According to earlier leaks, AMD was preparing a refresh of its Ryzen 9000 desktop lineup, something motherboard BIOS updates had hinted at for months. Among the expected additions were the affordable Ryzen 7 9700F and Ryzen 5 9500F SKUs without integrated graphics—a feature present on all other models. AMD has now made one of them official: the Ryzen 5 9500F, a CPU that could become the sweet spot for budget gaming PCs.
Right now, AMD’s most affordable Zen 5 desktop processor is the six-core Ryzen 5 9600X (the non-X 9600, released in winter, is rarely seen in Europe). After recent discounts, it sells for around 200 EUR. A GPU-less model, however, could cut that price further, much like the Ryzen 5 7500F once did. That processor, based on Zen 4, held its place for a long time as perhaps the most attractive entry-level choice for the AM5 platform at roughly 150 EUR. The new 9500F promises to offer a similar deal, but this time with newer cores and stronger performance—no wonder it’s been so eagerly anticipated.
AMD Ryzen 5 9500F
AMD officially unveiled the Ryzen 5 9500F at an event in China, where it has already appeared in retail listings alongside presentation slides showing specifications and performance. The CPU brings six Zen 5 cores with a 3.8 GHz base clock, 100 MHz lower than the 9600X. It retains the full L3 cache, full PCI Express 5.0 support, and DDR5-5600 memory compatibility (and higher with XMP or EXPO profiles). In other words, there are no deficiencies that could hamper gaming performance as the chip is built on the same CPU chiplets as the higher-end Ryzen 9000 models. Its TDP is set at 65 W.

Where the Ryzen 5 9500F does differ is in its maximum boost clock: it reaches only 5.0 GHz versus 5.4 GHz on the 9600X. That translates into roughly 7% lower single-threaded performance. Enthusiasts may claw back some of that gap with overclocking, since, like the rest of the Ryzen 9000 family, this chip is fully unlocked.
The other clear distinction is the lack of integrated graphics. Technically, the iGPU block is still there, baked into the IO die, but it’s disabled on this model—allowing AMD to use chiplets that would otherwise be discarded due to defects. As a result, the Ryzen 5 9500F is not a great fit for office or general-purpose PCs, since it requires a discrete graphics card. But for gaming-oriented rigs, where a dedicated GPU is always a given, this compromise may make perfect sense—and saves money.
The 5.0 GHz peak clock isn’t new, either—it is the same maximum clock as on the Ryzen 5 7500F, the very model the 9500F now replaces. But performance should still improve thanks to the improvements of the Zen 5 microarchitecture. According to AMD, the CPU can provide an average performance improvement of 9% in CPU-limited games, and up to 11% in certain eSports titles, when compared to the 7500F.

That said, such results naturally depend on the game selection. In GPU-bound titles, a faster CPU won’t make much of a difference. BenchLife, for instance, measured an average improvement of just 3.5% across the publication’s own gaming tests, since many titles simply didn’t scale with the faster chip. Official slides should be taken with a pinch of salt, nevertheless.

Global availability uncertain?
For now, it’s unclear if and when the Ryzen 5 9500F will appear outside of China. It is currently listed as a region-exclusive product at AMD’s global website, carrying the tray packaging code 100-000001406. In theory, AMD could later release a separate SKU with the same name but different code for international markets.
Regional exclusivity isn’t unusual—but sometimes it is only a temporary measure. The Ryzen 5 7500F was also thought to be China-only before it rolled out worldwide. What’s more, English-language slides from AMD have already leaked online, pointing to a launch date of September 16th, even as the chip is already on sale in China. Whether this translates into a separate global launch remains to be seen.
