Not only did AMD unveil the Radeon RX 9060 XT at Computex, the company also launched new processors for the so-called HEDT (high-end desktop) and workstation segments – the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series. These chips build upon the Threadripper 7000 platform but upgrade to the Zen 5 CPU architecture, which is especially important in this category as Zen 5 offers full 512-bit SIMD units, so AVX-512 code can deliver up to 2× the performance. AMD plans Threadrippers with 3D V-Cache, X3D APUs coming too
AMD has launched the Ryzen 7 9800X3D with second-generation 3D V-Cache technology with a large cache in an extra chipset, which makes it a good (currently the best) CPU for gaming. But this technology is now likely to be deployed more widely. It’s apparently coming to high-performance Threadripper processors for the first time, and could even appear in APUs, i.e. mobile processors for laptops, perhaps as Infinity Cache for their GPUs. AMD Pro 695 chipset: 2S Threadripper boards, or just a mistake?
A week ago, AMD unveiled its most powerful CPUs, the HEDT and workstation Threadripper and Threadripper Pro 7000. Two platforms with WRX90 and TRX50 chipsets were also released with them, but it looks like there could be a third type of boards for these CPUs, with a chipset labelled Pro 695. What it’s supposed to be, however, is very unclear. Or perhaps, on the contrary, seemingly clear but contradictory on closer inspection. Threadripper Pro 7995WX: 96 cores, 5.15 GHz, record performance
AMD’s Zen 4 processors achieved performance leadership in servers with the 96-core Epyc 9004 “Genoa” (and the 128-core cloud version “Bergamo”). Now this technology is branching into high-end desktop and workstations. The release of Ryzen Threadripper processors with Zen 4 architecture is probably closing in, as a production sample has leaked in the Geekbench benchmark – and it’s the highest SKU that will lead the whole line-up. Ryzen Threadripper with Zen 3 – release date? August, reportedly
Zen 3 has been out for quite some time, but AMD has not yet announced a new high-end Threadripper version. Fortunately, we don’t have to worry anymore: Threadripper with Zen 3 is said to be delayed, but is expected to be released in the summer in 4–5 months. In addition, we also have good news for those interested in Ryzen with integrated graphics. Unlike the 4000 series, desktop APUs with Zen 3 cores are supposed to be commercially available. There is no Mini-ITX for Threadripper, but there is MicroATX already
There is something appealing about the possibility of taking the fastest hardware that exists in the PC world and putting it in the smallest case possible rather than using conventional tower case. We have seen this with X299E-ITX/ac mini-ITX board for Skylake-X processors. We probably won’t witness a similar scenario for Ryzen Threadripper, because of the size of the socket, but there is a new MicroATX model at least.
