GB202 Chip to be Exclusively for AI Cards

The claims that the high-end Blackwell architecture card will go end of life are now apparently supported by official sources. Firstly, one of the large American hardware and electronics retailers, Micro Center. This week, its stores and website began listing the GeForce RTX 5090 with a status indicating that the card is not carried by the chain at all. This is not a note indicating a sellout, which is usually reported as “Out of stock,” whereas here the wording “Not Carried” was used.

Shortly before that, Micro Center also began requiring buyers of this model to sign a document committing to not re-export the card from the US, and to present personal identification. This means that by pulling the card from its stores, the company could in theory be responding not to a production halt, but to possible legal risks arising from customers violating sanctions on GPU shipments to China, which it wanted to avoid. It is an open question whether cases of RTX 5090 smuggling might also be behind Nvidia’s decision, but then it would probably have to cancel the RTX Pro 6000 graphics cards with the same chip as well, which the company, on the contrary, wants to keep producing, and actually increase the volumes thanks to the freeing up of GB202 chips that until now went into gaming models.

Meanwhile, a similar step has come from Nvidia itself. In some regions (this does not currently concern us), the company sells GeForce graphics cards directly on its own website, where, for example, cards in its own Founders Edition design could be ordered. The company has now removed the GeForce RTX 5090 from this e-shop entirely. This should not indicate temporary unavailability, as in such cases cards generally remained in the listing, merely with a note that they were out of stock. In other words, this is likely to be an evidence that the reports of the end of production of this graphics card for gamers are true.

GeForce RTX 5090 is no longer available in Nvidia’s official store

RTX 5080 24GB Will Be Available Instead of the RTX 5090

In the previous report, we stated that Nvidia is reportedly planning to move the GeForce RTX 5080 24GB or RTX 5080 Super to the top position in its lineup of graphics cards for gamers. This card would apparently have the same GB203 chip as the currently sold RTX 5080, but with 24GB of GDDR7 memory instead of just 16GB. Leakers now say that this card could go on sale in the first quarter of 2027. The CES 2027 trade show will take place in January, and it might possibly be announced right there (though this is our speculation).

This reshuffling or reduction of the gaming graphics lineup is something fairly unprecedented so far. There is a wide chasm between the GeForce RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080, and indeed between the chips the two cards use, probably one of the largest Nvidia has ever had between its number one and number two contenders. The GeForce RTX 5090 offers 170 SM units (21,760 shaders) and a 512-bit memory bus with 32 GB of GDDR7 memory (bandwidth of 1,792 GB/s).

The GeForce RTX 5080 has just 84 SM blocks / 10,752 shaders (not even half of RTX 5090) and a half-width 256-bit GDDR7 memory bus, with a bandwidth of 960 GB/s and a capacity that is also half, at 16 GB. The GB203 chip is in fact even less than half of the GB202 chip, which in the GeForce RTX 5090 still had 22 compute units disabled. Roughly speaking, though, the GeForce RTX 5080 is only half of the GPU that the RTX 5090 is.

Read more: GeForce RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 in detail

In games, the GeForce RTX 5090 usually does not scale anywhere near ideally and is thus nowhere near twice as fast. This is also because its TDP is only about half as high as that of the RTX 5080. According to tests, Nvidia’s drivers also have higher per-frame CPU overhead than Radeon graphics cards, so at higher frame rates they require a lot of CPU performance, which probably also contributes to the RTX 5090’s relatively weaker performance scaling in a number of games.

Even so, there is a big gap between the two cards, so ending sales of the GeForce RTX 5090 will considerably reduce the performance that gamers can buy. The GeForce RTX 5080 should also effectively be slower than the GeForce RTX 4090 from the previous generation. The question, though, is how much that actually matters. GeForce RTX 5090 prices have already exceeded double its original recommended price ($1,999). Hardly any gamer, apart from the richest individuals would buy such a graphics card for gaming, so in practice, its discontinuation will probably affect only those who bought these cards for companies to accelerate AI.

Sources: VideoCardz (1, 2, 3, 4)

English translation and edit by Jozef Dudáš

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block;background-color:transparent"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8150419924824893"
     data-ad-slot="6522017574"
     data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

According to recent leaks, Nvidia is discontinuing the GeForce RTX 5090 and redirecting the GB202 chips to the production of AI accelerators for workstations and servers.
