new generation of GeForce also brings support for new standards such as DisplayPort 2.1b and PCI Express 5.0.

With the new generation of cards, DLSS capabilities are evolving as well. It now supports Multi Frame Generation, which allows the generation of up to three intermediate frames, and introduces Nvidia Reflex 2, the second generation of its latency-reduction technology. This includes Frame Warp, which adjusts object and camera motion in rendered frames based on the player’s most recent input device movement data received just before the already rendered frame is displayed. A more detailed explanation can be found in the aforementioned article.

The GeForce RTX 5070 uses Nvidia’s third GPU based on the Blackwell architecture. Internally labeled as the GB205, it comes with 6,144 CUDA cores, 192 texture units, and 80 ROPs. Unlike higher-end models that feature a 256-bit memory interface and 16 GB of VRAM, this GPU is limited to a 192-bit bus and therefore ships with 12 GB of memory. The RTX 5070 is currently the only desktop GeForce card utilizing this particular GPU.

A detailed comparison of the RTX 5070’s specifications with its closest relatives in the GeForce lineup is available in the table below. From now on, let’s focus on the tested Asus model.

<div id="supsystic-table-3476_8394" the same model in black, which, with a starting price around 608 EUR, ranks among Asus’s most affordable RTX 5070 cards. Slightly cheaper should be the non-overclocked version: the Prime GeForce RTX 5070 GDDR7 12GB. In practice, however, that’s not the case in some markets, where limited availability means the OC version (Prime RTX 5070 O12G) can currently be found for less than the base 12G variant, which starts at 660 EUR.

The only cheaper options are two Dual GeForce RTX 5070 variants, though they are not widely available yet. Above them sit the TUF GeForce RTX 5070 12GB OC Edition, which we’ve already tested, and two ROG Strix models.

The white version of the Prime RTX 5070 sits above the Dual and black Prime versions in price. It currently sells for 697 EUR, so be prepared for a noticeable markup.

The card comes factory overclocked. The advertised boost clock is increased from the reference 2512 MHz to 2557 MHz. Actual boost clocks will vary depending on load and power consumption. You’ll find the GPU clock speed behavior under load in the sections with operating characteristics.

It features dual BIOS support, labeled P mode and Q mode. The base specs such as clock speeds and power limits remain the same between the two; the main difference is in the fan curve. In both BIOS modes, the boost clock is increased to 2625 MHz, while memory stays at the standard 28 Gbps GDDR7.

P mode is the default. Q mode can be enabled via a switch near the power connector. Below are GPU-Z screenshots showing P mode first, followed by Q mode settings.

The power limit is the reference 250 W, with an adjustable range between 175–300 W (–30% to +20%). I decided to retest it with the white version. The good news is that the fan issue didn’t recur. As for overall noise levels, though, there’s still not much improvement.

Test build

Reviewers usually test the performance, thermals, and noise of graphics cards on open-air test benches. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large power-hungry high-end graphics cards. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Traditional aliasing falls slightly behind in image quality compared to FSR or DLSS in native resolution, i.e., Native AA or DLAA modes.

The image quality varies between anti-aliasing methods, with DLSS currently offering the highest quality, although it’s exclusive to GeForce cards. GeForce owners have no real reason to choose anything other than DLSS. To compare GeForce cards with Radeons, however, all cards are also tested with FSR.

For weaker cards, we include tests at Ultra settings without ray tracing, and for more powerful cards, we also run RT Ultra and RT Overdrive with path tracing.

Global settings Ultra

The lower, Ultra settings are tested mainly for older cards. On high-end cards, performance is bottlenecked by the CPU, so the performance increase doesn’t reflect raw GPU performance. I decided to retest it with the white version. The good news is that the fan issue didn’t recur. As for overall noise levels, though, there’s still not much improvement.

Fan behavior, noise levels

And now we get to why the retest. In the black version I previously tested, one of the fans was significantly louder during operation than the other two. While the middle and rear fans were inaudible at the minimum 700 RPM—with the sound meter holding steady at 29 dBA—the fan near the bracket produced a rustling noise even at minimum speed, and the sound level reached up to 32.1 dBA. At higher RPMs, it started to rattle. Unlike the other two, it was audible even when unscrewed from the shroud and spun by hand.

This also impacted the measured noise levels, as described in more detail in the earlier review. Because of the rattling fan, the cooler’s noise across the entire adjustable fan speed range looked like this:

Asus Prime RTX 5070 O12G OC Edition from the previous review (with the rattling fan)

And this is how the white variant turned out, which was fitted with higher-quality fan units:

Asus Prime RTX 5070 O12G White

Unfortunately, even here it can’t be said that all fans were of equal quality. In this sample, the middle fan was a bit louder. Thankfully, it wasn’t rattling or producing any sharp tones—more of a quiet rustling. While the outer fans were practically inaudible at minimum RPM, the middle one was clearly distinguishable—you could easily tell whether it was spinning or not. It’s nothing dramatic; you likely wouldn’t notice it in a typical PC setup. But in a passively cooled system at night and in complete silence, it can still be heard from about a meter away.

While the two outer fans together pushed the sound meter to 29.4 dBA at 1050 RPM, the middle fan alone reached 31.5 dBA. All three running together were only slightly louder at 31.9 dBA. Even at 1300 RPM, the difference remained around 1 dBA.

I probably won’t test another unit because of this. On Asus’s higher-end models lately, I haven’t noticed parasitic noises at low RPMs. It seems there’s more variation between individual fan units on the Prime series than is usual for more expensive models.

