The heat generated by the processor during operation is typically transferred into the heatsink fins, from which it is dissipated into the surrounding environment by a fan. That is the case for an “active” cooler. With passive solutions, heat is radiated from the heatsink fins. To some extent, heat is also removed by convection, because PC cases (their operation is explained in this article) have their own fans that create airflow (and thus air circulation through the case), but the fundamental objective is always to transfer the processor’s heat through the cooler into the surrounding environment.

DeepCool AK700 Digital NYX CPU cooler

And while we are discussing concepts such as heat transfer by convection and thermal radiation, we can add another one: “thermal conduction.” This occurs at the processor-cooler interface, where their heat spreaders (connected by thermal paste or a thermal pad) are in physical contact.

The most important characteristic of a cooler is the surface area of its fins, into which heat is transferred. In addition to varying fin thicknesses, different surface finishes are also used. A thin metal coating can help prevent oxidation (of the aluminum used), while aesthetic considerations may also come into play, with the goal of achieving a finish different from the natural appearance. There is also an effort to increase this surface area while keeping the cooler’s overall dimensions unchanged, so that its height, width, and depth remain compatible with as many surrounding components as possible. This is achieved through various surface structures and articulations.

The photo below shows a close-up of a fin with embossed protrusions that increase its surface area compared to a smooth fin of comparable dimensions. This increases the cooler’s contact with the flowing air, which can improve cooling performance—which is the objective.

Fin structure of the Endorfy Spartan 5 (Max) cooler

Please note: The article continues in the following chapters.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

The purpose of a CPU cooler is to transfer enough heat away from the processor so that it can operate within its optimal parameters, for example clock speeds. Such a cooler is usually simpler in design and intended to provide relatively modest cooling performance. However, it is sufficient for the processor it is paired with. More precisely, it is capable of cooling the processor well enough for it to achieve its baseline specifications. These usually correspond to the values associated with the TDP, meaning they do not represent the maximum performance the processor is capable of delivering. The processor will still function, although the system may operate with higher noise levels or lower performance. These coolers included with processors are often referred to as “boxed” coolers.

More demanding users who require not only high cooling performance but also lower noise levels often opt for aftermarket coolers. Their construction is usually more sophisticated. Besides being larger, they also employ more advanced technologies such as heat pipes. The purpose of these tubes is to distribute heat more evenly throughout the heatsink fin stack while also rapidly transferring heat away from the processor into the cooler. The heat pipes pass through the fin stack at various locations. In the simplest manner, a heat pipe can be imagined as a hermetically sealed tube containing a liquid with a relatively low boiling point. The boiling point is chosen so that the liquid vaporizes even at relatively low temperatures (typically corresponding to the processor’s power consumption under light load). Even in such situations, the cooler already performs its function, although the heat pipe’s capacity is only partially utilized and still has considerable thermal headroom.

Left to right: PCCooler RZ820 CPU cooler, BeQuiet! In every case, it involves attaching the cooler to the motherboard. The processor being cooled sits between the motherboard and the cooler. One installation method uses so-called “push pins.” These plastic pins pass through the mounting holes around the processor socket, expand at the end, and thereby secure themselves to the motherboard. This technique is used primarily for lightweight coolers, where the mounting system is more likely to withstand higher mechanical stress—for example, when a computer is being transported and subjected to impacts.

Push-pin used with the Intel Laminar RM1 cooler

Then there are coolers—primarily for AMD platforms—that use the retention brackets located on either side of the socket. These are the plastic brackets that come preinstalled on every motherboard. The cooler’s metal retention clip hooks onto them, and once the mechanism that applies pressure to the processor is tightened, the installation is complete. Naturally, thermal paste must first be applied to the base of the cooler. In some cases it is pre-applied, while in others you must apply it yourself by squeezing it from the supplied tube. What is the proper way? We tested various application techniques and different amounts, so you can judge the results for yourself.

Many coolers use a component called a “backplate.” Structurally, it is a cross-shaped bracket installed on the back of the motherboard. It has threads in its corners which pass through the motherboard’s mounting holes. From there, the installation procedure depends on the specific cooler you own. The backplate is typically secured using standoffs, which also determine the spacing and the required mounting pressure applied to the processor. Mounting brackets are then attached to these standoffs, and finally the cooler itself is fastened to the brackets. Before that, of course, thermal paste must be applied.

Bracket used to mount the cooler (DeepCool LP360) to the motherboard

Some coolers do not use standoffs, and instead the cooler itself (typically the water block of a liquid cooler) is attached directly to the backplate, for example using springs. These springs ensure even mounting pressure. And since we are discussing mounting pressure, it is worth noting that the greater the mounting pressure, the better the heat transfer (and ultimately cooling performance) can be. It is similar to touching a radiator lightly with your finger versus pressing firmly against it. Greater pressure increases the contact area here as well. However, excessive pressure carries the risk of bending or even permanently damaging the processor or motherboard, typically by cracking or breaking something, so moderation is essential. Cooler manufacturers—and particularly the designers of their mounting systems—generally strive to ensure that everything is set up in an optimal way.

As the need to dissipate larger amounts of heat increases—typically with higher-performance processors—CPU cooler manufacturers strive to improve thermal transfer by bringing the part of the cooler base with the highest thermal conductivity closer to the areas of the processor that generate the most heat. Various techniques are used to achieve this. In some cases, it’s as simple as introducing a slight local convexity to the base so that higher mechanical pressure—and therefore greater contact pressure—is applied exactly where it’s needed most.

Please note: The article continues in the following chapter.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

The purpose of a CPU cooler is to transfer enough heat away from the processor so that it can operate within its optimal parameters, for example clock speeds. Yes, everything usually revolves around speed, but that is also associated with factors such as power consumption.

How it works (heat dissipation)

The basic principle is that heat is transferred from the processor into the cooler. That heat is then dissipated into the surrounding environment—either “actively” (by a fan on the radiator/heatsink) or “passively” (naturally). This is a very simplified explanation, but it is sufficient for now. Although in practice you will encounter terms such as “liquid cooler” and “air cooler,” air plays an important role in both cases.

The heat transferred into the radiator must then be removed from the radiator (or the heatsink—the terms are essentially interchangeable) and released into the surrounding environment, for example by a fan. The difference lies in the transfer medium used. While liquid coolers (“water coolers”) use coolant to transport heat through tubes to the radiator, “air” coolers (tower coolers) use heat pipes, which have already been discussed.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-104045 size-large" src="https://www.hwcooling.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/silentiumpc-spartan-5-max_00-1024x683.jpg" alt="Base of the Endorfy Spartan Max cooler. In liquid coolers, a network of channels inside the radiator is used, through which the coolant flows, transferring the heat it carries into the radiator fins. In the end, however, it is always the fan that removes the absorbed heat into the surrounding environment—unless it is a purely passive cooler that does not use any fans.

A fan blade, behind which cooler fins are visible

Expand the content in the comments: This article certainly does not cover everything you consider important.
