What does Axagon mean by a “gaming” SSD enclosure? We’ll explore this in the following review, where we’ll take a closer look at the EEM2-GAM. This is an enclosure designed for NVMe SSDs in the M.2 format utilizing a 10 Gbps USB interface (3.2 gen. 2). Additionally, it features a rubber protector, a metal body, two included cables, and ARGB LED elements. These are integrated into the design with a light guide indicating activity.
Evaluation
The Axagon EEM2-GAM enclosure passed our tests smoothly – without any performance shortcomings. The speed results match the standard advertised by the enclosure – USB 3.2 gen. 2. This can already be considered a fairly fast interface, and copying larger files will exceed 1 Gb/s, whether for reading or writing. Whether this performance remains stable over time or only for a certain period will depend on the SSD used.
The surface temperature of the enclosure stays below 40 °C even at its hottest point. Power consumption is up to 6.5 W, and around 3.6 W when idle. These values can be considered optimal—neither excessively high nor unusually low… simply average. And that’s a good rating. Minor differences in power consumption (due to factors like the indicator LED) are negligible even for laptop users. Battery life won’t be significantly affected by the SSD enclosure.
Overall, the Axagon EEM2-GAM deserves praise. This includes its durable construction, which will withstand accidental drops well. While the SSD itself is hard to damage, the protective sleeve on the enclosure also prevents unwanted scratches on the metal body. The enclosure is exceptionally robust, and the solid unlocking mechanism gives it a truly massive feel. For easier portability, the enclosure can be hung, for example, on a keychain via the loop on the shorter side.
The inclusion of two cables is also noteworthy, as each caters to different connection options. While one cable has USB-C connectors on both ends, the other allows the enclosure to be connected via USB-A.
Users who prioritize aesthetics may be interested in the ARGB indicator LED or the PCB-themed surface design. The price is well set considering everything the Axagon EEM2-GAM offers.
