It introduces the individual graphics chips Nvidia is using in the new cards, the new GDDR7 memory type, and also covers changes in cache memory, GPU compute units, updates to shaders and tensor cores, as well as improved compute units for ray tracing. The new generation of GeForce also brings support for new standards such as DisplayPort 2.1b and PCI Express 5.0.

With the new generation of cards, DLSS capabilities are evolving as well. It now supports Multi Frame Generation, which allows the generation of up to three intermediate frames, and introduces Nvidia Reflex 2, the second generation of its latency-reduction technology. This includes Frame Warp, which adjusts object and camera motion in rendered frames based on the player’s most recent input device movement data received just before the already rendered frame is displayed. A more detailed explanation can be found in the aforementioned article.

The GeForce RTX 5060, along with the RTX 5050, are the last models Nvidia has brought to market. We’ve already covered the specs and pricing in the news article GeForce RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti are here: Specs, pricing, availability. The cards hit retail a few weeks later, with the GeForce RTX 5060 going on sale at the end of May.

To recap, the GeForce RTX 5060 features the second-smallest chip based on the Blackwell architecture, designated GB206. It has a die size of 181 mm² and houses 21 billion transistors.

The same chip is used in the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, where the GPU includes 4608 stream processors, 144 texture mapping units, and 48 ROPs, alongside 36 RT cores and 144 tensor cores. The base clock speed of the GPU is 2407 MHz, with a boost clock of 2572 MHz and a power limit set at 180 W. It comes in both 8 GB and 16 GB GDDR7 memory variants, connected via a 128-bit memory bus. The memory speed is 28 Gb/s, yielding a total bandwidth of 448.0 GB/s.

The GeForce RTX 5060 retains the same number of ROPs, but most of the computational units are cut down by roughly one-sixth. The GPU has 3840 stream processors, 120 TMUs, and 30 RT cores. Clock speeds are slightly lower—base clock is 2280 MHz, boost clock is 2497 MHz. Memory operates over a 128-bit bus at 28 Gb/s, matching the 5060 Ti in bandwidth. Based on specs alone, the performance drop from the 8 GB 5060 Ti should be under 17%. Compared to the 16 GB version, the difference will be more pronounced in memory-intensive games.

The MSRP for basic RTX 5060 models in Europe starts at 329 EUR (VAT included).

Testing the MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Ventus 2x OC, 8 GB (912-V537-002)

The MSI RTX 5060 Ventus 2X is the cheapest RTX 5060 model in MSI’s lineup. But with 8 GB of memory, compromises are necessary in the most demanding games.

Test build

Reviewers usually test the performance, thermals, and noise of graphics cards on open-air test benches. In such a setup, the system has virtually unlimited access to cool ambient air from the surroundings, and the warm air from the graphics card is quickly expelled into the open air. Inside a case, however, the air volume is much smaller. Once components are installed, it becomes necessary to find a balance, tuning the cooling system so that system fans aren’t too noisy, while still ensuring sufficient airflow through the case. Powerful CPUs and GPUs produce a lot of heat, raising the temperature inside the case, and component temperatures are usually higher than under ideal open-bench conditions. This is why results for clocks, temperatures, and noise in such test setups tend to look better than what you’ll see with the same components inside a PC case.

That’s why graphics cards are tested inside a PC case. For this purpose I chose the Fractal Design Meshify 2, featuring one of the most common case layouts and cooling designs. Unlike expensive, oversized cases, its size and price make it suitable for lower- and mid-range GPUs, while still being able to fit and cool even large power-hungry high-end graphics cards. In this setup, using a case with all fan mounts populated lets us compare cards under identical conditions.

All system fans are set to around 780 RPM. I opted instead for a top-of-the-line air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC in an offset mounting configuration, for two main reasons. First, it offers greater reliability and more predictable long-term cooling performance compared to liquid coolers. Second, it has a smaller impact on case airflow than an AIO.

