Not only because of an unprecedented performance, but also thanks to a more reasonable consumption. Let\u2019s take a look at the impact of different CPU settings on performance and functional features. These tests revealed also how economical can a\u00a0configuration be with a\u00a0more efficient cooling. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How we were testing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The board of the test configuration was MSI X299 Gaming M7 ACK. It should not limit the processor with its 12 phases and IR3555M MOSFETs. The memory we used was Flare X in XMP mode (3200 MHz\/CL14), and the processor cooler was Noctua NH-D15. One of the modes was full speed (2 \u00d7 approx. 1490 rpm), and to simulate less efficient coolers, we also made every test after a slowdown to 7 volts, which represent approximately 945 rpm.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to CPU temperatures, MOS and VR sensors showed us some interesting results too. However, they are not located in the places with the greatest heat losses of the circuit. Although these are the highest temperatures in the tests, the surface temperature of the MOSFET casing is also high without the VRM heatsink. This might mean that the sensors are probably near a higher heat intensity but there is no (effective) transfer of heat to the heatsink. System cooling was extremely important. Without it, power supply components reached significantly higher temperatures. It was limiting us during the first attempts of proper setting, VRM temperatures were too high. All adjustments and settings were done with a\u00a0natural air flow.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal was to find the most economical but stable settings. We began by comparing the factory settings of the processor and motherboard with manual voltage settings. With OC, we started at 4.2 GHz and then increased the multiplier traditionally. The chosen stress test was the extreme of extremes, FFT was set to constant 128K in Prime95. This load can make the processor \u201csweat\u201c even more than conventional presets or IntelBurnTest with AVX Linpack which does not get along with 18 cores very well. These tests lasted for 900 seconds, and we considered the settings to be stable if none of the cores were turned off during the process (this usually does not mean a crash of the system, but it does indicate that there is something wrong).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/undervolting-and-overclocking-of-ci9-7980xe-with-nh-d15-04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5030\" src=\"http:\/\/hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/undervolting-and-overclocking-of-ci9-7980xe-with-nh-d15-04.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/undervolting-and-overclocking-of-ci9-7980xe-with-nh-d15-04.png 793w, https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/undervolting-and-overclocking-of-ci9-7980xe-with-nh-d15-04-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hwcooling.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/undervolting-and-overclocking-of-ci9-7980xe-with-nh-d15-04-768x374.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We subtracted the heating of the heatsink and the max. \u201cvisible\u201c temperature in the area around the power supply circuit with our thermal imager after 15 minutes. From the 11th to the 14th minute, we logged the consumption of the configuration with power meter RS-232 Extech. However, overheating of the power supply circuit can be a\u00a0limit with cheaper boards. It was more than 100 \u00b0C even in our case. CPU temperatures were quite still optimistic though. With a reduced air flow of the cooler fan (and a total power consumption of 390 W), it was less than 80 \u00b0C. It may seem like there is still some reserve, but perhaps only for worse chips. 4.5 GHz already require a big jump in power consumption, giving the twin-tower from Noctua no chance. Even with 1.2 V (and consumption over 440 W), the processor was not stable and temperatures were above 100 \u00b0C. This is a challenge for a\u00a0liquid cooler with a full cover block. And trying to \u201cinvent\u201c some homemade cooling for VRM is not a very elegant solution.<\/p>\n<p>With the increase of consumption, we started to be concerned about the overheating of cables. Well, the outer insulation reached 34.7 \u00b0C (with 370 W), which is rather safe (1.291mm cable, 16 AWG). Also in the place under the socket with a higher CPU, where is more intense heating and lower airflow. For comparison, -150 W means &#8211; 6 \u00b0C. After disconnecting the 4-pin, the temperature rose by 1.5 \u00b0C, which is also no tragedy. So, even a cheaper power supply should not be any risk. Optimally tuned base clock for a maximum efficiency (ie all cores at 3.4 GHz with boost) was more economical by 135 W, a drop of almost 35 percent. But be careful, without manual tuning, the processor can demand even 100 watts more. The MSI board regulates the power with a\u00a0big reserve, making the playing with Vcore as interesting as overclocking. You can get to the point when the heatsink is cool enough to touch.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the last test of Core i9-7980XE. We have a\u00a0liquid cooler from EKWB on the way.
