We have a colleague attending Taiwan’s Computex trade show, one of the highlights of the PC and hardware calendar, where manufacturers showcase their biggest innovations. We visited Asus, and we picked out a some interesting highlights the company is presenting. Asus, too, showcased motherboards with hidden connectors, along with one improvement that addresses the issue of GPU power cables. There was also a hub for wireless fan control. At Computex 2025, we visited Gigabyte – one of the top manufacturers of graphics cards, motherboards, and other gear, including laptops. This year, the company focused strongly on laptops, but it also showcased other highlights, like a PC that is the closest thing to a fully Nvidia-powered computer today, with the GB10 processor. Nvidia kept the launch of the GeForce RTX 5060 – successor to the popular GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 4060 series – for Computex. It wasn’t exactly quiet, but the launch was unusual – drivers enabling reviews weren’t released until Monday evening, after sales began. Likely due to backlash over the RTX 5060 still offering only 8GB of memory, four years after the 12GB RTX 3060. As a result, it’s faced a fairly cold reception. We are at the Computex trade fair taking place in Taiwan. Here we visited the MSI booth, where we checked out concept PCs assembled from the company’s components, cases, a display (though of a somewhat different kind than you might expect), and graphics cards. You may have already heard that MSI is planning a new generation of the iconic Twin FROZR coolers, but another classic cooler design from even earlier times also makes a return. We’ve already covered some of Nvidia’s announcements coming out of Computex 2025 this week, which is always the biggest computer industry event of the year along with CES. Thanks to the lower power consumption of the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti and the use of more compact printed circuit boards in the new GeForce RTX 50 series, Gigabyte offers cards with a unique design in the WindForce 2X and Eagle model lines. Their PCB extends only halfway along the PCIe slot. This allows the use of a compact dual-fan cooler with an unobstructed heatsink behind the rear fan, which delivers excellent cooling performance for its size. Two weeks ago, we published an article about issues with PCIe 5.0 slot speeds on newer graphics cards in certain motherboards. After powering on the PC, the slot often failed to initialize correctly, causing graphics cards to start with fewer active lanes than expected. With the new GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, the card was booting in PCIe 5.0 x1 or x2 mode nearly every other time. Gigabyte investigated the issue and addressed it with the F5a BIOS update. The Prime series is one of Asus’s newer product lines, aimed at budget-minded customers. By combining lower prices with solid features, it delivers an attractive price-to-performance ratio—and that goes for graphics cards, too. The Prime GeForce RTX 5070 12GB OC Edition is one of the most affordable options currently available. The 8GB model of GeForce RTX 5060 Ti has faced heavy criticism. Nvidia reportedly even tried to prevent reviews. Tests eventually confirmed that while 8GB is still sufficient for many tasks, an increasing number of games and scenarios now demand more, limiting the GPU’s usability. That’s when reports surfaced that AMD might have reconsidered its plans and possibly cancelled the upcoming Radeon RX 9060 XT model with 8GB memory. GeForce RTX 5070 Gaming OC 12G represents a mid-range model from Gigabyte’s RTX 5070 lineup. Thanks to its large, efficient cooler and dual BIOS with a silent mode, fan speeds hover around 1500 RPM under load, keeping the cooler quieter than most current cards. Reports of the Radeon RX 9070 GRE delay have turned out to be untrue, as this graphics card does appear to be launching now as the third model of the RDNA 4 generation. And it’s official: AMD has posted the specifications on their website, and listings have appeared for pre-order in initial retail outlets. However, for the time being, the launch is limited to China making the card a region-exclusive product, at least temporarily. The top model of the RTX 5060 Ti currently available from Asus is the TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB OC Edition. Although its power consumption isn’t particularly high, it comes with a large triple-slot cooler (30 cm) that easily manages the 180W load, keeping GPU and memory temperatures at 70 °C with fans running at just 1000 RPM and staying whisper-quiet. Not much has been happening in the realm of the cheapest graphics cards. The last newcomer was the GeForce RTX 3050 6GB, which did represent a significant step back in performance compared to the original version, but it was also a 70W card not requiring auxiliary power. Something similar might now be emerging from AMD, although it’s still unclear whether this new basic low-power card will be widely available in stores. While testing the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, I encountered a recurring issue with active PCIe lanes. On PCIe 5.0 motherboards, the card often fails to run in x8 mode even in a x16 slot, starting instead in slower x1, x2, or x4 modes. The same behavior occurred across three RTX 5060 Ti models from MSI, Gainward, and Asus.
