You\u2019ll find the same idea in the new generation of graphics cards from Asus and Gigabyte. Here, we look at how a fourth fan affects noise levels and temperatures on the Aorus GeForce RTX 5080 Master 16G. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Last week, we looked at the AORUS GeForce RTX 5080 Master 16G, a model at the top of Gigabyte&#8217;s air-cooled card offerings. What\u2019s premium about this card are not only its features, including a large four-slot cooler and an LCD display, but also its accessories. Among other things, you&#8217;ll find a special rubber frame and a fourth fan that can be attached to the top of the card.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-b04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-b04-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gigabyte refers to this solution as &#8220;Screen Cooling Plus.&#8221; We have encountered Screen Cooling technology on Gigabyte products for nearly twenty years. The term &#8220;screen&#8221; does not refer to a display but is used more in the sense of a grille or mesh. It originally appeared on passively cooled graphics cards, where the open-pass-through fin stack allowed the card to be cooled by air flowing inside the case.<\/p>\n<p>Modern high-performance cards can no longer be cooled passively due to their high power consumption. However, the shorter PCB of graphics cards allows for cooler designs where a large portion of the heatsink consists of an open-pass-through fin stack. Similar to CPU coolers, graphics card manufacturers began experimenting with mounting fans on both sides of the heatsink in a push-pull configuration. This increases both airflow and static pressure, which is intended to improve cooling efficiency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-26-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-26-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s article, we will focus on the practical impact that adding a second fan to the opposite side of the heatsink has on the card&#8217;s cooling. It won&#8217;t be entirely straightforward, because the fourth fan is not a standard part of the card but is supplied as an accessory. You will search in vain for a header on the card to plug it into, and the automatic speed regulation is similarly unresolved. Gigabyte avoided the problems associated with properly synchronizing and regulating two different fans in a stacked arrangement by leaving it up to the owner to figure out how to manage the fan speeds.<\/p>\n<p>A silicone frame is included in the accessories for mounting the fan. The fan is attached to this frame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-24-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-24-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll admit, I didn&#8217;t know where to start. Finding the optimum by trial and error would have been tedious, so I opted for measurements in larger steps, combining measurements across the entire operating speed range of the cooler&#8217;s fans with the full operating speed range of the supplemental fan.<\/p>\n<p>We will look at how different speed combinations affect the card&#8217;s overall noise levels and what influence this has on other operating characteristics. Before that, let&#8217;s just recap the card&#8217;s basic parameters, and then we&#8217;ll get started.<\/p>\n<h2>AORUS GeForce RTX 5080 MASTER 16G (GV-N5080AORUS M-16GD)<\/h2>\n<p>For this card, Gigabyte significantly increased the clock speed in the BIOS from the reference 2617\u00a0MHz to 2800 MHz. The power limit on both BIOS versions is set to the reference 360 W; it can be reduced by 31% to 250 W or increased by up to 25% to 450 W. The upper limit corresponds to the limit of the power adapter with three 8-pin connectors (but an additional up to 66 W on the +12V rail can be delivered to the card via the slot).<\/p>\n<p>The card features a dual BIOS with Silent and Performance modes. The core settings of the card do not differ between them; the GPU and memory clocks, as well as the default power limits, are the same. The difference lies in the cooling curve settings. In Silent mode, the fans run at lower speeds at the same temperatures than in Performance mode. The GPU can run at slightly higher clock speeds at lower temperatures because clock speeds are usually limited by the chip&#8217;s power draw, which is, to some extent, dependent on its temperature.<\/p>\n<p>GeForce cards typically have two headers reserved for fans, with separate regulation and RPM monitoring. The Gigabyte card has all three fan headers monitored and controlled independently in GPU-Z. You can see the list of sensors available for the tested card in the latest version of the application in the image below.<\/p>\n<p>I will measure the operational properties on a different setup than in standard card tests. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren\u2019t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you\u2019ll see with the same components inside a PC case.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fractal-design.com\/products\/cases\/meshify\/meshify-2\/black-solid\/\">Fractal Design Meshify 2<\/a><\/strong>, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large power-hungry high-end graphics cards. Although this setup is not whisper-quiet, it can keep even high-power GPUs sufficiently cool. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/en\/noctua-nh-d15-g2-meeting-all-our-expectations-review\/\">Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC<\/a><\/strong> in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.