Extreme TDPs for GPUs? Nvidia Hopper is allegedly above 1000W

It seems that after the power consumption increase brought by Nvidia’s latest GPU (GeForce RTX 3000) was not the last time we’ll see this happening. We had news of 450W GeForce cards and even 550W future SKUs coming, but the crowning jewel will be the high-performance server GPU codenamed Hopper. Nvidia is supposedly planning a four-digit consumption exceeding 1000 W, requiring a completely new power supply solution. Read more “Extreme TDPs for GPUs? Nvidia Hopper is allegedly above 1000W” »

Specs of Intel Alder Lake 125W ‘K’ processors leak: clock rate, PL2

Last week we’ve had reports of the big.LITTLE Intel Alder Lake processors reaching surprising performance: with just 8 “big” cores out of the total 16, they are said to surpass the 32-threaded Zen 3 in Cinebench R20. Now we the specs of all three 125W unlocked models, with clocks and power draw in boost, aka PL2. Looks like 10nm process will finally lower the power consumption compared to the 14nm CPUs—but not by much. Read more “Specs of Intel Alder Lake 125W ‘K’ processors leak: clock rate, PL2” »

Intel Alder Lake ES leaked: 4.6 GHz clock, high power draw

Interesting info has shown up about the upcoming Intel Alder Lake CPUs, the first big.LITTLE desktop CPUs. Igor’sLAB has covered a sample called Core-1800 with 16 cores and 24 threads. The ES already shows promising clock speed and boost values for different active core counts. Also notable is the power draw. Intel doesn’t seem to be about to return to more power-efficient CPUs despite the 10nm process, PL2 is still over 200 W. Read more “Intel Alder Lake ES leaked: 4.6 GHz clock, high power draw” »

Undervolting and overclocking of Ci9-7980XE with NH-D15

Skylake-X is a significantly more flexible generation of high-end processors than the previous one. Not only because of an unprecedented performance, but also thanks to a more reasonable consumption. Let’s take a look at the impact of different CPU settings on performance and functional features. These tests revealed also how economical can a configuration be with a more efficient cooling. With X299, temperatures and cooling will be really important

During the recent years, TDP of processors have been declining, 65 W chips have become mainstream, and the things we write about have become a little less important. But this week’s reveal of extreme Intel processors indicates that the competition is now pushing the manufacturers back to straining the hardware to the edge and making things probably much more hot than cold.
