First and foremost, these components must fit inside the computer case; the case must support them. Some cases have better support for CPU coolers, for example radiators for liquid cooling concepts, others for memory storage like 2.5-inch SSDs or HDDs. It varies. This naturally also depends on dimensions. The larger the case, the more components can fit inside. This isn’t always true (it also depends on the specific internal layout of the case), but the potential is there.

Size-wise, modern cases are larger and smaller (SFF—Small Form Factor), typically supporting smaller motherboards, such as the Mini-ITX format. Larger cases can accommodate E-ATX motherboards (Extended ATX with greater width than standard ATX models). ATX cases (305 × 244 mm) and smaller ones (Micro ATX, Mini-ITX, or Mini-DTX) are often supported. The traditional division into Mini, Midi, and Big-towers now depends more on motherboard support than on the number of 5.25″ bays, as was the case in the past. These are now declining in favor of broader support for mounting liquid cooler radiators.

The computer case also protects the system components from potential electromagnetic radiation from surrounding appliances, provides grounding, for example, and from a mechanical standpoint, it also suppresses unwanted sliding on the surface (of a desk or the floor) with its feet. It also protects components from damage that could occur upon contact with unwanted objects.

For example, imagine a situation where a fan blade on one of the coolers breaks or the PCB of one of the installed components cracks. This can happen, incidentally, due to kinetic energy during computer transport. Typically when, upon impact, some components exert more force on the motherboard than the mounting systems can withstand. For example, a CPU cooler or graphics card.

In the first case mentioned above (loosening of the cooler mounting system) there is a risk of the cooler being ripped from the socket, which can irreparably damage not only the cooler but also the motherboard. Something similar can happen with a graphics card that is not held securely by the slot and the PCI Express bracket screws.

To counteract the greater leverage caused by larger components, cases contain various brackets. For example, a graphics card support bracket. This is located and attached either in a position below the graphics card, supporting it “horizontally” (meaning a bracket running the entire length of the graphics card, attached to the case at the PCIe bracket position) or “vertically”. The latter case involves rod-shaped brackets that are height-adjustable and placed between the rear of the case and the bottom of the PC case.

Please note: The article continues in the following chapters.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

This article covers the basic details of computer cases. There is more to computer cases and what lies behind how they “function.”

Main parts from the outside…

A PC case is usually shaped like a cuboid, so it has six sides—two side panels, a top panel, a bottom, and a front and rear panel. At the rear, there is typically (unless it’s a non-traditional case layout) the input-output connectivity with connectors for the motherboard or expansion cards (e.g., graphics card) and then an exhaust fan ensuring the removal of air heated by the components inside the case. This can also be in the top section, which usually also has a position for installing a liquid cooler.

A radiator with fans in the top position, besides cooling the processor (or possibly the graphics card), also serves as fans expelling heat from the case into the surrounding environment. Above these fans, there is often a dust filter that prevents unwanted debris from entering when the computer is turned off. Dust filters are also found at the front or bottom. These are usually behind the case fans (also called system fans) to allow the least amount of dust to enter along with the air. Such filters are also found in the bottom section under the power supply. This is to prevent its components from becoming clogged with layers of dust. Naturally, this reduces their cooling efficiency.

Important external parts also include connectors (typically routed to the front, top, or side panel) with control buttons (to turn the PC on or reset it) or indicator LEDs (indicating the powered-on status of the computer or internal storage activity).

… and from the inside

The connectors and buttons on the case are connected to the motherboard using various cables. The back side, besides pass-through holes for threading cables, is also equipped with cable ties or loops attached to the case’s metal structure, allowing these cables to be properly secured against unwanted movement.

This system (with cables on the right side) is also popular for a cleaner appearance. Especially at a time when many cases have tempered glass on the left side instead of a metal side panel, allowing a view inside. This concept (“for the best possible appearance”) is pushed even further by motherboards with connectors on the back of the PCB. The position of the case’s pass-through holes then reacts to this, as is the case with Fractal Design North XL cases with the RC suffix in the designation (Fractal Design North XL RC).

… including front panel connectors and buttons

As mentioned in the previous chapter, cables from the case are also connected to the motherboard. From USB ports and from control buttons or indicator LEDs: In the case of buttons and LEDs, we speak of the “front panel” connection, so this is often indicated in the case’s accompanying materials. Sometimes you have all connectors together, other times they are separate (Power_Switch or Reset), and this also applies to LEDs (Power LED or “HDD” LED), where extra attention must be paid to polarity. This matters because an LED is a semiconductor component and it only lights up when the “+” and “-” are connected correctly. These poles are indicated both on the connectors coming from the case and on the motherboard connector.

1x Fig. (connecting front panel LEDs. Will be added soon)

Then, the CPU cooler must also be installed in the case, whether it’s a tower design with a heatsink and fan above the CPU itself or a “liquid” variant. Its radiator is installed on the case structure, and only the block attaches to the CPU. This block is connected to the radiator via tubes through which liquid circulates to carry heat away from the CPU to the radiator. In the radiator, the liquid flows through channels between the fins, and fans are used to dissipate the heat into the surroundings. These are installed on the radiator itself. But we are digressing a bit from the case here; the important thing to know is that no matter what type of cooler you use, it’s always important what size (cooler) fits into the specific case. This information is provided in the case’s technical specifications, where you should look for the size of supported radiators or the maximum height for tower coolers. These two figures are authoritative for information on which coolers can be installed in the chosen case.

Something similar applies to the graphics card and the power supply. With these components, their size is also important in terms of whether they fit into the case. For graphics cards, the maximum length is often stated, but height is also important to avoid, for example, collisions between the graphics card and the bottom of the case. This can happen with larger graphics cards. For power supplies, you might not be able to install larger physical formats (e.g., ATX) and only smaller ones (e.g., SFX) will fit. Or, even if a larger format fits, the mounting holes for a smaller PSU format might not be available. These (mounting holes) are different, defined by a different spacing. The parameters often also state the maximum length for power supplies, which can vary even for standardized formats. For example, ATX format power supplies can have different lengths, e.g., 140 mm, but also 180 mm. It varies from unit to unit.

And finally, storage—2.5″/3.5″ drives. In the form of SSDs or HDDs. These are installed either in separate cages or in various locations on the metal, for example, in spaces behind the motherboard. These positions (for 2.5″/3.5″ drives) are gradually decreasing with the growing popularity of M.2 format SSDs. These install directly into a slot on the motherboard and practically do not require case support as such.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

This article covers the basic details of computer cases. And this is done precisely by these fans in the case. Some cases don’t come with fans, but often only so that you can purchase them separately for optimal cooling. There are also passive designs that rely on cooling without fans (heat is typically exhausted by natural convection through extensive perforations in the case panels or is transferred to the surface of the case panel by direct contact—conduction), but these are relatively rare situations. Cases like this do exist, but are rare, with models like those from Akasa.
