I’ll install a trio of 12 cm low-profile Noctua AF12x15 fans on the card. This reduces its height by a centimeter compared to the 25 mm solution, and unlike the setup with three 25 mm fans, this one is only a few millimeters taller than the stock TUF GeForce RTX 5070 Ti with its 11 mm-thick fans.

When you line up three 120 mm fans, they end up several centimeters longer than the card itself and can’t be mounted directly to the heatsink fins. I therefore designed and 3D-printed a frame to hold them. At over 360 mm in length, it doesn’t fit entirely on most 3D printers, so I split it into several pieces and joined them with plastic screws.

This is the first prototype—a proof of concept to see if the approach works. Ideally, I’d model the fans and card with heatsink in 3D and design a perfectly fitting shroud around them, but that would require much more time.

To speed up the assembly process, I skipped the metal threaded inserts Asus uses in the original shroud. I also avoided glue, instead designing and orienting the parts for faster printing and easier modification, and used screws for joining.

It’s not perfect—some screws could be a millimeter longer or shorter than what I had on hand. Most pieces are first prints, and with longer parts it’s hard to predict how much they’ll warp or what surface imperfections they’ll have. Some of this can be tuned in reprints; other flaws, given the nature of 3D printing, can only be addressed with sanding and filler. But clearly, this concept could form the basis for a modular system for mounting different fans on various graphics cards.

It’s still just a simple support frame, but it already looks more polished than the two fans awkwardly sitting in the middle of the heatsink fins in the previous experiment. Even so, this isn’t ideal for the originally 33 cm-long card—the fan rotors are a centimeter larger in diameter, so part of the third fan blows beyond the heatsink.

The frame mounts via standoffs in the original shroud screw holes. From an aesthetic standpoint, the biggest issue is probably the three thick cables from the three fans. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large power-hungry high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 RPM. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it keeps airflow more stable.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. If you ever need to replace them, there’s a wide range of 25 mm-thick models to choose from. In most cases, however, using them will make your card occupy four slots. The alternative is to stick with low-profile fans. We’ll test what happens when we swap Asus’s factory-installed 100 mm Axial-tech fans for three slimmer NF-A12x15 from Noctua—and also what happens if they don’t spin at all.

In the final batch of tests, we also compare the triple low-profile setup with and without the heatsink’s fin stack being enclosed by side baffles. The toughest challenge for these fans is forcing air through the dense fins in the first place; preventing side leakage doesn’t make much of a difference once that bottleneck remains.

You can tell just by placing your hand near the card while the fans are spinning—plenty of air escapes sideways from the blades without ever passing through the heatsink.

Shorter side skirts might be worth trying, but I doubt they’d make a significant difference.

Cyberpunk 2077 Benchmark, 4K

<div id='css-rollover-instance-33' class='css-rollover-container css-rollover-style-e74b35a1adc8fb82199f875ff7c7b303' style='width: 788px; The alternative is to stick with low-profile fans. We’ll test what happens when we swap Asus’s factory-installed 100 mm Axial-tech fans for three slimmer NF-A12x15 from Noctua—and also what happens if they don’t spin at all.

Here’s a quick wrap-up of the key findings in two graphs: at comparable GPU temperatures, fan speeds are roughly the same, but the fan noise level—and with it, the total noise level of the card—is noticeably higher.

On top of being louder at the same temperatures, the card with slimmer fans is also longer—36 cm in total—which in many compact cases will almost certainly collide with front-mounted intake fans.

Another drawback is the reduced operating RPM range compared to the original fans, which topped out at 3100 RPM. With the tested settings (around 73 °C on the GPU), the heatsink still has plenty of thermal headroom before hitting 88 °C—the point at which the card begins to aggressively throttle. But the fans, maxing out at around 1800 RPM, don’t have much room left to increase airflow further. From the standpoint of both noise and headroom, the two standard NF-A12x25s remain the clear winner.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>
⠀

Graphics card manufacturers usually fit low-profile fans.