When CPU load increases, speeding up the radiator fans on an AIO cooler can significantly change the airflow inside the case. With an air cooler, higher CPU fan speeds have much less impact on case airflow. In terms of noise, it lags slightly behind the average due to overly high fan speeds, but the cooler has sufficient headroom for manual fan speed reduction. Performance is adequate, but with 8 GB of memory, compromises are necessary in the most demanding games.

Final thoughts

I devoted a significant portion of the conclusion of the RTX 5060 launch review to the pitfalls of 8 GB cards and how future-proof they are. With 8 GB of memory, you obviously won’t be able to run everything at maximum details even in less demanding games, not even at lower resolutions. That still doesn’t mean such games can’t be configured in a way that allows good playability on the RTX 5060 while maintaining higher visual quality.

At the most demanding settings, where memory capacity becomes a limiting factor, the RTX 5060 often also lacks sufficient GPU performance. You will therefore still need to enable DLSS or reduce detail settings not only because of memory limitations, but also due to low frame rates resulting from the card’s lower-tier performance.

If graphics cards start becoming more expensive specifically due to a significant rise in memory prices, it is likely that the price-to-performance ratio of higher-capacity models will worsen, making the purchase of 8 GB cards a sensible alternative again—accepting reduced texture quality or other detail settings in exchange for saving some money.

A downside is performance compared to competing RX 9060 XT cards with 8 GB of memory—they start at similar prices but are generally more powerful. The GeForce RTX 5060 only takes the lead with DLSS 4 enabled and two- or three-frame generation. However, this is a technology that works well only if you already have sufficiently high base frame rates, allowing it to improve smoothness on high-refresh-rate monitors. You cannot rely on it to provide comfortable gameplay at around 70 fps. With a weaker GPU, the problem is the lack of a sufficiently fast base frame rate from which to interpolate.

If you don’t want to pay extra

Cards like the GeForce RTX 5060 Ventus 2X are primarily aimed at users who place the greatest emphasis on price. Their characteristics reflect this. You can’t expect from them what you would from cards that cost a thousand more. Manufacturers mainly save on heatsink size, which then translates into higher noise levels.

In the case of the RTX 5060 Ventus, the higher noise level is largely due to the automatic fan control settings—if the manufacturer had shifted the temperature-to-fan-speed curve slightly lower, the card could have been quieter. It’s not strictly necessary for the GPU to sit at around 70–73 °C; 76 °C would have been perfectly fine, allowing quieter cooling while still leaving ample thermal headroom before hitting temperature limits.

The overall impression could therefore have been slightly better if MSI had tuned the cooling control more carefully. But this is a common weakness of all entry-level models—manufacturers don’t emphasize operating characteristics as much as they do with more expensive models, because otherwise there would be less reason to pay extra for something better.

The card itself, however, is not bad—performance is sufficient for comfortable 1080p gaming with ray tracing, except perhaps for a few particularly problematic titles where, due to the 8 GB memory limit, you can’t expect a combination of maximum texture quality, ray tracing, and frame generation. In the remaining cases, enabling DLSS will be sufficient at worst. Power consumption is excellent, and noise levels are slightly below average. This certainly isn’t a silent cooler, but in budget systems it won’t stand out significantly compared to other components, and noise can still be reduced by lowering fan speeds.

The lower price positively impacts the price-to-performance ratio, which is noticeably better than that of better-equipped RTX 5060 models. So if your key factor is how much you pay for a given level of performance, and for some reason you don’t want the competing RX 9060 XT, you don’t need to worry about purchasing the RTX 5060 Ventus 2X OC.

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Ventus 2x OC, 8 GB (912-V537-002)

+ Performance sufficient for 1080p gaming, with DLSS also suitable for 1440p
+ The cooler has headroom both for noise reduction and lower temperatures
+ Price, placing it among the cheapest RTX 5060 models
+ Better price-to-performance ratio than premium models
+ Lower power consumption compared to higher-performance models

− Only 8 GB of memory
– Reference power limit that cannot be increased for overclocking
− Worse price-to-performance ratio than the 8 GB RX 9060 XT
− On older systems, you may lose a few percent of performance due to the PCIe ×8 interface

Approximate retail price incl.
