Although the official debut is slated for December 10, we’ve already had an early look thanks to enhanced ray-traced reflection reconstruction shipped with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. In this preview, we assess the impact on image quality and benchmark performance on the Radeon RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 XT.

In June, with the launch of the Radeon RX 9060 XT, AMD announced a major update to its FSR4 technology, codenamed Project Redstone, for the second half of 2025. To achieve higher image quality and performance, it is supposed to utilize machine learning and AI acceleration units found in the latest Radeon RX 9000 series models.

AMD has already announced it will reveal details about FSR Redstone on December 10th. It is set to include multiple technologies. The first one we can get acquainted with in advance is Ray Regeneration, designed for higher-quality image reconstruction in effects utilizing ray tracing.

Ray Regeneration appears to be an alternative to Nvidia’s Ray Reconstruction technology. Setting aside quality and performance impact for now, the implementation in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 already reveals one crucial difference compared to Nvidia’s tech. Nvidia’s Ray Reconstruction is part of the DLSS technology bundle and works in conjunction with it, being tightly integrated into the DLSS pipeline, whereas AMD’s Ray Regeneration can be toggled independently of which upscaling method is chosen.

The first game to offer Ray Regeneration is Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Since the official unveiling of the FSR Redstone package is still pending, AMD hasn’t shared any details on how Ray Regeneration works or how it’s implemented in the game.

The only effect for which the game utilizes ray tracing is reflections. Surprisingly, ray tracing only functions in the multiplayer game mode. In the cooperative campaign, setting ray tracing for reflection quality has no effect, and the game only uses screen space reflections. Yet, it’s arguably in the campaign where you’d appreciate them more than in multiplayer, where enabling ray-traced reflections has a significant performance impact.

There are already numerous tests online conducted on Radeon RX 9070 XT cards. These often mention that performance doesn’t differ when using the default denoising algorithm versus Ray Regeneration. However, it depends more on the settings. On the less powerful Radeon RX 9060 XT, I achieved different results with most settings. Performance with Ray Regeneration was measurably lower than with the default denoising algorithm.

For the tests, we used the recently reviewed pair of Radeon RX 9060 XT Gaming OC Ice and RX 9070 XT Gaming OC Ice in the white Ice edition, which Gigabyte has newly added to its lineup.

Here, for example, are the results for the Radeon RX 9060 XT with global detail settings on Extreme at 1920 × 1080 resolution. After enabling Ray Regeneration, the average frame rate dropped to 49 fps. And with reflection quality on High, the result was even worse. With maximum reflection and denoising quality, we’re down to just 38.5 frames per second. That’s no longer comfortable for playing, and you can’t do without FSR 4.

In still images, Ray Regeneration’s benefits aren’t as obvious as the improvement to reflections when you’re moving. In the first screenshot, however, you can see the reflections don’t line up exactly with the structure that extends into the water.

RT Off (SSR High) | RT High + RT Denoiser Default | RT High + RT Ray Regeneration

In the next set, the camera is moving downward. Its big drawback is that when a reflection gets occluded and then revealed again, the affected areas lose detail and only snap back as more samples accumulate. Instead of a crisp reflection, the previously covered parts show a blurry patch. In motion, you can see this in the following video: in the bottom half with default Denoiser, once the movement stops, the reflection on the water surface gradually sharpens as more samples are gathered. With Ray Regeneration, a similar issue appears only in a thin strip around the weapon.

The footage is slowed from 120 to 30 fps, and the view is a 2× zoomed crop—mainly to mitigate YouTube’s compression.

Test build

Reviewers usually test the performance, thermals, and noise of graphics cards on open-air test benches. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large power-hungry high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 RPM. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. The system fans are set to a fixed speed to maintain constant airflow, making it more suitable for comparing graphics cards under similar conditions.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Our graphics card tests run on an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. When you compare them, make sure you zoom in integer pixel multiples so the image isn’t resampled. Resampling with smoothing introduces extra blur, and the picture won’t look as sharp as it does on your monitor at a 1:1 view. This can be caused not only by the browser, but also by an image viewer or non-standard display scaling. If you view the images in the comparison widget, remember that you should also have the page zoom in your browser set to 100%.

That’s why I added a 40×40-pixel “crosshair” to the image, which makes it easy to see whether the zoom is by integer multiples (sharp) or resampled (blurred). Performance is practically identical between native resolution, CAS sharpening, and FSR4 in native resolution.

In native resolution, the image without sharpening is blurry in motion and can’t be said to offer the highest quality. During movement, graininess around the edges of moving objects and artifacts are commonly visible. With CAS active, the image is sharper, but artifacts remain. With FSR 4 Native AA, the image is more stable, and graininess around object edges is better filtered.

As mentioned in the introduction, AMD hasn’t shared much about Ray Regeneration yet. Therefore, we must rely on what can be observed.

Reflections are probably the most suitable effect for ray tracing; they best showcase the quality difference compared to simpler methods of mimicking the behavior of reflective materials. Unfortunately, they are also the most computationally demanding, and this is very apparent in Call of Duty’s performance impact.

Another issue is that the introduction of another set of technologies complicates performance and image quality comparisons. On GeForce cards, ray-traced reflections with Ray Reconstruction are apparently calculated with a higher sample count and offer higher quality. The quality of anti-aliasing, image stability, and the quality of interpolated frames also differ. So, even with similar settings, you won’t be comparing images of the same quality.

It’s also unfortunate that active ray tracing has a significant performance impact even in locations where there aren’t many reflections visible. The following set of images shows reflection settings from worst to best on one of the maps. While some shiny objects in shadows glow more than they should without active ray tracing, the differences aren’t as immediately obvious as the difference in frame rates, which on the RX 9060 XT drop from an average of 100 fps to around 30 fps with higher reflection quality.

SSR off | SSR high | RT Low + RT Denoiser Default

RT Refl.