<\/p>\n<p>When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. It provides sufficient cores for virtually all current titles, maintains high clock speeds, and delivers strong single-core performance. While it may not lead the charts in every benchmark, it consistently ranks among the best overall. It has a single CCD fitted with 3D V-Cache, which all cores can access directly. Unlike higher-end models, it does not suffer from latency when switching between chiplets. In games, it can make more efficient use of its thermal envelope (TDP). In the BIOS, XMP\/EXPO High Bandwidth Support is enabled, Infinity Fabric Frequency and Dividers is manually set to 2000 MHz, and the UCLK DIV1 MODE divider is set to UCLK=MEMCLK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Storage: SSD Kingston Fury Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2<\/h2>\n<p>System and game data are stored on a fast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingston.com\/en\/ssd\/gaming\/kingston-fury-renegade-nvme-m2-ssd\">Kingston Fury Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2<\/a> SSD with 4TB capacity. It offers sequential read speeds of up to 7,300 MB\/s and write speeds of up to 7,000 MB\/s. The drive comes in two versions: one with a heatsink and one with a thin heat spreader. The front one that pushes air into the fin stack and a rear fan that pulls it through. This push\u2013pull setup improves the efficiency of heat removal from the heatsink and can lower temperatures by a few degrees. You\u2019ll find the same idea in the new generation of graphics cards from Asus and Gigabyte. Here, we look at how a fourth fan affects noise levels and temperatures on the Aorus GeForce RTX 5080 Master 16G. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The fourth fan on the cooler is another source of noise. The add-on fan bundled with the card is a different size and design, so you shouldn\u2019t expect it to run at the exact same RPMs or produce the same noise at a given speed. It also has a different operating RPM range from the three stock fans, and it isn\u2019t controlled by the card\u2014it has to be driven externally. For the test, we connected it to a Corsair Commander Pro controller.<\/p>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s look at how it affects the card&#8217;s noise level. I plotted the measured noise values into a 3D graph. This is for the Performance BIOS, which has a slightly higher minimum speed\u2014the lower limit is 1100 RPM.<\/p>\n<p>The left edge of the surface represents the card\u2019s noise level with the supplemental fan stopped. The front corner corresponds to 1100 RPM for the trio of \u201cHawk\u201d fans and 0 RPM for the add-on fan. Moving left from this corner, the card\u2019s fan speed increases up to approximately 3000 RPM.<\/p>\n<p>Along the other horizontal axis are the speeds of the fourth fan mounted on top of the card; I set these between 800 and 1670 RPM. The vertical axis shows the resulting noise level. When tuning fan control, you\u2019ll want to find a balance where the fourth fan isn\u2019t louder than the three on the cooler\u2014and vice versa. That way, you get higher airflow through the fin stack at a similar overall noise level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-4th-fan-noise.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-4th-fan-noise-tn.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"779\" height=\"779\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The graphs below show the measured operating characteristics. These are measurements across the entire speed range in both directions of the graph.<\/p>\n<p>The values were measured by first setting the speed of the fourth fan, which remained constant throughout the entire test run. The performance level will be set in steps to the following values:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>0 %: 0 rpm<\/li>\n<li>32 %: 800 rpm<\/li>\n<li>43 %: 1000 rpm<\/li>\n<li>65 %: 1320 rpm<\/li>\n<li>76 %: 1490 rpm<\/li>\n<li>98 %: 1760 rpm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For each setting of the fourth fan&#8217;s power level, I then ran measurements across the entire operating range of the trio of fans on the card. For temperature measurements, I switched to the Silent BIOS, which has a lower minimum speed limit at 30% and 1000 RPM. The measurement starts at 100% fan power (approx. 3000 RPM) and the speeds gradually decrease in 5% steps down to 30% power and 1000 RPM.<\/p>\n<p>Three test runs are executed for each setting. Then, logically, the fourth fan at 1500 RPM helps to bring the temperatures down. You\u2019ll find the same idea in the new generation of graphics cards from Asus and Gigabyte. Here, we look at how a fourth fan affects noise levels and temperatures on the Aorus GeForce RTX 5080 Master 16G. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read through the previous chapter, it&#8217;s probably clear to you that the fourth fan provides the most significant benefit when it runs at significantly higher speeds than the trio of fans on the cooler. It can then lower the chip temperature by several degrees. If the trio of Hawk fans is running at minimum speeds, the supplemental fan at its maximum 1800 RPM can lower the average chip temperature by about 6\u00a0\u00b0C. However, the noise level increases so much that it doesn&#8217;t make sense.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to achieve a noticeable benefit without the card becoming louder, you will have to stay near its minimum speeds\u2014in the range of around 800\u2013900 RPM. At these low speeds, you must also keep the trio of fans on the cooler running slowly. But this means you will have to manually tune the curves for both the supplemental fan and the trio of fans on the card. The result will be that, in the area of minimum fan performance, you will lower GPU temperatures by roughly 1\u20133 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>This fundamentally doesn&#8217;t differ from the experience we have with supplemental fans on CPU coolers\u2014with the difference that for CPU coolers under synthetic load, temperature differences are easier to measure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-28-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/aorus-geforce-rtx-5080-master-16g-gv-n5080aorus-m16gd-test-recenze-review-28-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, if you prefer higher fan speeds and lower GPU temperatures, the fourth fan\u2019s benefit becomes much smaller\u2014the temperature differences we measured in the mid-RPM range were often lost in normal fluctuations.
