Individual components—whether the processor, graphics card, motherboard, or storage (SSD or HDD)—always need lower voltages than those present directly in the mains. Additionally, components require direct current rather than alternating current. The power supply has to provide all of this.

On the input side the PSU works with what it draws from the household electrical installation, and on the output side it delivers what the individual components need to operate correctly. Voltage is often further regulated at the component level. For example, the PSU supplies 12 V to a graphics card, but the GPU, memory and other parts of the graphics card still run on lower voltages. Those are converted by the switching regulator that the graphics card itself contains (or the motherboard, SSD, etc.). This leads to the fact that the power supply intended for a computer is a switching unit, which means the electrical voltage is delivered in pulses. And you probably understand that already better than we do.

For PC power supplies we distinguish different physical formats, the most used being ATX (the ATX form factor). In some computers, however, it can be placed elsewhere—at the top (rear) or even on the side, depending on the case layout, particularly in smaller enclosures. It varies.

In high-performance PC builds, the PSU is often located at the bottom, where its dedicated cooling can function more effectively and it is not heated by air from other components. The advantage of this design is that critical components (such as capacitors) heat up less under the same load and therefore achieve longer lifespans. This positioning can also make the PSU quieter in operation. In more economical configurations—typically office PCs or lower-power servers (which generate less heat)—the PSU is often mounted at the top. In those scenarios, placement is less critical, since the air passing through the PSU is cooler compared to high-performance systems.

One thing is installing the PSU into the case, and another is connecting it to the components it powers. This is done via cables that supply the motherboard (chipset, devices in PCI Express slots, or M.2 devices—typically SSDs), the processor, the graphics card, and peripherals outside of the motherboard. Examples include storage drives (SSDs or HDDs) connected via SATA cables (SATA interface) or U.2 (PCI Express interface), optical drives, or even card readers in rarer cases.

Below are photographs of the individual connectors commonly found on power supplies. The examples correspond to the Endorfy Supremo FM6 (1000 W). The latching mechanisms of these connectors are standardized across PSU models, with differences usually found in the hollows themselves (such as the contact surface or the materials used). The “main” connector is the 24-pin, which powers the motherboard, specifically the chipset and expansion slots. These 4-pin Molex connectors are typically used for older devices (such as optical drives or HDDs), as well as 4-pin Berg connectors. When the connector is properly seated, the resulting temperature at critical points is also minimized. This is important in order to rely on the rated specifications of the connectors, especially their maximum current load. In the case of 16-pin PCI Express connectors, the load can be quite high, since even GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards (with power consumption approaching 600 W) are powered through a single connector. At 12 V, this equals 50 A, which is substantial.

12V-2×6 connector for powering a graphics card

The 12V-2×6 connectors (ATX 3.1 and newer) differ from the older 12VHPWR connectors (ATX 3.0) in that the signal pins are shortened, so that current only flows into the card once the connector is fully seated. This serves as a safeguard against incomplete insertion, which would otherwise lead to higher than optimal heating. This, of course, applies to all connectors, but it is emphasized here because the 12V-2×6 can carry the highest currents. Consequently, heating is more intense. For this reason, these cables also use thicker conductors (typically AWG 16, i.e. 1.31 mm2), which further reduces resistance and heat.

Always make sure the connector is pushed in all the way.
