Not only did AMD unveil the Radeon RX 9060 XT at Computex, the company also launched new processors for the so-called HEDT (high-end desktop) and workstation segments – the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series. These chips build upon the Threadripper 7000 platform but upgrade to the Zen 5 CPU architecture, which is especially important in this category as Zen 5 offers full 512-bit SIMD units, so AVX-512 code can deliver up to 2× the performance.
The Threadripper 9000 and Threadripper Pro 9000 (codenamed Shimada Peak) use the sTR5 socket like the previous 7000 generation and will be compatible as a “drop-in upgrade” with the same TRX50 and WRX90 platform motherboards, requiring only a firmware update. The processors are expected to retain the original 6nm IO chiplet, but now with new 4nm CPU chiplets.
Ryzen Threadripper 9000
Just like the previous generation, there will be a base version of the platform intended for TRX50 motherboards with four-channel memory, targeting the high-end desktop (HEDT) segment.

The price level is now significantly higher than during the era of the first Threadrippers or platforms like Intel’s X79 and X99, making such HEDT hardware more of a niche product. Currently even the HEDT part of the lineup leans toward professional use, workstations, and to some extent even servers. It helps that the base Threadrippers also support ECC registered memory.

There are three models in the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series for HEDT. The flagship is the Ryzen Threadripper 9980X with 64 Zen 5 cores and 128 threads. Its base clock is 3.2 GHz with a boost up to 5.4 GHz – meaning its single-threaded boost is only about 300 MHz behind the mainstream desktop (where the Ryzen 9 9950X reaches up to 5.7 GHz). The processor has a total of 256 MB of L3 cache (eight CPU chiplets with 32 MB each).
Then there are the Ryzen Threadripper 9970X with 32 cores / 64 threads at 4.0 GHz / 5.4 GHz, and the Ryzen Threadripper 9960X with 24 cores / 48 threads at 4.2 GHz / 5.4 GHz. These models have only four CPU chiplets and a total of 128 MB of L3 cache.

Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9000 (WX)
The more powerful Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9000WX series is targeted primarily at high-end workstations and includes more models. The top-tier Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX configuration provides 96 cores, 192 threads, and a total of 384 MB of L3 cache, with clock speeds of 2.5–5.4 GHz (the single-/light-threaded boost is equally high as in the non-Pro lineup, across all SKUs). This model is the only one featuring 12 CPU chiplets.

Other models mirror the specifications of the non-Pro versions, including identical clocks: Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9985WX has 64 cores, 128 threads, and 256 MB of L3 cache. Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9975WX has 32 cores, 64 threads, and 128 MB of L3 cache. Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9965WX has 24 cores, 48 threads, and 128 MB of L3 cache.
However, the Pro / WX line also includes two additional lower-core-count models, enabling workstation vendors to offer entry-level configurations on the same platform. The Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9955WX features only 16 cores, 32 threads, and 64 MB of L3 cache, likely based on two CPU chiplets. Its base and boost clocks are 4.5 GHz and 5.4 GHz, respectively. The Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9945WX is trimmed down to 12 cores, 24 threads, and still 64 MB of L3 cache. Its base clock speed is 4.7 GHz, with the same 5.4 GHz boost.

All processors uniformly feature a 350W TDP (though the very lowest models likely won’t fully utilize it), support eight-channel DDR5-6400 memory including ECC, and up to 128 lanes of PCI Express 5.0. Notably, both the Threadripper 9000 and Threadripper Pro 9000WX series are unlocked for overclocking.
Ryzen Threadripper 9000 CPUs can only be used in TRX50 platform motherboards with four-channel memory. The more expensive Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9000WX CPUs can be used in both WRX90 platform boards with eight-channel memory and the cheaper TRX50 boards as an upgrade option (useful if you want to install the 96-core model in them).
Launch in July
The Ryzen Threadripper 9000 processors will be available via standard retail channels starting sometime in July. An exact date and time have not yet been disclosed. AMD also has not revealed pricing, which will likely be announced around the same time. For reference, the suggested prices at launch for the previous 7000 generation were 4999 USD, 2499 USD, and 1499 USD.
Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9000WX models will be offered in workstations from major manufacturers – including models from HP, Supermicro, Dell, Lenovo, and smaller OEMs or system integrators. Availability of these prebuilt systems has not yet been specifically determined; AMD has only stated they will arrive “later this year.” However, the processors themselves will also be available separately through standard retail channels in July along with the non-Pro models, meaning DIY PC builders will have early access to them.
AMD currently leads Intel in x86 processor performance. As in the server market, this also appears to hold true for these “Workstation” CPUs. Apple, while excellent in single-threaded performance and energy efficiency, doesn’t offer processors with such high core counts. As a result, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9000WX series now appears to be the most powerful CPUs once available (with the possible exception of up to 192-core Epycs, which, however, offer lower single-threaded performance). Of course, this comes at a correspondingly high price.
AMD at Computex
We also visited AMD’s suite at Computex 2025, though that was yesterday, when both the Threadripper 9000 series (and Radeon RX 9060 XT) were still under an NDA. However, we can share the following showcase of AMD processors without their usual metal heat spreaders (IHS). Among the high-performance processors on display were server-grade Epyc 9004 and 9005 models, shown on the far right – 9004 is the Zen 4 generation, 9005 is based on Zen 5.

These processors, however, use a different package made for the SP5 socket with 12-channel memory, which also allows up to 16 CU chiplets with a total of 128 Zen 5 cores – this configuration is shown in the photo.

The Threadripper 9000 and Threadripper Pro 9000WX should share similar dimensions with the Epyc 8004 package for the SP6 socket, which isn’t pictured here. But Threadripper modifies it with higher core counts and different use of the socket. What they look like under the heat spreader is only known so far from visualizations provided directly by AMD, and you can see those in this article.
