Ryzen 7 5800X3D won't be a one-time experiment, but AM5 will only get V-Cache some time later
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD’s new processor aimed specifically at gaming is now on sale. Based on the reviews, it seems that the 96MB 3D V-Cache it touts really helps in games significantly. This is the final CPU on the AM4 platform, still with the Zen 3 architecture, so many people are probably torn, eyeing Zen 4 instead. For those, there’s good news: Zen 4 with 3D V-Cache is also in the works, but it will take tame to arrive.
Not long ago, we got news from the leaker going by the handle Greymon55 that Ryzen 7000 production should now be starting on the assembly line (this process entails TSMC silicon being packaged on the substrate and the whole thing being tested and finalised) – which could allow for a September release. The same leaker has now provided more information apparently coming from the same sources, now in turn regarding future processors with 3D V-Cache for.
According to Greymon55, AMD CPUs with 3D V-Cache, or rather their compute dies with 3D V-Cache, are produced on a single packaging line, whose activity therefore determines when they can reach the market. And according to his source, the same line will also produce the next generation, Zen 4 compute dies with 3D V-Cache. This is a confirmation that AMD is also preparing this technology for the next generation of CPUs as well.
So according to Greymon55, the Ryzen 7000 “X3D” is also planned to come with this 3D V-Cache for the AM5 platform. Such a model could be particularly attractive to gamers as it will combine the benefits of the large L3 Cache seen in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with the higher single-core performance and DDR5 memory support. Fortunately, Ryzen 7 5800X3D will not repeat the story of Intel Core i7-5775C (Broadwell generation, LGA 1150) with 128MB eDRAM, which was also very interesting for gamers, but was left with no successor once Skylake processors took over.
But the catch is that single packaging line utilised by AMD. The Zen4 with 3D V-Cache is also supposed to be produced on that same line, and according to Greymon55, the plan is to switch the entire production line over to it at some point, but that means that these products will only be able to go into production run when the assembly of Zen3 with 3D V-Cache is phased out. But that probably won’t be any time soon, as AMD probably plans to produce quite a lot of batches of the server 3D V-Cache processors (Epyc 7003X) first.
For this reason, it looks like Zen 4 with 3D Cache will only be released significantly later than the ordinary models and this X3D model won’t be available at the time when Ryzen 7000 is released. Probably, according to Greymon55, it will be only able to come out in 2023. It’s not impossible that they could appear a full year after the current Ryzen 7 5800X3D release.
