At first glance, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming OC doesn’t impress with a flashy design or a vibrant light show. It’s not among the cheapest models, but it’s far from the most expensive. In a standard position, the lighting is rather subtle, the backlit fans stand out more in a vertical setup. The real advantage, though, is the oversized cooler and well-tuned fan control, allowing this card to surpass even more expensive competitors in terms of operating characteristics.
The price of the Gigabyte RTX 5080 Gaming OC in our neck of the woods is around 1520 EUR. Compared to the 1199 EUR MSRP for base models, this is quite a markup. But it’s not realistic to expect to find an RTX 5080 at 1199 EUR, especially given the extreme demand and current very poor availability. If you’re looking for something cheaper, Gigabyte also offers Windforce models with smaller coolers.
I could complain about how the performance increase over the RTX 4080 Super doesn’t justify the price increase. How, in fact, it’s an unattractive new product and the progress is hardly worth mentioning.
It’s hard to feel joy about current prices, but you also won’t get the older RTX 4080 Super at a reasonable price anymore, so if you want an RTX 5080, you basically have two options: pre-order cards at market prices with a surcharge and wait, or wait until the situation stabilizes a bit and prices drop.
But given the abnormal situation in the market, I don’t think it’s worth discussing prices and price/performance ratios in depth right now. In a few months, the situation will be different, and you can adjust according to how prices evolve. What will always hold true, however, are the card’s features. At least with the current revision. Those really impressed me, especially considering it’s a model falling somewhere in the middle of the lineup. Temperatures are still good, the fan control in Quiet mode is optimal, and in this regard, I can’t complain, Gigabyte definitely deserves praise.
In the default performance BIOS, the fan control of the GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming OC is a sort of compromise. Even so, it will be one of the quieter models and offer better operating characteristics than the compact Founders Edition. With more intense cooling and lower temperatures, it might even last a few more months. However, this won’t be ideal for enthusiasts who prefer silent PCs straight from the store.
With the quiet BIOS, it will likely outperform most cards on the market in terms of noise. But it’s almost certain that if you want the absolute quietest card, you would probably choose differently. This might cost you a couple of hundreds more, though. It is nice to see the quieter power supply coils. While they are not absolutely silent, they are quieter than the RTX 5080s I have tested so far. This is generally the case with Gigabyte cards. I can’t rule out that the manufacturer might be sending better-performing samples for testing, but in the case of Gigabyte, I’ve had similar experiences with actual units from stores.
A small rarity is the option to increase the power limit to 450 W, which, combined with the cooler that has enormous reserves in both the fans and the heatsink’s cooling capacity, gives you a huge amount of space for further tuning.
The only downside is the significant price premium compared to the cheapest models. Even the basic RTX 5080 isn’t exactly cheap, and you can’t expect the price of the RTX 5080 Gaming OC to drop by a hundred EUR within a few weeks. A larger cooler simply costs you a bit more. But again, there are even more expensive models above this one, which don’t offer much more added value but will be considerably pricier.
In this regard, it’s a golden middle way—you won’t pay extreme amounts like with the top-tier RTX 5080 models, yet you get equipment and operating characteristics that are close to those of the most expensive models. In fact, some of those premium cards, which push clock speeds and power limits to the extreme, are even surpassed by this card’s operating characteristics in their default settings.
Therefore, the Gigabyte RTX 5080 Gaming OC should definitely be among the models you consider in your narrower selection when buying an RTX 5080.
Pros and cons
+ Excellent operating characteristics
+ Quieter in quiet mode than most mainstream cards and available RTX 5080s
+ The cooler has plenty of headroom
+ Power limit can be increased up to 450W
+ Plenty of room for further experimentation with clock speeds
+ Coils quieter than in most RTX 5080s
+ Dual BIOS
+ Included kit for mounting the card in the back as well
– With a length of over 34 cm, it will interfere with the front fans in some smaller cases
– Significant premium over base models and worse price/performance ratio
– Significantly noisier in Performance mode with an imperceptible difference in performance
– The cooler shroud of a large and heavy card could be more robust
– Thermal gel instead of pads makes it difficult to disassemble the card