This unit also seems to suffer somewhat from the fact that the fans use more durable—but sometimes noisier—ball bearings, in this case, two per fan.

Newer BIOS, noisier card?

More than that, what really surprised me were the higher fan RPMs under load compared to the black variant. I’ll admit, I’m not sure to what extent this is due to the newer BIOS, chip-to-chip variation, differences in thermal transfer from the GPU to the cooler, newer driver versions, or something else entirely.

The average temperatures aren’t drastically different, but the temperature ramp-up on the white card under load is much sharper. That forces the fan control to ramp up speeds more quickly and to higher levels. In Performance mode, for instance, it hits 2000 RPM in Cyberpunk—whereas in the earlier test, the black variant reached only 1805 RPM. GPU temperatures differ by about 2 °C, not in the white card’s favor.

The load ramp-up is clearly steeper, and the power consumption graph has changed as well.

The result is that whatever the white card gains in acoustics thanks to better fans, it loses again due to the higher RPMs. Where the black card, with its problematic fan, hit 1800 RPM and 42 dBA, the white one reaches 41.6 dBA due to higher fan speeds.

Let’s look at the details:

Cyberpunk 2077, RT Medium, 3840 × 2160 (P mode)

For testing operating characteristics of high-end graphics cards, I use Cyberpunk 2077 with RT Medium settings at a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. The test consists of eight benchmark runs in a row.

Performance between the two cards differs by just a tenth of a frame per second.

The difference in average GPU clock is minimal: 2726 MHz for the black version, 2712 MHz here. I decided to retest it with the white version. The good news is that the fan issue didn’t recur. As for overall noise levels, though, there’s still not much improvement.

Final thoughts

When I tested the black Prime GeForce RTX 5070 OC Edition, it was available for 670 EUR. The price of the black version has since dropped to 608 EUR, but the white one currently costs about the same as the black model did two months ago. I don’t know to what extent this is just because the white variant arrived later—while the price of the black Prime RTX 5070 has already had time to settle, the white one hasn’t. Some surcharge for the white shroud is probably to be expected, but at the moment the price difference is too large considering the cards differ essentially only in box and shroud color. In terms of price-to-performance ratio, the white version currently fares significantly worse.

White-colored cards are generally more expensive across all manufacturers and models—usually by more than 40 EUR compared to their black counterparts.

Experience with the Asus PRIME GeForce RTX 5070 White OC Edition 12GB GDDR7

In the previous test, I was pleased with the Prime GeForce RTX 5070’s operating characteristics and favorable pricing. From the test of the “same” card in white, I mainly hoped that it would no longer have the fan issue and would perform better acoustically. That was only partially confirmed. The rattling that made the earlier card louder than it had to be didn’t recur. While not all fans were perfectly quiet—this time the middle one was somewhat noisier—the noise from the fan was no longer as sharp or pronounced, more of a slightly louder rustle compared to the edge fans.

Unlike the previous unit, where the problematic fan clearly stood out in terms of noise compared to the other two, in this sample the increased hum of the middle fan at standard operating RPMs is masked by the aerodynamic noise of the other fans.

That shouldn’t be an issue—if you’re that sensitive to noise that it would still bother you, you’re probably not considering a budget Prime model anyway, but rather something more expensive with a larger heatsink.

I was less pleased that the higher-quality fans didn’t translate to a noticeable improvement in overall noise levels. Theoretically, the card should have been quieter, but due to the higher fan RPMs, the measured noise levels ended up being nearly the same. On the plus side, the card’s acoustic profile was at least a bit more refined. I was surprised by the slightly higher temperatures and slightly different thermal behavior under load—more intense chip heating and a slightly different power draw pattern. But the differences weren’t drastic.

Due to the slightly higher fan RPMs, noise levels rose by just under 2 dBA—a difference you likely wouldn’t notice by ear unless you had both cards side by side. Temperatures differed by about 2–3 °C; memory temperatures were slightly lower. Clock speeds also varied only slightly. In terms of operating characteristics, I could simply repeat the conclusion from the last review. The P mode is really only for those who don’t want to spend much on a graphics card, want it to last as long as possible, and are willing to sacrifice quiet operation for that. With fans spinning at over 2000 RPM, the cooler noise is no better than that of entry-level cards that are merely average in terms of acoustics.

In Q mode, the situation changes, and the Prime RTX 5070 ranks among the quietest models on the market. It wouldn’t be fair to call it inaudible—it’s definitely louder than the previously tested TUF—but the resulting combination was great, because the black Prime RTX 5070 was both quiet and one of the cheapest. The same goes for the white version in terms of performance and acoustics, but when combined with the price, it’s not as attractive—you can get better for the same money.

If your priority is performance and operating characteristics and design doesn’t matter, you can get the black Prime GeForce RTX 5070—or similarly quiet competitors—for significantly less. Just not in white.

Personally, under these circumstances, I’d automatically go for the black version. But if you’re building an all-white setup, you’re probably already factoring in the extra cost—this won’t be the only component that ends up more expensive for that reason.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

Asus PRIME GeForce RTX 5070 White OC Edition 12GB GDDR7

+ Very good thermals and acoustics
+ Dual BIOS, factory overclocking
+ Quiet cooling in Q mode
+ Cooler with thermal headroom
+ Option to increase power limit by 50 W for overclocking
+ Support for DLSS 4 and other proprietary Nvidia technologies
+ Improved ray tracing performance over previous generation

− Significant premium over cheaper model
− Worse price/performance ratio than the black variant
− 4 GB less VRAM compared to RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9070

Estimated retail price incl.
