Alder Lake may have a higher power draw. PSU recommendations

Intel will release new Alder Lake desktop processors in three months—with a powerful new architecture and hybrid big.LITTLE approach for the first time. These CPUs, finally manufactured on 7nm process (originally 10nm Enhanced SuperFin), should have significantly better energy efficiency. But it looks thir power needs will go up despite this. Intel is increasing the currents required from PSUs, which could mean higher power draws. Read more “Alder Lake may have a higher power draw. PSU recommendations” »

Review of AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor. Zen 2 still rocks

Even after the release of the Ryzen 7 5700G, the Ryzen 7 3700X is currently the cheapest octa-core processor. It still doesn’t have a proper successor. The Ryzen 5 5800X is significantly pricier, but it is fully stocked in stores. This last-gen model could thus be considered up-to-date and should not be omitted in comparisons with other processors. It also beats the Rocket Lake Core i7 not only in efficiency but also occasionally in performance. Read more “Review of AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor. Zen 2 still rocks” »

Intel AVX-512 tested in x265: how to enable it and does it help?

The 11th generation Intel Core processors (Rocket Lake) are the first mainstream desktop parts supporting AVX-512 instruction set, previously only available in Xeons or the X299 platform. One area where AVX-512 promises better performance is multimedia. We looked at one use: encoding HEVC video via x265. It’s little known, but x265 does not actually use AVX-512 by default. We’ll show you how to turn it on and what are the effects. Read more “Intel AVX-512 tested in x265: how to enable it and does it help?” »

Intel Core i7-11700KF: A hair slower, but better value than Core i9

8 cores, 16 threads. From this point of view, it is the same configuration as the Core i9-11900K(F). However, the Core i9 is a significantly more expensive processor and, especially in games, it has a much higher power consumption. At the same time, the difference in performance is minimal. It follows that with higher efficiency, the Core i7-11700K(F) has a more attractive price-performance ratio. Read more “Intel Core i7-11700KF: A hair slower, but better value than Core i9” »

MS Flight Simulator July update test: More than twice the FPS

The announced update to increase performance in MFS is out, and we have a “before” and “after” comparison for you. Developers has worked to ensure that the processor does not significantly bottleneck the GPU. So far, the performance of the graphics card did not matter much, because only a fraction of its potential was used. But newly, you will achieve better performance on low-end hardware than you did before on a top-end rig. Read more “MS Flight Simulator July update test: More than twice the FPS” »

The new (11400F) vs. older (10400F) Intel Core i5 processor

Intel has practically no direct competition in the segment of cheaper processors. The lowest Core i5 CPUs are significantly cheaper than the Ryzen 5 5600X, which is AMD’s entry level in this class. Therefore, this brotherly duel of the new (11400F) with the older (10400F) Core i5 is more attractive than comparing the processors between the two companies. That was also a wish of one of our readers, and now it is finally coming true. Read more “The new (11400F) vs. older (10400F) Intel Core i5 processor” »

Test of AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processor: 32 threads on AM4

The Ryzen 9 5950X is the highest performance processor designed for the “small” AMD AM4 socket. At the same time, it is a rarity that has essentially no competition (Intel has nothing against it) and is roughly halfway to high-end Threadrippers. Compared to those, however, it has a higher gaming performance and a cheap motherboard will also suffice. This processor is even sometimes more power-efficient than the slower 5900X. Single-thread boost analysis of Vermeer, Rocket and Comet Lake

In a recent test of processors, we focused on everything, even single-threaded boost. We will now take a closer look at it, because its behavior is remarkable. Modern processors also use two cores in turns for single-threaded tasks. This creates a short pause for the unloaded core to cool down. We captured how it works in bar graphs with waveforms, and you will also find out whether the specifications are closer met by AMD or Intel. Intel Core i9-11900K vs. AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Who’s the winner?

Have you already created a perfect picture of the current generation of desktop processors or are you still willing to reconsider some things? For the start of HWC processor tests, we’ve picked the hottest hardware from Intel’s mainstream offer – the Core i9-11900K, which is going to compete against the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X in 40 chapters full of information. The older Core i9-10900K has also successfully been re-tested by the new methodology. Read more “Intel Core i9-11900K vs. AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Who’s the winner?” »

Ryzen 5000 XT sample leak: stepping B2 to bring 5 GHz clock

Refresh of Ryzen 5000 desktop processors with Zen 3 architecture seems to be approaching. Vermeer chips, on which the current Ryzen 5000X models are based, have now appeared with a brand new B2 stepping. AMD might use refreshed CPU models as a response to Intel releasing the Rocket Lake 11th generation Core desktop processors. Chips with the B2 stepping seem to achieve higher clock speed, so they could finally reach 5 GHz officially. Read more “Ryzen 5000 XT sample leak: stepping B2 to bring 5 GHz clock” »

AMD Strix Point: 3nm Ryzen 8000 with Zen 5 cores to be big.LITTLE

We’ve known for a long time that Intel’s next processors will be hybrid in both laptops and even desktops, combining little and big cores in the manner of big.LITTLE ARM processors in mobile phones. Some doubt remains about the viability of this approach with Windows platform or PC in general. But now there are reports that it’s not going to be just Intel. AMD could also go for similar hybrid architecture. Read more “AMD Strix Point: 3nm Ryzen 8000 with Zen 5 cores to be big.LITTLE” »

Intel Rocket Lake processor models, specs and prices revealed

The wait for Intel desktop processors with the new architecture is almost over. The 11th generation Core for desktop was officially released last week and it’s just days to sales and reviews. Intel has now officially announced the complete specifications and especially the prices of all models. The most powerful Core i9-11900K will go for $ 539 or almost € 550, but a 6-core for cheap gaming PCs will go for mere € 160/$ 157. Release dates of Intel Rocket Lake and 10nm Alder Lake leaked

Intel has kept offering desktop processors with Skylake architecture for five and a half years. Ironically it looks like now, two new architectures will follow each other in just nine months, both with a 20% increase in IPC: according to current information, the Rocket Lake processors (11th gen Core) will be released in March 30, but 12th generation Alder Lake and the new LGA 1700 platform are set to go on sale in December. Recycling in China: laptop CPUs turned into LGA 1151 upgrades

There’s an interesting industry built on reusing old hardware in China. For example Xeon E5 CPUs and newly-produced gaming motherboards for them, but recently they started converting mobile Intel BGA processors into socketed CPUs for desktop. Not so old Comet Lake chips with six and eight cores are now being offered this way and you can even use them to upgrade B150/Z170/Z270 series boards, which officially only support quad-cores. Cheaper Zen 3 in early 2021: AMD to launch Ryzen 5 5600 at $220

The Ryzen 5000 processors announced last week give AMD a shot at becoming the performance king fully overtaking Intel this generation, however they brought unwelcome news, too. Particularly the price: the cheapest Zen 3 based Ryzen 5 5600X with just six cores will cost $299, a long stretch from Zen 2 based Ryzen 5 3600. But it seems this might improve soonish as AMD is reportedly readying cheaper hexa-core Ryzen 5 5600. Read more “Cheaper Zen 3 in early 2021: AMD to launch Ryzen 5 5600 at $220” »
