How we measured computer PSUs. The electrical part

The time has come to introduce the testing methodology for computer PSUs. We will divide this into two articles, where the first will cover procedures for obtaining key electrical quantities (i.e. surrounding efficiency, voltage regulation, voltage ripple, etc.). A separate sequel will then focus on the analysis of acoustic profiles. But now on to the purpose for which we travelled to the external testlab. Read more “How we measured computer PSUs. Netac’s new CF2000 CFexpress cards offer up to 1750 MB/s speeds

Today, you can have a small NVMe SSD even inside your camera, as memory cards have adopted this technology, evolving CompactFlash cards into a new CFexpress standard. Memory cards of this type has now been released by Netac, which offers not only memory cards but also standard SSDs which positions the company well to combine the two technologies into a memory card for demanding professional photography or video capture. BeQuiet! Pure Wings 3 (BL108): Efficient and “cheap” in 140 mm

The long break is over, back to fans. BeQuiet! recently updated its entry-level line – Pure Wings – and at least the slower 140-millimeter models have to be on your radar. The Pure Wings 3 fans in the BL108 variant represent an extremely efficient low-cost option for some situations, while not suffering from the common shortcomings of their price class. What’s quiet here is not only the aerodynamic component, but also the motor one. Read more “BeQuiet! Pure Wings 3 (BL108): Efficient and “cheap” in 140 mm” »

Why ATX 3.0? Features and advantages of the new PSU standard

We are currently working on a series of power supply tests, from which you already saw a preview with thermal imagery and temperature measurements of the 12pin (a.k.a. 12+4pin) 12VHPWR cables. In this article we will look at what the PSUs produced using this standard have to offer. Even older good quality PSUs can last a long time in several generations of your PC, so what in the ATX 3.0 specification makes it worth switching over? Read more “Why ATX 3.0? Features and advantages of the new PSU standard” »

DeepCool CH560 WH: Fresh (case) cooling-wise and visually

You’ve already seen the new “CH” case model as part of a build where we played around a bit with cooling optimizations and keeping things as quiet as possible. Now here is the standard review with a more detailed analysis. Compared to the CH510 Digital series, the CH560 (WH) is a bit more expensive, but comes with more features. And significantly so. Its biggest selling point is its four efficient ARGB fans. Read more “DeepCool CH560 WH: Fresh (case) cooling-wise and visually” »

Fractal Design Flex 2 for free. First to write wins

Since we have no use for the Flex 2 holders from our recent review and also, FD doesn’t want them back, we’re giving them away. To readers who can take advantage of vertical mounting of the graphics card. There are only two available (black and white), so speed is of the essence. The first person to respond to this challenge gets to pick the colour, the second person will be sent the one left if they wish, and the third person in row is already writing late. Amazon unveils 96-core ARM Graviton4 CPU and Trainium2 AI chip

Last month, Microsoft unveiled their first custom processors being developed for datacenter and Azure services. Also Amazon, which was the first of these US hyperscalers to go the custom hardware route, is now launching new CPUs for its servers. And with it Trainium2, already the second generation of an in-house developed AI accelerator. Amazon also revealed that it has already produced over two million of its CPUs. 12VHPWR cable thermal imaging: Different PSU, different temps

Something for warm-up. We’ll start our ATX 3.0 PSU tests with perhaps the most talked about topic surrounding them, the temperatures of the new cables with 16-pin PCIe connectors. The overview of the PSUs of twelve brands answers well the question of how the manufacturers handled which models. With high current loads, the temperature differences can be quite significant, both on the connector housings and on the wire insulation. Retrotest: 8× PC case. From small to “large”

In the archives we found some remarkable tests that have never been published in English. Although they are heavily out of date ( cases included have not been sold for a long time), it illustrates well the possible impact of cooling across a wide variety of designs. And by those we also mean completely passive solutions that use their own shell to dissipate heat, as well as rather larger midi-towers and also something in between. Ryzen 8000G parameters leaked. Ryzen 5000GT for AM4 is coming

It looks like AMD could launch quite a few new desktop processors after the turn of the year. Last week, alleged specifications of Ryzen 8000Gs were leaked, which will be a desktop version of the 4nm Phoenix SoC with Zen 4 architecture. At the same time, reports appeared telling of new upcoming releases for the old AM4 platform, which is supposedly getting new models again, perhaps also some APUs with integrated graphics. Last delay of Noctua 140 mm LCP fans?

This news won’t please anyone who was eyeing the new generation of 140mm Noctua fans in early 2024. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for that one, although the planned release delay is quite small, but don’t count on a January date. But it looks like the period in which these fans will be coming out will be a very fruitful one. In fact, the successor to the NH-D15 cooler is also said to come out in the same quarter. Scythe Fuma 3 bonus tests: Third fan and same rotation

What impact does adjusting the fan configuration have on the efficiency and acoustic pfrofile of the Scythe Fuma 3 cooler? We report on the possible changes in the additional tests, where in one of the modes, the heatsink is supplemented with a third fan and in the other we replaced the low-profile fan with a thicker model, but at the same time we deprived the cooler of one of the advertised advantages – the counter-rotating fans. Zen 6 document leak: More cores, PCIe 6.0 and 2.5D packaging

Some time ago, youtuber Moore’s Law Is Dead leaked the first information with AMD’s Zen 6 architecture coming after the yet-to-be-released Zen 5. Now he has another juicy rumor regarding these CPUs, which could come to market in 2026 (late 2025 at best), as he has received documents showing a server and embedded version of them. These designs may however reveal quite a bit about desktop Ryzens with this architecture as well. Read more “Zen 6 document leak: More cores, PCIe 6.0 and 2.5D packaging” »

Graphics card vertically. We tried the Fractal Design Flex 2

You might have thought about vertical mounting of your graphics card, which many modern cases allow. You can’t do it without the right adapter, though. This usually has to be purchased as an optional accessory. We tested one such PCI Express ×16 adapter with three differently performing graphics cards. Does it or does it not affect their performance? The bottom line with the insertion of such intermediate adapters is always that “it” works at all. Read more “Graphics card vertically. We tried the Fractal Design Flex 2” »

Not lucky last time? We still have the Cooler Master GX III Gold 850

One PSU contest is over, another one is starting. Cooler Master has donated its 850-watt GX III Gold model to our HWCooling contest. With a little luck, you can win one. It won’t be completely “free”, but you won’t break much of a sweat either. All you need to do is show a basic understanding of the Cooler Master power supply stuff. This will be especially easy for fans of the brand, but anyone can do it. Read more “Not lucky last time? We still have the Cooler Master GX III Gold 850” »
