Today, we’ll take it a step further. We’ll take advantage of the fact that the card’s design allows easy removal of the shroud and and mount different fans directly onto the heatsink—in this case, a pair of Noctua’s classic NF-A12x25. We’ll measure how the noise profile changes while keeping temperatures under load the same.

Graphics cards from Asus’s TUF series are usually built so that you can unscrew the shroud with its fans without having to remove the heatsink from the GPU die. On top of that, they often come with an above-average-sized heatsink, making them attractive candidates for a deshroud—removing the original fan shroud and replacing the stock fans with quieter, larger, more powerful, and higher-quality ones. Swapping fans can change the noise level or acoustic character of the cooler, or replace fans that produce undesirable sounds.

We’ll try this on the same card I disassembled last week to replace the thermal paste. On GPU coolers, fans are usually mounted into the shroud. Once it’s removed, you need another way to secure the fans to the card.

The quickest and easiest method is to attach the fans directly to the heatsink using a twist tie—the kind you find on nearly every cable. More commonly, people use disposable nylon zip ties. Unless you have the special reusable type, they’re not very practical. If you need to undo them—say, to reposition a fan slightly—the small ones don’t open quickly, and most people don’t have the patience for it, so they just cut them off.

The ideal solution would be to design and make a new shroud to hold the fans. That would also restore the benefit of the original robust shroud, which is screwed to the I/O bracket and helps reduce sag, easing stress on the PCB. But designing a full shroud would take too long for a quick experiment, so I went for a compromise. I took advantage of the fact that the heatsink has a sturdy metal frame along its perimeter. I designed simple clips that slide into the heatsink fins and hook onto this frame.

The clips have holes for standard rubber vibration-damping fan mounts, the kind you can get on Aliexpress. These mounts not only reduce vibration transfer from the fans to the heatsink but also create a slight gap between the fans and the fins, which helps lower noise.

Compared to the prototypes shown above, the clips have had some minor tweaks—I curved the top surface—but the basic concept is unchanged. They’re printed from PETG on a Bambulab A1 using a standard 0.4 mm nozzle and a 0.15 mm layer height. With inexpensive PETG, each clip costs just a few cents.

For strength reasons, the parts are printed so that the clips are stressed along the layer lines. This means the small “tooth” ends don’t look perfectly clean, as they’re printed from breakaway supports in mid-air.

Width-wise, the heatsink is practically made for a deshroud with 120 mm fans—the fit is nearly perfect. The fins are also divided into two blocks. In length, however, it’s less ideal: too long for just two 120 mm fans and too short for three. The stock shroud with three fans makes the card 33 cm long, but with three 120 mm fans, you’d stretch it to 360 mm, and the rear quarter of the last fan would blow into empty space.

I had two spare first-generation Noctua NF-A12x25 fans on hand, so I tried a dual-fan setup. Since the rear fin block is slightly longer, I positioned the second fan to cover the widest section of the heatsink. Another option would be moving it closer to the card’s rear edge so more of the impeller blows through the cutout in the backplate.

Four-pin PWM fans can, with the right adapter, be connected directly to the card’s seven-pin header. The pins aren’t labeled on the card, but they are on the fans’ PCBs, so the wiring can be figured out with a multimeter. For now, I skipped that experiment and connected the fans to a Corsair Commander Pro controller, regulating them purely via software in FanControl.

Standard 120 mm fans are 25 mm thick, meaning the card becomes significantly taller than with the stock shroud, occupying four slots. We’ll measure how the noise profile changes while keeping temperatures under load the same.

Test build

Reviewers usually test the performance, thermals, and noise of graphics cards on open-air test benches. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large power-hungry high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 RPM. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it keeps airflow more stable.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. This time, I tried Noctua NT-H2 applied in a thinner 0.12 mm layer.

The difference in measured temperatures and other properties was no greater than typical measurement error. The graphs below compare NT-H2 with MX-4. All subsequent measurements with the Noctua fans use NT-H2, with the heatsink screws tightened to 0.2 N·m.

