Multi-frame generation coming to Radeon GPUs, drivers show

Last year, Nvidia introduced multi-frame generation that inserts 2, 3, or even 5 AI-interpolated “fake” frames between real frames (though only for GeForce RTX 5000-series cards—with users of older GPUs out of luck). Since then, Intel has also introduced multi-frame generation, but it has never been available on Radeon graphics cards. That now appears to be changing, as AMD seems to be preparing the feature for an upcoming driver release.

There has been speculation for some time that AMD was planning the feature too, or at least testing it internally. From an implementation standpoint, the main challenge is building the mechanism that interpolates frames between the game’s real frames using motion vectors and image data itself. Once that is in place, generating one interpolated frame or several consecutive ones is a relatively minor change. The greater challenge is most likely ensuring proper display timing so that the final output remains smooth—a problem shared with standard frame generation, but likely more complex in the case of multi-frame generation.

Now it appears that AMD is getting ready to release the feature. Evidence that it is in development has surfaced in Radeon graphics drivers. It was discovered by the developer of RadeonTuner, an application that allows users to modify various Radeon GPU settings without opening AMD Software’s standard control panel. RadeonTuner can also expose settings that are not visible in the official application.

According to the RadeonTuner developers, AMD’s drivers now already include a setting options for selecting the number of generated frames (the feature is labeled “FSR Multi Frame Generation”), which RadeonTuner makes accessible. It should be emphasized, however, that this option currently appears to do nothing. The author of RadeonTuner explains that the infrastructure for configuring new features typically appears in public drivers before the underlying functionality itself is enabled. It is likely that AMD is preparing the codebase for the planned release of multi-frame generation, while the actual implementation currently exists only in drivers being tested internally by the company.

2× to 8× modes

RadeonTuner (after enabling the option to modify experimental settings) allows the number of “fake” frames to be set anywhere from 1 to 7. This means the game’s native frame rate could be multiplied by 2×, 3×, 4×, 5×, 6×, 7×, or 8×. This does not necessarily mean that all of these modes will be officially available in Radeon drivers. It is possible that only some of them will ultimately be enabled, or that only some modes will be unlocked at first with additional being introduced later.

Incidentally, the option is available only on Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards (based on the RDNA 4 architecture). This is most likely because multi-frame generation is built on the AI-based frame generation technology introduced with FSR 4 in the Redstone update. AMD has since released a modified version of FSR 4 (more precisely FSR 4.1) for Radeon RX 7000-series graphics cards (and eventually RX 6000-series as well), but that applies only to AI upscaling, not AI frame generation. Older graphics cards, where FSR 3.1’s non-AI frame generation will continue to be used, could be stuck with only standard single-frame generation.

It is still unknown how long it will take before fully functional support for the feature reaches public drivers. According to the RadeonTuner developer, the timeframe is likely a matter of months, so we may see it arrive sometime this fall, or perhaps in January during CES 2027. That is, if you actually care about frame generation. If AI-interpolated frames are not something you’re interested in, then both the wait and the restriction to the RX 9000 generation will probably make no difference to you.
