A new platform is slated to arrive after that though, most likely with a socket designated AM6, and the first information about it has now appeared online. A socket change will break CPU compatibility, but the physical dimensions are expected to be similar — meaning cooler compatibility may remain intact.

Cooler compatibility to remain?

The information about AM6 reportedly comes from Bits and Chips via their sources. The socket is said to have around 2100 contacts, compared to AM5’s 1718. This would likely be achieved by either reducing the size of the pins and increasing their density (which, by the way, would make them more fragile and harder to fix if bent), or by minimizing the unused space on the underside of the substrate of the processor package. The overall dimensions supposedly won’t change much, and the socket’s mechanical design should be similar to that of AM5.

According to Bits and Chips, cooler compatibility will be maintained — meaning existing coolers designed for AM4 and AM5 sockets should continue to work. There was a compatibility break when moving from FM2+ / AM3+ to AM4, but this isn’t such a big issue today; and even then for some older coolers from that era, adapters or DIY solutions exist.

Cooler compatibility on AMD platforms is based on two things: first, the plastic retention brackets, which are actually still compatible with some coolers that used this mounting system back in the days of Socket 939 and 754 (we’re talking about 20-year-old coolers bundled with Athlon 64 CPUs — outdated now, though it is true they featured aluminum heatsinks that were much more massive than is usual today). Most advanced coolers, however, require removing these brackets and using the mounting holes in the PCB and the backplate beneath it. And the report from Bits and Chips suggests these mounting holes will remain in the same locations. As a result, most third-party coolers from the many brands available should remain compatible without needing any additional adapters.

Socket AM6 is expected to introduce PCI Express 6.0 and DDR6 memory support. Memory technology switches are among the few reasons that explicitly require a new socket — not totally necessarily, but since motherboards will need to be replaced anyway, it makes sense to update the socket at the same time. The move to DDR6, which offers wider data paths, will account for some of the extra pins, but many will likely be used simply to strengthen power delivery. New CPUs always require higher current demands, even if overall power consumption doesn’t increase (because voltages are usually lowered), so the number of pins dedicated to power rails and ground has to keep rising.

Tip: New PCI Express 6.0 released, up to 8× faster than PCIe 3.0

Tip: DDR6: DDR6: New generation of PC memory is coming in 2027

Whether AM6 will offer additional connectivity over AM5 — like more PCI Express lanes for SSDs or chipset connections (AM5 has 16 lanes for GPUs, 8 lanes for SSDs or USB4 controllers, and 4 lanes for the chipset) — is currently unknown.

Socket AM5

Bits and Chips believes that socket AM6 — meaning desktop CPUs and motherboards with this socket — will launch in 2028. This would likely coincide with the arrival of Ryzen CPUs based on the new Zen 7 architecture. However, this appears to be more of an educated guess based on current expectations, not something actually learned now from insider sources. After all, actually discovering when the Zen 7 CPUs are going to launch would warrant a separate (and more significant) report.

The problematic IHS stays

Maintaining cooler compatibility also comes with drawbacks. AMD made this same choice with the AM5 socket, which switched from a PGA (with pins on the CPU) to an LGA design (which puts smaller, more delicate pins on the motherboard, while CPU has contact pads). However, due to differences in socket height, AM5 CPUs require a relatively thick IHS (integrated heat spreader) to match the previous cooler mounting height and ensure compatibility. This thicker IHS can hinder cooling, as it increases the distance between the cooler and the actual silicon die. While this isn’t a big issue under normal usage, it can significantly impact temperatures during overclocking or under extreme loads with high-performance CPUs.

If AMD were to forgo cooler compatibility, the IHS could be made thinner to improve thermal performance — or even replaced with a GPU-style solution, where the silicon die is exposed (without an IHS) but surrounded by a metal frame to protect it during cooler installation and removal. This solution, while potentially improving CPU thermals by enabling direct-die cooling, comes with its own downsides. It offers no protection against careless handling, like objects dropped or or impacting the die during installation, or spill from conductive thermal pastes or liquid metal. These risks have likely led manufacturers to avoid such an approach.

Since AM6 is expected to retain cooler compatibility, the thick IHS design will likely remain. However, its exact form may change slightly. Therefore, while CPU coolers will remain compatible, that may not be true accessories like processor covers, contact frames, and direct-die adapters may not be. We saw that happen last year with Intel’s Arrow Lake processors and the LGA 1851 socket.

Zdroje: Bits and Chips, VideoCardz

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>
⠀

Zen 6 based AMD Ryzen CPUs expected next year should still use the AM5 socket and remain compatible with current motherboards.