In each graph, the baseline measurement is with Arctic MX-4; hovering over it should switch to the NT-H2 results.

First, let’s see how the card’s noise profile changes across the full RPM range. The stock fans are controlled directly by the card and can be adjusted via tools like GPU Tweak III or Afterburner. The Noctua fans, as mentioned, were connected to the Commander Pro and controlled through FanControl.

The stock fans peak at about 3300 RPM at 100% speed. The Noctuas max out at roughly 2000 RPM. Both the RPM and noise curves are shifted downward.

It’s a bit like taking the Asus fan graph, chopping it just past the halfway point, and stretching it across the full width—both curves end up lower. The maximum noise level is reduced, though this also means that with the stock fans at higher speeds, you can push the card to lower temperatures than with the Noctuas.

The stock shroud with three Asus Axial-tech fans | Deshroud with two Noctua NF-A12x25 fans

Same temps, lower noise levels

My initial plan was to set the replacement fans to match the stock card’s noise level and then see how performance changed. The differences were surprisingly small—temperature shifts were in the range of tenths of a degree Celsius, and other values were within the margin of error.

But realistically, if you’re replacing fans, it’s probably to lower noise rather than temperatures. So I reduced the fan speeds slightly at the target temperature, aiming to match the stock cooling performance but with lower noise.

With identical GPU temperatures, the Noctuas spun at almost the same RPMs as the stock fans, with differences ranging from –50 to +10 RPM. At the same speeds, however, they were quieter. The end result was a 2–3 dBA noise reduction, along with a slightly deeper and more pleasant noise profile of the fans.

The next set of graphs compares all operating characteristics between the stock shroud with its triple Axial-tech fans and the deshroud with two NF-A12x25s. In each graph, the baseline is with the Noctuas; In each graph, the baseline shows the Noctua results; hovering over it with the mouse will reveal the stock fan measurements.

In the temperature graphs, you can see that the GPU core temperature on a fully warmed-up card oscillates rapidly within a range of about 3 °C.

With the default fan curve settings in FanControl, this causes the RPMs of the Noctua fans to fluctuate more than they do under the card’s own control. The changes are only in the low tens of RPM, so they’re not audible as obvious shifts in noise. You can smooth them out by adjusting the hysteresis settings.

Hysteresis is when a system’s output depends not only on the current input but also on its previous state. In fan control, it’s used to prevent RPMs from responding to every tiny temperature change. Speeds increase only after a more significant rise in temperature and decrease only after a more substantial drop. This stops constant RPM oscillations—and the noise fluctuations that come from changes in airflow.

This is easy to fine-tune: for example, you can disable symmetry between acceleration and deceleration, increase the threshold for reducing RPMs when temperatures drop, and extend the time over which the controller lowers speeds.

From the measurements, it’s clear that with a pair of Noctua fans, the noise reduction isn’t dramatic. It’s an improvement, but a drop of 2–3 dBA measured 20 cm from the card is unlikely to be worth the roughly 60 EUR investment in premium fans for most people.

It’s a different matter if one of the original fans fails. While it’s hard to break a blade on an impeller with a closed-rim design (even if you accidentally touch it while spinning), dust can still get in, fan startup can become unreliable, or bearing wear can make them noisier. In that case, replacement makes sense—and it’s good to know you can swap the originals for something better without much trouble.

The downside of replacing them with standard 25 mm-thick fans is that the card becomes significantly taller, and removing the shroud reduces structural rigidity. The PCB still provides some stiffness, but without the shroud braced against the I/O bracket, the card doesn’t resist sag as well. This makes it doubly important to support the far end of a heavy card or secure it to the case somehow.

There’s one more pitfall if you’re controlling the fans externally via software like FanControl—you must ensure that the control software runs and adjusts fan speed according to the GPU temperature. If you don’t, the GPU core will hit its thermal limit and start throttling performance and clocks significantly (don’t ask how I know—but for the TUF RTX 5070 Ti, that limit is around 88 °C).

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>
⠀

A few days ago, I tested how repasting affects the thermals and noise of Asus’s TUF GeForce RTX 5070 Ti.
